This paper describes methods of presenting sense of weight in VR for a wide range of masses. Two approaches are proposed; while lifting a virtual object, 1) the object follows participant's hand with delay, 2) the distance between the hand and the object is increased. These approaches were evaluated in a user study that utilized magnitude estimation and gripping force measurements. The results suggest that participants could perceive multiple different weights using both approaches. Moreover, the ratio between minimum and maximum value of magnitude estimations was 3.2 in the first approach and 4.4 in the second approach.

The effects of moods and emotions on correlations with direction methods for stereoscopic 3D images are the focus of this study. Specifically, we investigated the sense of fear in different 2D and 3D conditions as well as the different directing methods involved. Directional techniques were sorted into three categories according to the dynamic characteristics of the focus object in 3D space along the Z-Axis, XY-Axis, and Fixed-Axis directions. The emotional value of fear was characterized in terms of two values, valence and arousal, which were measured using the Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) and skin potential reaction (SPR). The results indicated considerable differences in terms of viewing condition, directing method, and gender. SAM measurements indicated low valence and high arousal scores in 3D viewing condition. Furthermore, the effects of directing methods depended on the center and range of 3D space. Depth representation was a more important factor for female than male subjects. The SPR frequency increased during viewing Z-Axis direction in 3D condition.

We simulated videogame scenes in simplified 3D computer graphics and evaluated the discomfort from the images by altering the simulation parameters. In the evaluation, the subjects viewed the images including oscillating motion and rotating motion with or without a fixation object. The subjective symptoms on the discomfort of image, degree of motion sickness, sense of eye movement and body movement were assessed by a 5 point rating questionnaire. Besides, the eye movements during viewing the stimuli were measured by using video camera. We found a significant relationship between the discomfort of the images and the sense of eye movement under the condition of oscillating motion. Moreover, the eye movements were reduced by adding the fixation object into the images.

This paper reports on the effect of the physical state of the body on touch sensations caused by collisions with virtual objects. The collision of a virtual object with a user's body in a virtual environment may cause an illusory touch, or haptic, sensation. We hypothesize that a real-world touch sensation of moving air on skin may augment an illusory touch sensation created by the visual representation of a collision with an object in a virtual scene. To assess this hypothesis, we performed experiments evaluating touch sensation in three conditions: with the user's body covered, with the user's body uncovered, and when blowing air onto the user. Our results showed that a touch sensation was strongly induced in the condition where the user's body was uncovered. Furthermore, the effect of blowing air onto the user differed depending on the body part that was stimulated and the representation of the virtual object. These results suggest that the top-down and bottom-up information for illusory touch sensation such as the user's physical state and the touch sensation of the air on skin had affected each other.

In this study, the authors developed and evaluated the virtual classroom system on cyberspace for hospitalized children. In this system, children can study and communicate with children of the outside of the hospital. The authors evaluated this system from the following viewpoints; (1) Psycho-physiological effects on children. (2) Usability of interface. (3) Spatial design of cyberspace. This paper reports the results of the experiment and discusses the validity of cyberspace in terms of education for hospitalized children.

The 'body image' is a sense of ownership of our own body. Some report shows the body image is induced by the integration of cross-modal perception, such as, visual, tactile and proprioceptive perception. Other report indicates that synchronized cross-modal stimuli could induce the body image to visible object and subjects experienced that the visible object was recognizable as a part of their body. Accordingly, the development of new interface system for virtual reality is expected by using the body image. However, the body image is subjective experience and is hard to observe objectively. In this paper, we examine whether the measurement of brain activation using Near Infra-red Spectroscopy (NIRS) would able to observe the body image which is induced by cross-modal stimulation. In this experiment, the brain activation was measured around the temporal lobe to the occipital lobe, and asynchronously visual and proprioception stimuli have given to the subjects synchronously to change their body image. As a result, brain activities were observed around the Superior Temporal Sulcus (STS), the inferior parietal areas and the Extrastriate Body Area (EBA) which is reported that related to distinction of other body. Controversially, Subjects reported that they experienced the body image to the CG model displayed as visual stimuli. Our result shows there are some possibilities that the body image would be induced by some inconsistent cross-modal stimuli.

This paper describes the evaluation of a VR content that presents the biometrics data of a fencing athlete during a match as audio-visual stimuli. We conducted two experiments: 1) the effect of marking the gaze point, 2) the effect of combining the forearm movements of the athlete and participant. The results of the first experiment showed that this approach significantly led the participants’ eyes to athlete’s gaze point. The results of second experiment showed this approach did not affect participants’ ownership and agency. However, some people were induced their forearm movement to athletes’ movement.

Recently, attention is being brought to exposure treatment methods using Virtual Reality for those suffering from panic disorder accompanied by agoraphobia. Overseas, contents for exposure treatment introducing Virtual Reality began development in the 1990s and positive evaluations are being made regarding its treatment methods and treatment effects. On one hand, there are still no cases developed professionally in Korea and even evaluations cases introduced into treatment are being made using contents developed overseas. For such reasons, this study has attempted to develop Virtual Reality Exposure contents which fully reflect Japan's culture and environment. Developed contents were focused on subway environments where avoidance was shown the most among patients receiving treatment in community hospitals. Contents were produced through Virtual Reality by modeling existing places and objects in their actual size to express a high sense of reality. Also, mutual interaction functions were strengthened to allow exposure suitable to the diverse symptoms of each patient. Although evaluations through this study are still in progress, changes in avoidance behavior regarding anxiety and fear are being confirmed and treatment effects are being verified through additional experiments.
