The purpose of this paper is to theoretically identify that there exist stationary distributions in the system with transaction lost. In order to examine this type of system, we formulate and analyze the input/output process as the counting process based on point process. Accordingly, we make clear that this stationary distributions are the geometrical distributions as well. We, also analyze the average transit time in the stationary. We presented the simulation results in order to evaluate this system.

Pressure ulcer is a symptom frequently found in the patients incapable of moving for themselves in paraplegia or defects in central nervous system. It is caused mainly from chronic pressurization of skin tissue, but many other factors are also reported to promote the pressure ulcer. Shear force is among them. Biomechanical researches suggest mechanochemical reaction of cell that can disturb to repair the wound tissue, however, few studies were made about the relationship between the shear force and the pressure ulcer, because of the difficulty in measuring the shear force without affecting the skin condition itself. To measure the shear force without such interference, we have developed a planar shear force gauge, and measured the skin shear force for its preliminary evaluation. The device was found to be useful for the measurement of the local shear force and the skin deformation. However, further investigation on the material for the torsion frame and the fabrication accuracy is necessary.

The authors have conducted studies on Arabic telop recognition to develop a system for video retrieval by keyword to index and edit Arabic broadcast programs received daily and stored in a big database. This paper describes a dedicated OCR for recognizing low resolution telop in video images. A telop recognition system consisting of text line extraction, word segmentation and segmentation-recognition of words is developed and the performance was experimentally evaluated using datasets of frame images extracted from AlJazeera broadcasting programs. Character recognition of moving telop is difficult due to combing noise caused by the interlacing of scan-lines. A technique to detect and eliminate the combing noise to correctly recognize the moving telop is proposed. This paper also proposes a technique based on insertion operation with minimum edit distance between successive two telops to connect them. The method to connect the moving telops is necessary for automatic language translation. The proposed method using edit distance for bi-gram sequence of telops (Method-B) is shown to be robust to recognition error of characters and successfully connect the telops.

A major feature of the self-organizing map (SOM) is a topology-preserving projection from the input layer to the competitive layer, and it has been used mainly as an analytical tool for discovering underlying rules in the given data set. Even though recent splendid progress in this area, there are few novel ideas to break such a conventional style. On the contrary, based on its distinctive nature, a new method for generating patterns through backward projection from the competitive layer to the input layer is proposed recently. Moreover, a promising technology for producing animation as a series of backward-projected patterns along with any pathways on the competitive layer is presented. Then, in order to carry out further considerations, some computer simulations with a variety of posed stick figures are tried in this paper. After training, four kinds of pathways, which correspond to different movements such as dancing, exercising and walking, are prepared. Though some of them does not contain any training samples, all of them worked well as we have intended in advance. As a result, it is found that the proposed method shows good performance and it is also confirmed its effectiveness.

In this paper, an illuminating method with the 1/f-fluctuation is proposed to produce the peaceful lighting stage, because it is said that the 1/f-fluctuation will make a relaxed mental state.The light intensity from the normal light bulb is changed by the phase control in the A. C. power source with the 1/f-fluctuation signals generated by performing the First Fourier Transformation (FFT) on the normal random numbers and by passing through the 1/f-filter. The light power spectrum is measured by calculating the picture image from the CCD camera to check the tendency of 1/f-fluctuation in the illumination from the bulb, and also in the flame light from the candle. Physiological impression for the 1/f-fluctuating illumination is compared with the change of the heart rate in other lighting conditions: the normal lighting, and the flashing lighting using the random numbers. From the result of physiological measurements, the decrease in the heart rate for the proposed 1/f-fluctuating illumination is observed.

This paper describes a method to reduce a variance of measured headway distance using stereo vision. In this method, first, headway distances are measured by both the stereo disparity and the difference of the size of a preceding vehicle on image, and then one of them which has smaller variance is chosen as the headway distance. The size of a preceding vehicle on image is measured by a new method of detecting the edges on the preceding vehicle which alleviates the bad influence of change in back ground. A headway distance measuring system using this method has been developed, showing the effectiveness on tracking a preceding vehicle within 25m headway distance.

In this study, we propose a hybrid brain/blink computer interface based on a single-channel electroencephalography (EEG) amplifier. Eyelid closing and hard blink were selected as two possible inputs for control of the interface. A 2-min calibration was required before starting to use the interface. An algorithm for feature extraction and classification was developed for EEG signals from eyelid closing, hard blink, and resting. To evaluate the performance of the interface, we incorporated it into a personal identification number (PIN) application, in both visual and auditory modes. Experiments with 5 healthy participants revealed that the PIN application based on the interface achieved a mean accuracy of 97.40%. In conclusion, we expect that our investigation will contribute to hybrid brain-computer interface research and technologies in the near future.

