We present self-assembled conjugated polymer microspheres that act as whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators. For the preparation of conjugated polymer microspheres, vapor diffusion and miniemulsion methods are adopted. For the vapor diffusion method to obtain microspheres, amorphous aggregation of the polymers are crucial by introducing sterically bulky moieties that largely twists the polymer main chain. Focused laser irradiation to the perimeter of the microspheres excites WGM, where sharp and periodic lines appear in the PL spectrum. With a benefit of the high light confinement properties, we demonstrate long distance, directional, and efficient light energy transfer and wavelength conversion through bispheres. Furthermore, WGM lasing is achieved from conjugated polymer microspheres upon femtosecond pumping. Conjugated polymer microsphere resonators have advantages of high photoabsorptivity, high refractive index, and inherent conducting properties, as well as the simple fabrication process, which are valuable for applications to optical circuits, electrically-driven lightings, and chemical and biological sensors

Cr 2+ doped II-VI chalcogenides (Cr:ZnSe, Cr:ZnS, Cr:CdSe, etc.) are attractive laser media for direct access to the mid-infrared (MIR) region, because they possess a broad fluorescence spectrum and a large stimulated-emission cross section. Using them as laser media allows us to obtain superb tunable laser and femtosecond laser capabilities in the mid-IR region. In this paper, we review the optical properties of Cr 2+ doped II-VI chalcogenides, pump sources, the recent progress of Cr 2+ doped II-VI chalcogenide lasers, and our mid-IR lasers based on Cr:ZnSe and Cr:CdSe.

Holography is an ideal three-dimensional display technique. However, its electronic implementation requires light modulation by tremendous number of pixels whose pitch should be comparable to the wavelength of light. In this paper, several techniques proposed to overcome the above difficulty are shown; the technique using multiple spatial light modulators, the time-multiplexing technique, the technique using acousto-optic modulators, the resolution redistribution technique, and the horizontally scanning technique. Especially, the horizontally scanning technique is explained in detail; it is realized using the screen scanning system and the viewing-zone scanning system. The 360-degree holographic display is also realized based on the latter system.

Molecules exposed to few-cycle intense laser fields (> 1014 W/cm2) undergo a rapid bond breaking process called Coulomb explosion. Since the momenta of the resultant fragment ions reflect the geometrical structure of the target molecule, Coulomb explosion provides a direct access to the instantaneous structure of molecules during chemical reaction. Combined with the pump-probe scheme in ultrafast spectroscopy, Coulomb explosion imaging serves as a unique means to probe ultrafast molecular reaction processes in real time. Here we review this novel approach in ultrafast spectroscopy, with the applications to ultrafast isomerization of deuterated acetylene dication (C2D2 2+).

The author and his coworkers have developed a practical model of the CO2 laserscalpel for neurosurgery. The working group consists of neurosurgeons, engineers andsponsors. The author started the studies on the development of a practical model of thecarbon dioxide laser surgical unit for neurosurgery in 1969 and developed three types ofthe CO2 laser scalpels during the past 9 years in cooperation the members of the workinggroup. The first model, type 1, was an experimental laser scalpel with which the workinggroup studied the biomedical qualities of the CO2 laser. The second model, type2, wasdesigned for clinical use. But this model was cumbersome and insufficient in its abilitiesto be applied to neurosurgery. Therefore, we developed the third model, type 3, by imp-roving the demerits of the former model. Using this newly developed model, MEDILASERMODEL MEL-442, the nickname of which is “TAKYTOM-77”, we performed 80 cases ofsurgery with satisfactory results.This paper divides into two parts, Part 1 and Part 2. In Part 1, detail of the devi-ces was explained particularly on the points of improvement with a historical note. In Part 2, biomedical qualities of the CO2 laser, animal experiments, and such clinicalexperiences as the surgery of brain tumors, pigmentary nevus, cervical erosion, etc. were described with the studies on the hazards and personnel protection.The CO2 laser scalpel enables the operator to perform not only bloodless and precisesurgery, but also various epoch-making treatments which have been impossible with theconventional modalities.

We overview progress in quantum dot (QD) lasers, emphasizing the advantage of the QD lasers for application to laser processing technology. Recent advances in our development of the QD lasers toward high quantum efficiency and high out power at the NEDO project are also discussed.

The laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectra for C<SUB>2</SUB> Swan system (d<SUP>3</SUP><I>&pi;</I><SUB>g</SUB>-a<SUB>3</SUB><I>&pi;</I><SUB>u</SUB>) were observed with an Ar<SUP>+</SUP> laser. Two laser lines of 472.7 and 514.5nm coincided with two ro-vibronic transitions: <I>R</I>(4) (<I>&Omega;</I>=2-2, =1-0) and <I>Q</I>(21) (<I>&Omega;</I>=2-2, <I>v</I>=0-0). The analysis yielded the vibrational parameters for the a<SUP>3</SUP><I>&pi;</I><SUB>u</SUB> electronic state. The observed LIF spectra could not be explained using the known parameters for the d<SUP>3</SUP><I>&pi;</I><SUB>g</SUB> electronic state. The parameters for the d<SUP>3</SUP><I>&pi;</I><SUB>g</SUB> state were redetermined through the reanalysis of the emission spectra for C<SUB>2</SUB> Swan system. The obtained parameters well explained the LIF spectra.
