Psychological reality of a “central tone” in the highly “tonal” melody was investigated by using the method of “final tone extrapolation”. Five kinds of stimulus tone sequence were made from each of the 35 six-tone melodic sequences (original sequences), for which rating scores of “tonality feeling” had been obtained; i.e., a two-tone sequence using the first two tones, a three-tone sequence using the first three tones, and so on up to a six-tone sequence using all of six tones, of each of the original sequences. Twenty-four subjects were asked to add an appropriate “final tone” to each of the stimulus tone sequences by using a keyboard of an instrument. For each of the sequences made from the “tonal” original melodic sequences, the final tone chosen tended to be restricted to a few specific tones in all five types of the tone sequences, while for the “atonal” original melodic sequences, the final tone chosen was diversely different. The results were discussed in relation to the “coherency” of a melody and other processing characteristics of human melody cognition.

音楽と言語は人間のもつユニークな特性であり,多くの哲学者,思想家,生物学者,心理学者や他の科学者たちが,両者の比較および関係について考察してきた。興味深いことに,さまざまな研究技法の発達に伴い,ここ 20 年ほどの間に音楽と言語の比較研究への関心が復活した。本稿では,まず音楽と言語に焦点を当てた最近の心理学的および進化や発達の研究知見について述べ,次に音楽と言語に関する認知処理モデルとその着想源となった神経科学的知見にも触れる。おわりに今後の展望について考察する。

刺激として聴取される歌は複数の属性を持っているが、その主たるものは言葉(歌詞)と音楽(メロディ)である。この双方から歌の聴取における全体的印象が形成されるが、両者の関係はどのようなものであろうか。明・暗の印象がはっきりした詞とメロディをもとに、詞だけの朗読、メロディだけの歌唱(スキャット)、そして歌としてそれらを相互に様々に組み合わせたものの歌唱をそれぞれ提示して、29名の被験者に形容詞尺度による印象評定を求めそれらを比較した。その結果から、歌の印象にはメロディの効果が詞の効果よりも強く現れることが示された。また、印象評定後におこなった再認記憶実験から、詞とメロディの印象に食違いのある歌はより記憶されやすく、好みの程度が低い刺激ほど再認成績の高いことが示された。The effects of lyrics and those of melody (musical mode) in a song on the impressions were examined by using an impression rating method of seven adjective bipolar scales. Song lyrics spoken, song melody sung using the syllable la, and a complete song were prepared as auditory stimuli. Twenty-nine college students who participated in the rating phase were then required to recognize each of the stimuli presented in the rating phase to examine the relation between impression and memory. The results suggested that the effects of melody on the impression of the songs were stronger than the effects of lyrics, and influenced more the song's feeling. It was shown that in the recognition phase, participants performed better in the songs which had discrepancies between the impressions of their lyrics and melody. There was a clear negative correlation between recognition and "liking" scale.

Regardless of the time and location, people listen to music. One may ask why people listen to music and what function it serves. This study clarifies the psychological functions of listening to music and the attributes associated with the individual differences found in these functions. A total of 916 participants between the ages of 15 and 88 were asked to rate various psychological functions of music listening and Big Five traits. A factor analysis identified the seven factors of psychological functions of music listening: “self-awareness”, “emotion regulation”, “communication”, “tool”, “embodiment”, “social distance regulation”, and “solace”. The results revealed that the individual differences in the functions were the result of gender, age, and personality traits. The nature of these seven functions and future directions are discussed.
