<p>In this study, we used a miniature electrocardiogram (ECG) data-logger and evaluated the physiological response of carrion crows (<i>Corvus corone</i>) to an auditory repellent stimulus. Three carrion crows had an average heart rate of 243 bpm before they were exposed to the auditory stimulus. Their heart rates increased significantly to 302 bpm on initial exposure to the auditory stimulus and decreased gradually as the stimulus was repeated.</p>

<p>In 2017, it became mandatory for universities in Japan to disclose their policies in degree granting (Diploma Policy: DP, hereafter) that state standards to confer degrees. Meanwhile, since 1991, nomenclature of major fields that appear in diplomas has been the responsibility of individual universities, instead of the national regulation. This study examines whether the former reasonably evokes the latter, given that both of them are deemed to represent the learning outcomes that the graduate has obtained. In order to do so, we compared the ability of humans and that of a deep-learning system (which is based on the Character-level CNN), to match DPs and major fields that are randomly given. In the examination of human ability, which was implemented with a large enough number of participants to obtain statistically significant results, we found there were a certain number of DPs that the majority of people failed to match with major fields. Given this fact, we analyzed such DPs to demonstrate that the deep learning system shows a high success rate in sorting out the DPs that poorly evoke major fields.</p>

In present, personal identfication system have been used to input identification-numbers and passwords by keyboards and touch panels. When a user enters their identification-numbers and passwords an observer could easily see the user's secret details. In this report, new personal identification, which system constitutes tactile sense information using tactile stimuli and based on the cardinal trait of the tactile sense, is proposed.

<p>Eye movement was measured when food and wear pictures that consisted of four items with different positions were subjectively evaluated by seven-grade scale (like - dislike), and the relationship between the subjective evaluation and feature parameters obtained from eye fixation and scanpath was investigated. In results, a significant relationship between the saliency of pictures obtained by GBVS and the normalized total fixation time was not observed. And the eye movement at the initial state might be similar, independent of the saliency of items in the pictures. The fixation time to the item of the negative `dislike' evaluation became relatively longer, when the evaluation was negative irrespective of the experimental condition. These feature parameters would be useful for quantifying the evaluation of the pictures.</p>

Recently, welfare vehicles are widely used by patients and elders. Many welfare vehicles are restricted to drive indoor or on a flat road. The vehicle with free casters can not be driven well when the road surface is rolling outdoors. To design compact welfare vehicles for outdoor use at low cost, the skid steer mechanism is focused on. The skid steer vehicle (SSV) is well known for its high traveling ability on an off-road. However, the SSV has disadvantage that the maneuvering assistance is required because its steering is highly affected by road condition. This study aims a steering assistance of SSV for patients and elders by using Model Error Compensator (MEC) that suppresses the modeling error by traditional PID control. The proposed controller consists of MEC and Extended Kalman Filter to reduce the sensor and the system noise assuming the undulating and skiddy roads. The effectiveness of the proposed control system is verified by the driving simulation considering the drivers weight and the road conditions.

This paper proposes a design method of dynamic quantizers for MIMO networked control systems. It is well known that feedback type dynamic quantizers are effective for quantization of the data series in the meaning of noise shaping. The dynamic quantizers include a set of a dynamic filter and a static quantizer. When it is required to use the quantizer under the network communication, the data size of signal should be minimized appropriately by the quantizers. The authors have proposed a design method of the dynamic quantizers for SISO systems based on the communication rate constraint. In this paper, the design method is extended to MIMO systems. By this extension, we can handle the communication rate constraint for a kind of concentrated systems. In the setting of the quantizer for MIMO system, bit assignment is important matter for appropriate design of information flow. The effectiveness of proposed design method is shown by numerical examples.

The generation of handwritten character by computers is tried in this study. First, the features of handwritten characters have been analyzed in the frequency region. It has been understood that there are some frequency characteristics, which look like 1/f or white spectra, at the positions of the edge and the center of gravity of the character. Next, the character is approximated with B-spline curve, and the control-point of B-spline curve is fluctuated base on the spectrum analysis. The character generated in this study looks like that generated by handwritten.

The design theory for a band pass filter (BPF) is applied for the analysis of the resonant-type wireless power transfer system. Since the system transmits the electromagnetic energy through evanescent wave coupling between two resonators, it is just a two-stage band pass filter, as long as the circuit matching is taken into account.The present design theory allows different terminal resistances, that is, the generator and load impedances can be different. Since the load for the power transfer varies according to the practical applications, matching ability for arbitrary load is quite important.In addition, the transfer loss is analytically derived by the BPF theory, which has not been given so far. The analytical expression shows what parameters are crucial for the wireless power transfer.Some comments are given about the term “magnetic resonance” that is frequently used among the researchers of wireless power transfer. It is only adequate to describe the resonance of the precession of spins (magnetic moments) that is magnetized. “Magnetic resonance” should be read “magnetic coupling” for the present system.

