The molecular recognition of DNA by small molecules including bisintercalators has been described. Site-specific chemical reactions of DNA are next reviewed. These include i) reactions of DNA with oxygen-dependent antibiotics such as bleomycin, neocarzinostatin and camptothecin, and ii) single strand cleavage induced by artificial compound-metal-O2 systems. Sequence specific photoreaction between DNA and psoralenes is briefly discussed. A new method for selective removal of thymine from DNA utilizing photochemical reaction is also described in detail.

It has been recently found that Europa, the second satellite of Jupiter, has warm water under its icy surface. Biological explorations are needed so as to investigate the existence of life on Europa and to clarify the origin of life on the Earth. A preliminary analysis is carried out on flight trajectories from the Earth to Jupiter and on the feasibility of aerobraking in Jovian atmosphere for deploying a satellite around Europa. Several interplanetary orbits from the Earth to Jupiter are calculated and that having the smallest Jovian insertion energy is selected. It is clearly shown that aerobraking is by far more advantageous for reduction of satellite weight than retrofiring of rocket motors.

Fifty years after the discovery of the double helical structure of DNA, the complete sequence of the human genome has been determined. All genetic information, which is necessary for life, is written in 30 billion base pairs of DNA. Many diseases, including cancer, hereditary and viral diseases, can be understood at the DNA sequence level. Local DNA conformations are thought to play an important role in biological processes such as gene expression. Therefore, DNA sequences and local DNA conformation are targets of novel drugs that would precisely switch certain genes on or off. Modified bases that perform various functions can also be incorporated into defined DNA sequences. Since DNA can be amplified by PCR and in other organisms, DNA becomes a promising unit for nanotechnology applications. In this review, we focus on the sequence and conformation-specific chemical reactions that occur in DNA, and the prospective uses of the chemical biology of DNA will be discussed.

By the completion of the human genome project, many diseases including cancer, hereditary and viral diseases can be understood by the DNA sequence level. Control of the specific gene expression will provide ultimate gene therapy. Minor groove binding polyamides containing N-methylpyrrole and N-methylimidazole amino acids exhibit promising performance based on the recognition of nucleic acid sequences. Various types of sequence-specific DNA binding agents are developed and used for the regulation of gene expression. We synthesized novel type of polyamide-alkylator conjugates. These synthetic compounds alkylated predetermined DNA sequences selectively, and also some of them possessed selective potency for certain cancer cell lines. In this review, we will focus on recent progress of minor groove binding polyamides that play important roles in the rational recognition of nucleic acid sequences. One of the future directions of rational design of molecular medicine in the post genome era is proposed.

In conversational dialogue, a talker sometimes asks questions that relate to the other talker's personality, such as his/her favorites and experiences. This behavior also appears in conversational dialogues with a dialogue system; therefore, the system should be developed so that it responds to this kind of questions. Previous systems realized this function by creating question-answer pairs by hand. However, there is no work that examines the coverage of the created question-answer pairs over real conversations. This study analyzes a huge amount of question-answer pairs created by many question-generators, with one answer-generator for each character. Our analysis shows that 41% of personality questions that appeared in real conversations are covered by the created pairs. We also investigated the types of questions that are frequently asked.

人手で構築した発話生成ルールを用いる手法と,ユーザ発話の内容と係り受け関 にある内容を大量のテキストデータから抽出し発話生成に用いる統計的手法と の組み合わせに基づく対話システムの構築法を提案する.具体的には,二手法 が生成した発話から適切な発話を選択する手法を考案した.実験を通して本システ の有用性と課題を議論する.

Supersonic combustion using a catalytic combustion in a cold supersonic flow field was investigated in a square duct with a backward-facing step. The free stream Mech number was M_m=1.81. Hydrogen was injected transversely behind a backward-facing step into a cold air free stream. Using a catalyst in a cold supersonic turbulent mixing layer, it was found that hydrogen reacted stably to oxygen in the air flow. The relationship between the heat release due to catalytic combustion and supersonic flow properties, which influence the supersonic combustion, was clarified experimentally. The spatial distribution of heat release generated by catalytic combustion in the supersonic turbulent mixing layer is discussed. It was found that the heat release due to the catalytic combustion had a maximum at the outer edge of the mixing layer.
