Three new glycosides: thotneoside A (quercetin 3-O-(6″-O-phenylacetyl)-β-D-galactopyranoside) (1), thotneoside B (quercetin 3-O-(6″-O-phenylacetyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside) (2) and thotneoside C (3-methyl-2-butenoic acid 1-O-β-D-glucopyranoside) (3), together with nine known compounds; quercetin (4), quercetin 3-O-β-D-galactopyranoside (5), quercetin 3-O-(6″-O-galloyl)-β-D-galactopyranoside (6), quercetin 3-O-β-D-galacturonopyranoside (7), quercetin 3-O-β-D-glucuronopyranoside (8), quercetin 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside (9), rutin (10), quercetin 3-O-α-L-arabinopyranoside (11) and 2,4,6-trihydroxyacetophenone 2-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (12) have been isolated from the shade dried leaves of Aconogonon molle, commonly known as “Thotne″ in Nepal. The structures were elucidated on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic methods. All of these compounds were isolated for the first time from A. molle and their in vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay. Quercetin (4) and its glycosides (1–2, 5–11) showed potent free radical scavenging activity.

The introduction of combined anti-retroviral therapy (cART) in 1996, along with a continual breakthrough in anti-human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) drugs, has improved the life expectancies of HIV-1-infected individuals. However, the incidence of drug-resistant viruses between individuals undergoing cART and treatment-naïve individuals is a common challenge. Therefore, there is a requirement to explore potential drug targets by considering various stages of the viral life cycle. For instance, the late stage, or viral release stage, remains uninvestigated extensively in antiviral drug discovery. In this study, we prepared a natural plant library and selected candidate plant extracts that inhibited HIV-1 release based on our laboratory-established screening system. The plant extracts from Epilobium hirsutum L. and Chamerion angustifolium (L.) Holub, belonging to the family Onagraceae, decreased HIV-1 release and accelerated the apoptosis in HIV-1-infected T cells but not uninfected T cells. A flavonol glycoside quercetin with oenothein B in Onagraceae reduced HIV-1 release in HIV-1-infected T cells. Moreover, extracts from Chamerion angustifolium (L.) Holub and Senna alexandrina Mill. inhibited the infectivity of progeny viruses. Together, these results suggest that C. angustifolium (L.) Holub contains quercetin with oenothein B that synergistically blocks viral replication and kills infected cells via an apoptotic pathway. Consequently, the plant extracts from the plant library of Turkey might be suitable candidates for developing novel anti-retroviral drugs that target the late phase of the HIV-1 life cycle.

Introduction: Patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) often demonstrate liver injury, as reflected by an elevated serum level of alanine aminotransferase (ALT). This study examined whether the presence of liver injury could be predicted based on findings from conventional sonography. Methods: Subjects were 81 adult female NAFLD patients (mean age, 62 ± 14 years). Defining liver injury as ALT levels >30 IU/L, sonographic findings were compared between patients with and without liver injury. In turn, ALT levels and liver size (defined as the sum of the length of the right lobe [R1+R2] and left lobe [L1+L2] were compared among the three classical grades of fatty liver by sonography. Results: Grade 3 fatty liver, deep attenuation, and hepatomegaly demonstrated relatively high odds ratios for the presence of liver injury. Median L1+L2 and R1+R2+L1+L2 were significantly longer in patients with liver injury (164 mm [interquartile range, 149–178 mm] and 289 mm [267–314 mm]) than in those without (147 mm [130–156 mm] and 260 mm [247–281 mm], respectively; p <0.001 each). ALT levels, L1+L2, and R1+R2+L1+L2 increased with increasing fatty liver grade. Conclusion: The present study suggests that grade 3 fatty liver, deep attenuation and/or hepatomegaly allow easy, non-invasive prediction of the presence of liver injury in elderly women with NAFLD using conventional sonography.

父娘がともに注意欠如・多動症(attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder;ADHD)を発症した2症例を経験した.ADHDは児童思春期に診察される場合が多いが,成人後にも症状が残遺することもあり,慢性的な疾患であると考えられる.この症例報告では,家族間であっても,有効な治療薬において差異が認められた.このような家族間での差異を多面発現性と多遺伝子モデルに基づいて考察した.