Neuronal systems are dynamical. In the dynamical system, the externally-driven responses, called transient dynamics, are stimulus-specific but reproducible. Under the assumption that the neuronal system is deterministic, we here hypothesized that such reproducible transient activities could produce computational capability in a chaotic dynamical system. To test this hypothesis, we estimated the maximal Lyapunov exponent of neuronal activities in the primary visual cortex (V1) of mice, and quantified their information processing capacity in the transient dynamics. Consequently, V1 was characterized as a chaotic system, where almost identical input time-series led to different trajectories. We also demonstrated that, when mice were visually stimulated with drifting gratings, the trajectories contained the input time-series information for at least 5.2 s after stimulation. These results suggest that computational capability in V1 emerges from reproducible transient activities in the chaotic system. Yet, the estimate information processing capacities in V1 were much lower than those in theoretical studies. Further verification is still required to elucidate the discrepancy between theoretical and experimental results.

A new electroabsorption modulator operating at a parallel electric-field to the quantum wells is proposed and its modulation characteristics have been calculated. Transverse p-i-n structure on semi-insulating substrate enables us to apply a parallel field for MQW layers and results in low device capacitance and high-speed operation. The exciton resonance can easily broaden and disappear at field-intensity of 10⁴ V/cm, one tenth of the perpendicular field previously used. A 3-dB bandwidth and operation voltage required for 20 dB extinction ratio are estimated to be over 250 GHz and less than 1 V, respectively, with transmission loss of less than 3 dB. High allowability of high incidental optical power and negative chirp operation are also discussed for this structure.

Weather derivatives are getting to be powerful tools for weather risk hedging. A popular method which draws out valid prices of weather derivatives is a stochastic modeling approach. In the method, expected payoffs of weather derivatives based on stochastic weather models are regarded as their valid prices. Although useful stochastic models of temperature have been shown, stochastic models of daily rainfall are still being developed. Therefore, it is considered that pricing of daily rainfall derivatives is difficult. This paper shows a new stochastic daily rainfall model for pricing daily rainfall options. The new model in which a modified geometric distribution model is applied can express stochastic features of daily rainfall. Furthermore, this paper also shows that the combination model of the Markov chain rainy day model and the new model can express stochastic features and risks of daily rainfall option payoffs.

In cellular mobile communication systems, a channel assignment problem has been extensively studied. In order to avoid exhaustive search, the number of reallocatable channel is limited only one in TPB method which is one of dynamic channel assignment proposed by Chang. In this paper, a dynamic channel assignment by using the maximum neural network with reinforced self-feedback (MNN-RS) is proposed. From numerical experiments, it is confirmed that the proposal improves blocking probability and reduces the probability that blocking probability exceeds arrowable rate. Lastly the proposed model is implemented on Xilinx FPGA XCV300E and scalability is discussed.

Speech recognition systems have come to be used widely. When any speech recognition system is disturbed by surrounding noises, considerable reduction in the recognition rate is inevitable. It is much desired to develop noise reduction methods so that any speech recognition system can be used in realistic environments. We propose a novel scheme especially effective for reducing the noise generated in the vehicles. The reduction is achieved through image processing techniques applied to the corresponding spectrograms. Experiments have been conducted on speech sounds in the vehicles. The performances have been evaluated in terms of the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The proposed scheme has been compared with the conventional spectral subtraction method, and found to be promising especially for speeches corrupted with great amount of car noises.

This paper presents electroencephalogram-based control of a mobile robot. The control purpose is to achieve direction control of a mobile robot only by electroencephalogram. We develop an algorithm for detecting direction thinking (‘going left’ or ‘going right’) and apply it to direction control of a mobile robot. The detecting algorithm is based on time-frequency domain analysis using continuous wavelet transformation. Our experimental results demonstrate the possibility of achieving direction control of a mobile robot only by electroencephalogram.

Differential equations are considered to be a fundamental tool in many areas of engineering. The goal of our project is to develop an education system that teaches differential equations, in which exercise and assessment problems are automatically generated and delivered to the students. A student's comprehension is identified using his or her answer history record of past answers, and problems at the appropriate level of difficulty are selected and delivered to the student. The proposed education system is implemented by MATLAB.Item characteristic parameters of each class of problem are equated using test result from 183 students in advance. The implemented proposed system has been examined by 13 examinees in 4 weeks. The experimental results show that the proposed system can deliver suitable problem for each student, and all students can improve their performance on solving differential equation through the experiment.

Tracing control is used in various precision processing systems for industrial products. It is important for a tracing control system to be maintained so as to achieve the accuracy of positioning of the gap between the workpiece and the machining tool during the operation. For this requirement, the control gain is implemented as a look-up table corresponding to the gap. This controller is also used to attenuate the effect of an unevenness of the workpiece which is regarded as a measurable disturbance in the output of the tracing control system. In this paper, we present a data-driven update method of table-typed controller gain in tracing control system for disturbance attenuation.

In this study, we evaluated observers' impressions on different styles of make-up applications. We showed the observers various styles of make-up for 3DCG characters, and they scored their impression of the made-up faces. In experiment 1, to identify the impression dimensions for the made-up faces, we had 38 undergraduate subjects evaluate 4 make-up styles using 23 adjectives. As a result, we extracted 2 factors, "external appearance" and "internal feeling" about the characters. In experiment 2, we had 70 undergraduate subjects evaluate 5 make-up styles using 7 adjectives. We applied the “positioning analysis" method for the SD data, and mapped the loading values for make-up styles (targets) and adjectives (scales) on a 2 dimensional plane. The results showed that the adjectives were different for each make-up styles, suggesting that the impression of CG characters can be controlled by make-up using texture synthesis.