Here we report the development of a personal identification number (PIN) application using a P300-based brain-computer interface (BCI). We focused on visual stimulation design for increasing the evoked potential in the brain. Single-channel electroencephalography and a computationally inexpensive algorithm were used for P300 detection. Experimental results showed that our proposed stimulus induced higher P300 amplitude than did a conventional stimulus. For a performance evaluation, we compared two versions of the proposed application, which were based on our ‘original P300 BCI’ and ‘adaptive P300 BCI’. In the adaptive P300 BCI, we introduced a novel algorithm for P300 detection to improve the information transfer rate while maintaining acceptable accuracy. Experiments with 10 healthy participants revealed that the original P300 BCI achieved mean accuracy of 83.50% at 11.40 bits/min and the adaptive version achieved mean accuracy of 86.00% at 18.63 bits/min.

We have developed a rehabilitation tool used for treatment of patients suffering from hemiplegia and evaluation of the paralysis-stage. The tool consists of a PC and button switches for a computer game so that it is not expensive, available in anywhere, and possible to get a change of air in the patients. In this study, we have evaluated behavior indices such as an operation time to play with the games both in healthy young students and patients with paralysis. From experimental results, it was shown that the recorded behavioral indices showed the strong dependence on the motion control function of a subject. Preceding evaluation of effectiveness in rehabilitation of the developed tool, possible application of the tool in evaluation of the motion control function of the patients with hemiplegia was discussed in this paper.

In this paper, we propose an algorithm to estimate sleep quality based on a heart rate variability using chaos analysis. Polysomnography(PSG) is a conventional and reliable system to diagnose sleep disorder and to evaluate its severity and therapeatic effect, by estimating sleep quality based on multiple channels. However, a recording process requires a lot of time and a controlled environment for measurement and then an analyzing process of PSG data is hard work because the huge sensed data should be manually evaluated. On the other hand, it is focused that some people make a mistake or cause an accident due to lost of regular sleep and of homeostasis these days. Therefore a simple home system for checking own sleep is required and then the estimation algorithm for the system should be developed. Therefore we propose an algorithm to estimate sleep quality based only on a heart rate variability which can be measured by a simple sensor such as a pressure sensor and an infrared sensor in an uncontrolled environment, by experimentally finding the relationship between chaos indices and sleep quality. The system including the estimation algorithm can inform patterns and quality of own daily sleep to a user, and then the user can previously arranges his life schedule, pays more attention based on sleep results and consult with a doctor.

Since 1970s, linear models such as autoregressive (AR), moving average (MA), autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), etc. have been popular for time series data analyze and prediction. Meanwhile, artificial neural networks (ANNs), inspired by connectionism bio-informatics, have been showing their powerful abilities of function approximation, pattern recognition, dimensionality reduction, and so on since 1980s. Recently, deep belief nets (DBNs) which use multiple restricted Boltzmann machines (RBMs) and multi-layered perceptron (MLP) are proposed as time series predictors. In this study, a hybrid prediction method using DBNs and ARIMA is proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed method was confirmed by the experiments using CATS benchmark data and chaotic time series data.

It is difficult to decide the optimal neural network structure for a particular problem. We propose a solution to this problem, a new constructive learning algorithm based on division of a given learning problem. The proposed method first decomposes the original learning problem into small pieces and constructs a set of small networks which independently learn one of decomposed problems. It constructs a large network which learns the given learning problem by combining the small networks in a bottom-up manner. We demonstrate the efficiency of our learning algorithm by applying it to XOR, 3-bits parity, a non-liner function approximation, and two-spirals problem. Experimental results show that our learning algorithm can construct networks which have higher learning convergence rate and better generalization capability within less computation time than the standard back-propagation algorithms.

Start-up scheduling is aimed at minimizing the start-up time while limiting turbine rotor stresses to an acceptable level. This scheduling problem has a wide search space. In order to improve the search efficiency and robustness and to establish an adaptive search model, we propose to integrate evolutionary computation, based on Genetic Algorithms (GA), with reinforcement learning. The strategies with our proposal include: multi-boundary-based enforcement operator and multi-elitist plan. By setting a second boundary, located right outside the existing boundary containing those feasible schedules, we extend our proposed enforcement operator and the conventional elitist plan into the multi-boundary-based enforcement operator and multi-elitist plan. These two strategies work together to focus the search along the boundary, around which the optimal schedule is supposed to exist, so as to increase the search efficiency as well as its robustness. During a search process, GA guides the reinforcement learning to concentrate its learning on those promising areas instead of the entire space. In return, reinforcement learning can generate a good schedule, in the earlier stage of the search process. We obtain encouraging test results. In this paper, we propose the GA-based search model with these strategies and discuss the test results.

