In order to realize the cultivation of Asiasarum sieboldii from the seed, the growth condition of the embryos and germination conditions of the seeds were studied. Although the embryos of the seeds soon after harvest were immature and undifferentiated, they grew to differentiate into cotyledons and radicles during storage in wet sand at room temperature, and germinated with rooting 120 days after harvest. The optimum temperatures for growth of the embryos and the germination of the seeds were shown to be 15-20℃, whereas more than 90% success rate was obtained in about 60 days on the germination test in petri dishes. On the other hand, the optimum temperature for seedling emergence is thought to be 8-10℃, since the germinated seeds planted in a sowing bed sprouted in the early spring after lower temperature in winter.

Five new compounds, kalopanaxsaponin G (2) and kalopanaxins A (6), B (8), C (11) and D (13), were isolated from the bark of Kalopanax pictus together with nine known compounds, kalopanaxsaponins A (1) and B (5), pericarpsaponin PJ3 (3), hederasaponin B (4), syringin (7), protocatechuic acid (9), coniferin (10), liriodendrin (=dl-syringaresinol di-O-glucopyranoside) (12), glucosyringic acid (14) and chlorogenic acid (15). The structures of the new compounds were characterized as hederagenin 28-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1→4)-β-glucopyranosyl(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), ferulyldehyde (=coniferylaldehyde) 4-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (6), coniferin 6'-O-(4-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl)-syringate (8), 2-methoxyhydroquinone 4-O-[6-O-(4-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl)-syringyl]-β-D-glucopyranoside (11) and coniferyl alcohol 4-O-β-D-apiofuranosyl(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranoside (=coniferin 2'-O-β-D-apiofuranoside) (13).

Carbohydrates on cell surfaces play important roles in various cell adhesion processes such as bacterial and viral infection, neurtrophile recruitment, cell differentiation and so on by binding proteins like lectins, antibodies, and glycoenzymes (glycosidases and glycosyltransferases). Carbohydrate analogues which inhibit the interaction between carbohydrates and proteins are promising molecules to clarify and control biological functions of oligosaccharides, and some of the analoges were prepared by using aldolase catalyzed reactions without any tedious procedures. For example, a mimetic of sialyl Lewis X which is an ligand of E-selectin was synthesized by using L-threonine aldolase catalyzed reaction as a key step. In addition, synthetic approach to KDO and 4-azaiduronic acid by using kynureninase and the L-threonine aldolase, respectively, is almost achieved.This review article shows solid phase synthesis and combinatorial synthesis of carbohydrates and treats the details about the utility of aldolases on making carbohydrate mimetics as one of the chemical approaches of glycotechnology.

We found that an impurity was formed in the 1% dibucaine injection solution following ordinal treatment using the high-pressure steam method. The impurity was isolated and characterized to be 2-hydroxy-N-[2-(diethylamino) ethy1-4-quinolinecarboxamine (debutyl-dibucaine)], which was caused from the thermal degradation of dibucaine brought about by the sterilization process. The degradation of dibucaine with dealkylation was found to be affected under the thermal treatment, time and temperature conditions. In addition, suitable sterilization conditions were established to maintain the purity of the 1% dibucaine injection solution at more than 99.5%.

水腫, 脚気, 解毒の改善に用いられるアズキ (生薬名: 赤小豆, セキショウズ) 煮汁の成分を明らかにする目的でアズキ熱水抽出物の成分研究を行った。その結果, フラボノイドならびにその配糖体13種を単離し, 構造を明らかにした。次いでアズキ熱水抽出物およびこれから得られたフラボノイド誘導体についてDPPH法によるラジカル消去活性を測定した。その結果, いずれも代表的な抗酸化物質であるBHAに匹敵する強い抗酸化作用を示した。
