当論文においては、西太平洋及びインド洋における熱帯低気圧とMadden-Julian振動(MJO)との関連を記述する。熱帯低気圧は振動の積雲対流活動活発期に生じ易いし、雲塊は下層の低気圧性渦度の周辺に存在し、発散場はMJOに伴う積雲対流活動の西方極側に現れる。熱帯低気圧や台風の絶対数は振動の積雲対流活動活発期に増大するが、弱い熱帯低気圧から転化する熱帯低気圧と台風の比率は、積雲対流活動活発期と乾燥期において同一である。積雲対流活動活発期においてより多くの熱帯低気圧や台風が存在するのは、当時期により多くの弱い熱帯低気圧が存在することによる。当研究の第三の結果は、積雲対流活動活発期の熱帯低気圧の活動度がMJOの活動度に限定されていない点である。事実、我々はMJOと独立かつ無作為に選ばれた積雲対流活動活発期において熱帯低気圧の活動度が同等に増大することを見いだした。結論として、MJOは熱帯低気圧に影響を及ぼす独自の機構を持つと言うより、むしろそれに伴う熱帯の変動度が大きな割合を占めるという点で重要である。

The juvenile of Indonesian coelacanth, Latimeria menadoensis is here described for the first time in detail with comparison to embryos of Latimeria chalumnae. The juvenile was found in free swimming at 164.6 m depth off Manado, Indonesia on the 6th October in 2009. Because the total length of the juvenile is 31.5 cm, which is smaller than the embryos of L. chalumnae, it is speculated that not much time has passed from its birth. The depth at which the juvenile was found is within the range of the depth where adult L. menadoensis were observed, hidden in a narrow and long overhang where large predators could not enter. The juvenile has a more slender body, smaller orbit, shorter and deeper posterior part of the body (caudal peduncle) between the second dorsal and the anal fins and anterior ends of the dorsal and ventral lobes of the caudal fin (the third dorsal and second anal fins), longer dorsal and ventral lobes of the caudal fin (the third dorsal and second anal fins), broader peduncles of broader lobed fins, larger first dorsal fin and longer supplementary lobe of the caudal fin (caudal fin) than embryos of L. chalumnae. This indicates clear differences in the first ontogenetic stages of the two species, although adults have almost the same morphological features. Latimeria menadoensis appears to reproduce in a rather confined area, because both the juvenile and adults have been found within the same area inside of Manado Bay.

現代の環境科学が取り組むべき課題は,行動を誘因するような説得力に富む情報を提供することだけではなく,社会の想像力を刺激し,これまで目に見えていなかった未来を見るよう働きかけることにある。同時に現代の政策立案プロセスは,制度構造の限界に加えて,マルチステークホルダーのニーズや見解に包摂的に取り組むことに限界を抱えている。シナリオ手法を用いて政策の共創に取り組むことは,双方の課題に解決をもたらしうる。なぜなら,多様な主体が複数の分野とガバナンスのスケールをまたぎ,多様な学習形態を認識し,多元的な未来を批判的に探求するプロセスを促進するからである。本論文では,未来を批判的に「知り」,「遊び」,「実験する」ことを可能にするツールとして,また,政策の共創に対する関わり方(エンゲージメント)の幅を広げ,多様な社会アクターのアクセスを拡大できるツールとして,ソフトシナリオ手法の枠組みを紹介する。FEASTプロジェクトの事例研究から,ナラティブ,シリアスゲーム,インタラクティブ・アート,モデルを用いることで,どのように未来のシナリオが関わりのための超学際的空間を提供し,どのように主体,政策変容,スケールがフードポリシーに関するシナリオ共同作成プロセスの中で相互に作用しているかを示す。フードポリシーのガバナンスは関連諸政策間の縦割りにより分断されているが,各事例研究の成果から,ソフトシナリオ手法を用いることで全く異なるステークホルダー間にコンセンサスを構築し,持続可能なフードシステムの醸成に必要な批判的思考を引き出すことが可能であり,分断を克服できることが示唆された。

Ultra-low field (ULF) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered an innovative MRI technique that can be combined with magnetoencephalography (MEG). In this study, a 1-mT ULF-MRI system without a pre-polarization technique aiming at combining an MEG system is developed. The intensity of the static magnetic field B0 is decided considered to be 1 mT because of the limitation of the magnetic field exposed to our MEG sensor made of superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs). A square-shaped (750 mm × 750 mm) B0-coil based on a Merritt-type configuration is fabricated. The inhomogeneity of B0 is less than 0.07 % in the ±125 mm area. Further, an induction coil is employed to detect the magnetic resonance signal instead of the SQUID sensors of the MEG to confirm the feasibility of realizing MRI measurement at 1 mT without the pre-polarization technique. Relaxation time measurements and MR imaging of a phantom made of a CuSO4 aqueous solution are performed. Reasonable longitudinal and transverse relaxation times are obtained, and clear shapes of the phantom are obtained using the gradient- and spin-echo pulse sequences with this ULF-MRI system. These results indicate the potential of the proposed 1-mT ULF-MRI to effectively integrate ULF-MRI and MEG systems without pre-polarization.