Coexistence between ZigBee and Wi-Fi technologies, which operate within the same frequency band, is increasing with the widespread use of the IoT (Internet of Things). ZigBee devices suffer significant decreases in the sink arrival rate of packets in the presence of Wi-Fi interference. To overcome this problem, many channel control methods have been proposed. These methods switch only ZigBee channels to avoid interference withWi-Fi. In contrast, we propose a cooperative channel control method for improving ZigBee packet arrival rate by controlling both the Wi-Fi and ZigBee channels. Specifically, the proposed method not only controls ZigBee devices and channels but also requests a temporary pause in the use of specific Wi-Fi channels. Finally, computer simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed method from the viewpoints of ZigBee's packet arrival rate and applications' satisfaction. In addition, the feasibility of the proposed method is also confirmed by experiments with prototyping.

JR内房線の竹岡変電所は山間部に設置されており、東京電力の特高回線が付近に存在していない。この為隣接する佐貫町変電所にて東京電力受電した交流60kVを33kVに降圧し「き電補助線」を通じて電源供給を行っている。き電補助線は鳥害や樹木によるトリップが多く設備の老朽化も進み対策に苦慮している。当該変電所付近は単線で列車負荷も大きくない事から電力貯蔵装置を設置した場合に列車運転可能かを調査し、き電補助線と変電設備スリム化に繋がるか検証を行った。取り組み内容としては変電所にて負荷データ採取を行いシミュレーションを行ったところ2000kWの貯蔵装置を設置することで列車運転が可能であるとの結論に達した。

Purpose: This study evaluated the impact of CYP2D6 polymorphism, and particularly CYP2D6*10 alleles, on the steady-state plasma concentrations of mirtazapine (MIR) and its metabolite N-desmethylmirtazapine (DMIR) in Japanese psychiatric patients.Patients and Methods: The subjects were 75 Japanese patients treated with racemic MIR. The steady-state plasma concentrations of MIR and DMIR were measured using liquid chromatography. The CYP2D6 genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction. Three subjects whose plasma levels of MIR and DMIR were below the limit of detection were regarded as non-adherent and excluded, and 4 subjects having the CYP2D6*5 allele (CYP2D6*1/CYP2D6*5 and CYP2D6*2/CYP2D6*5 (n = 3) and CYP2D6*5/CYP2D6*10 (n = 1)) were excluded from the analysis in order to eliminate the effect of the CYP2D6*5 allele. Accordingly, data from 68 subjects were subjected to analysis.Results: There were no significant differences in the plasma concentrations of MIR or DMIR (all corrected for dose and body weight) among different CYP2D6 genotypes. Multiple regression analysis also revealed that age affects MIR (corrected for dose and body weight) (p=0.079). Also, multiple regression analysis revealed that age correlated significantly to the plasma concentration of DMIR (corrected for dose and body weight) (p=0.026). Neither sex nor the number of CYP2D6*10 alleles were significant factors for either the plasma concentration of MIR (corrected for dose and body weight) or the plasma concentration of DMIR (corrected for dose and body weight).Conclusion: CYP2D6*10 polymorphism did not significantly affect the steady-state plasma levels of MIR and DMIR in Japanese patients, but age had a significant effect on the plasma levels of DMIR.

This paper briefly reviews the activities of the International Council for Science (ICSU) World Data Centers (WDCs) in Japan at a time of great change in the data and information structures of the ICSU ? the creation of the World Data System (WDS) in 2009. Seven WDCs are currently operating in Japan: the WDC for Airglow, the WDC for Cosmic Rays, the WDC for Geomagnetism, Kyoto, the WDC for Ionosphere, the WDC for Solar Radio Emission, and the WDC for Space Science Satellites. Although these WDCs are highly active, along-term support system must be established to ensure the stewardship and provision of quality-assessed data and data services to the international science community.
