This study clarified some psychological mechanisms related to uncooperative decisions by considering the trends of regional differences in emotions related to reconstruction activities. We administered an internet-based questionnaire survey of 779 Japanese people from eight regions reflecting various geographical distances and levels of damage from the disaster in 2011 or previous disasters. Exploratory factor analysis results showed that eight emotional evaluations for supporters and dissenters of reconstruction activities were grouped into two common structures: positive and negative. Analysis of variance results showed that among supporters, there were no regional differences for high positive emotions or low negative emotions. For dissenters, current damage and historical damage were significantly associated with negative emotions and suppressed positive emotions. These results indicate that empathy resources such as damage from a past disaster are associated with people's emotional state or attitudes related to reconstruction activities.

Lau and Cheng (2011, 2013) reported that a gratitude induction procedure reduced death anxiety but that it did not promote emotional well-being. The present study was aimed at replication of their reported findings. Experiment 1 assessed single gratitude intervention effects on death anxiety, feeling, and mental health among college students. Results showed death anxiety was not reduced by the intervention but positive feeling and mental health were improved. Experiment 2 examined effects of one-month gratitude intervention on death-related anxiety, feeling, and mental health. We also examined effects of trait gratitude. Results showed no significant effect of gratitude intervention on death anxiety reduction, but participants with higher gratitude traits exhibited better mental health. These results suggest that trait gratitude is associated with mental health, although the results did not confirm a death anxiety reduction effect of gratitude intervention, as reported by Lau and Cheng (2011, 2013).

Several studies have examined the transfer effects of playing action video games. Recently, some researchers have proposed auditory virtual reality games with three-dimensional virtual auditory display. These studies were intended to apply auditory virtual reality games to the auditory education of visually impaired people. However, few studies have investigated the transfer effects of playing auditory games. In this paper, we introduce previous studies that investigated transfer effects of playing virtual three-dimensional auditory games. Moreover, we proposed new perspectives and future assignments of auditory virtual reality games.

Senses of presence and verisimilitude are affected differently by temporal asynchrony between audio-visual components of audio-visual content. To investigate whether this result is valid more generally, we conducted an experiment using a clip of western orchestral music. Results revealed that the sense of verisimilitude is more sensitive to audiovisual synchronicity than to the display size, whereas the sense of presence is more sensitive to the spatial size than the temporal property. These findings corresponded well with those of the previous study, which indicated that the sense of verisimilitude is distinguishable from the sense of presence. Furthermore, we discussed important considerations related to measurement for Kansei information such as the sense of presence and verisimilitude.