Oxygen radicals, and other reactive oxygen species, may play an important role in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases. Mechanisms that account for oxidative stress in different cardiovascular diseases are diverse; for example, increases in activity of NAD(P)H oxidase, "uncoupling" of nitric oxide synthase, and maladaptive changes in expression of antioxidants can all contribute to increases in oxidative stress. Very different patterns of pro-and antioxidant mechanisms that contribute to increases in oxygen radicals in atherosclerotic plaques, hemorrhagic strokes, and aortic valve stenosis have been observed. A disappointment, in relation to the hypothesis that oxygen radicals contribute to cardiovascular risk, is that many studies indicate that antioxidant vitamins fail to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Better understanding of mechanisms that lead to increases in oxidative stress in different cardiovascular diseases may lead to more effective antioxidant prevention or treatment of diseases. The analysis of children’s activity-travel patterns has gained increasing attention in a variety of research fields. Most of the previous studies suggested that more compact development promotes less car-dependent travel among children. Unfortunately distinguishing what was a cultural artefact and what was a ‘universal’ truth of children’s travel is difficult as existing literature on children’s travel vary not just by country, but also by measures and analysis. The aim of this paper is to help bridge this gap of knowledge. Using the UK National Travel Survey and the Osaka Regional Area person trip datasets, this paper compares children’s travel behaviour in two countries with significantly different cultures. This paper discusses both consistencies and discrepancies of travel behaviours between the countries to highlight what factors are consistent despite cultural differences, and what may vary within cultures or different built environments.

The Gal4/UAS system is a versatile tool to manipulate exogenous gene expression of cells spatially and temporally in many model organisms. Many variations of light-controllable Gal4/UAS system are now available, following the development of photo-activatable (PA) molecular switches and integration of these tools. However, many PA-Gal4 transcription factors have undesired background transcription activities even in dark conditions, and this severely attenuates reliable light-controlled gene expression. Therefore, it is important to develop reliable PA-Gal4 transcription factors with robust light-induced gene expression and limited background activity. By optimization of synthetic PA-Gal4 transcription factors, we have validated configurations of Gal4 DNA biding domain, transcription activation domain and blue light-dependent dimer formation molecule Vivid (VVD), and applied types of transcription activation domains to develop a new PA-Gal4 transcription factor we have named eGAV (enhanced Gal4-VVD transcription factor). Background activity of eGAV in dark conditions was significantly lower than that of hGAVPO, a commonly used PA-Gal4 transcription factor, and maximum light-induced gene expression levels were also improved. Light-controlled gene expression was verified in cultured HEK293T cells with plasmid-transient transfections, and in mouse EpH4 cells with lentivirus vector-mediated transduction. Furthermore, light-controlled eGAV-mediated transcription was confirmed in transfected neural stem cells and progenitors in developing and adult mouse brain and chick spinal cord, and in adult mouse hepatocytes, demonstrating that eGAV can be applied to a wide range of experimental systems and model organisms.Key words: optogenetics, Gal4/UAS system, transcription, gene expression, Vivid

Purpose: Our aim was to evaluate the development of new significant mitral regurgitation and long-term survival after mitral repair surgery in functional mitral regurgitation.Methods: A retrospective observational analysis of the recurrence of functional mitral regurgitation (ischemic and nonischemic) and global mortality during follow-up of 176 patients who underwent mitral repair surgery between 1999 and 2018 in our center was conducted.Results: The etiology of functional mitral regurgitation was ischemic in 55.7% of cases. After surgery, mitral regurgitation was 0-I in 92.3% of cases. We conducted a long-term clinical follow-up of a mean 42.2 months and an echocardiographic follow-up of a mean 41.8 months. We observed mitral regurgitation of at least grade II in 52 patients (36.9%). Survival at 1, 3, and 5 years was 78.8%, 66.7%, and 52.3%, respectively. Predictive factors for global mortality were age (hazard ratio = 1.038, p = 0.01) and a depressed preoperative ejection fraction. After a competing risk analysis, we found the only predictive factor for the recurrence of mitral regurgitation in our series to be age (sub-hazard ratio = 1.03, 95% confidence interval = 1.01–1.06, p = 0.016).Conclusion: Repair surgery for functional mitral regurgitation shows age as the only independent predictor of recurrence. Age and depressed ejection fraction were predictors of mortality.
