We statistically studied several problems related to critical flicker fusion frequency (CFF), which was used to design the interlaced scanning method of television systems. Since CFF values closely depend on the physical and mental state of the observer, statistical treatment of data is essential. We studied the difference between up and down discrimination threshold series and the coincidence between CFF values for equal energy colors, mainly by adapting a variance method analysis.

Fuel efficient flight is demanded due to air traffic increase, environmental concerns and skyrocketing fuel prices. To achieve an effective futuristic air traffic management system, realization of TBO (Trajectory Based Operations) optimized from departure to arrival is aimed in CARATS (Collaborative Actions for Renovation of Air Traffic Systems). In this paper, 4-D trajectory of passenger aircraft is optimized for fuel minimization on the assumption that aircraft is not bounded by any air traffic control constraints. BADA (Base of Aircraft Data) model is adopted for aircraft performance model, and dynamic programming is used to calculate the optimal trajectory. The optimal trajectory is compared with airliner’s flight trajectory by evaluating fuel consumption, flight time and flight range. Examples show that considerable amounts of reduction in fuel consumption could be achieved by trajectory optimization compared to the estimated values of actual flights.

To develop ecotoxicity test methods for the ecological impact assessment of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) in aquatic environments, we summarized the methods and results of ecotoxicity tests used in published articles. We also discussed the points to be considered while conducting ecotoxicity tests for CNFs using aquatic organisms based on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) guidance document No. 317 for ecotoxicity testing of nanomaterials. In some published articles, no ecological effects of CNFs on aquatic organisms were observed, even when they were exposed to high concentrations of CNFs. In these studies, test organisms may not have been exposed to nominal concentrations of CNFs because of CNF agglomeration and settling caused due to the low dispersion stability of CNFs resulting from the water quality of the test medium. According to the OECD guidance document, attention must be paid toward dispersibility and dispersion stability, effects of feeding, and factors related to adverse effects, analysis, and measurement of CNFs. No literature was found that reported on all these aspects of testing. Future examination of ecological effects of CNFs needs to consider measuring actual exposure concentrations by evaluating dispersibility and dispersion stability of CNFs.

哲学者J.マッキーは、①「神は全能である」、②「神は全善である」、③「悪は存在する」という三つの命題の間には論理的な意味での矛盾があり、これら三つを同時に整合的に固執することができないと見て、「善なる全能者と悪のパラドクス」および「全能と自由意志のパラドクス」を指摘する。そして、これらのパラドクスが、有神論者を自己矛盾に陥らせていると批判する。この批判に、分析哲学に精通したアングロ・アメリカ系の神学者、A.プランティンガとR.スウィンバーンが以下のように応戦する。「全能なる神でさえ、丸い四角形を作るような論理的矛盾を犯すことはできない」、また、「神は全能ではあるけれども、自分が気に入った可能世界のどれをも現実化できたわけでもなければ、道徳上の善をふくむが道徳上の悪をふくまない世界を創造することができたわけでもない。」こうした哲学と神学の攻防が、学問の進歩を誘導することになる事態を、本稿はクローズアップする。