We propose a new ANN learning algorithm based on hierarchical clustering of training data. The proposed algorithm first constructs a tree of sub-learning problems by hiearchically clustering given learning patterns in a bottom-up manner and decides a corresponding network structure. The proposed algorithm trains the whole network giving teacher signals of the original learning problem to the output units, and trains sub-networks giving teacher signals of the divided sub-learning problems to the hidden units simultaneously. The hidden units which learn sub-learning problems become feature detectors, which promote the learning of the original learning problem. We demonstrate the advantages of our learning algorithm by solving N-bits parity problems, a non-liner function approximation, iris classification problem, and two-spirals problem. Experimen-tal results show that our learning algorithm obtains better solutions than the standard back-propagation algorithms and one of constructive algorithms in terms of the learning speed and the convergence rate.

This paper demonstrates the impact of tilted Mg ion implantation for the threshold voltage control of GaN MISFETs for the first time. The threshold voltage of the MISFETs by using Mg implantation shifts up to -1 V, whereas that without Mg ion implantation is about -8 V. The GaN MISFET achieved maximum drain current of 165 mA/mm and an extrinsic transconductance of 30 mS/mm. These results indicate a definite availability of our process in normally-off GaN MISFETs for power switching device applications.

The traditional business process design methods, in which the usecase is the most typical, have no useful framework to design the activity sequence with. Therefore, the design efficiency and quality vary widely according to the designer’s experience and skill.  In this paper, to solve this problem, we propose the business events and their state transition model (a basic business event model) based on the language/action perspective, which is the result in the cognitive science domain. In the business process design, using this model, we decide event occurrence conditions so that every event synchronizes with each other. We also propose the design pattern to decide the event occurrence condition (a business event improvement strategy). Lastly, we apply the business process design method based on the business event model and the business event improvement strategy to the credit card issue process and estimate its effect.

Clickable Real World is a new framework to realize an intuitive information search with a mobile terminal. To achieve the goal, we tackle two challenging tasks. One is landmark detection from an observing scene. Our approach detects a landmark based on an image prior. The prior is not given manually. Instead, it is generated automatically from the training samples collected from photo sharing website. Another challenging task is image annotation assisted by geolocation. We use the location of a user who uses a mobile terminal, and geolocation where the training sample images were taken. Two probabilistic models are generated to achieve image annotation. One is image-based labeling which utilizes the co-occurrence between image features and label features. The other is label-based localization which uses the consensus about the label given around the geolocation among photographers. We combine two probabilistic approaches to improve the accuracy of image annotation. We demonstrate this approach for 87 scenes in the world.

This paper proposes a signature verification technique called combined segmentation-verification based on off-line features and on-line features. We use three different off-line feature vectors extracted from full name Japanese signature image and from the sub-images of the first name and the last name. The Mahalanobis distance for each off-line feature vector is calculated for signature verification. The on-line feature based technique employs dynamic programming (DP) matching technique for time series data of the fullname signature and first name and last name. The final decision (verification) is performed by SVM (Support Vector Machine) based on the three Mahalanobis distances and three dissimilarity of the DP matching. In the evaluation test the proposed technique achieved 3.35% EER (Equal Error Rate) with even FRR (False Acceptance Rate) and FAR (False Rejection Rate), which is 3.10% lower than the best EER obtained by the individual technique. This result shows that the proposed combined segmentation-verification approach improves Japanese signature verification accuracy significantly.

In this research, mode of viewing, preference, and excitement-calm to TV contents were estimated from the hemodynamics parameter to create the estimation model. As physiology indices, the cardiovascular system was assessed by mean blood pressure (MP), heart rate (HR), stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO), and total peripheral resistance (TPR). Comfortable, arousal, vigor, preference and concentration to TV contents were assessed by visual analog scale (VAS) for mental indices. Psychological excitement-calm to TV was assessed by up and down arrow key of a keyboard in real time. Based on the above indices, the estimation model was created by using the neural network. As a conclusion, the distinction rate of the preference and the mode of viewing were each obtained to 83.3% and 75.0% at the maximum. The average error of the excitement-calm was obtained to 17%。
