An exposure method for realizing fine patterning on three-dimensional samples is described. Three-dimensional sample requires the different viewpoint from that of the proximity patterning. Concave areas can not be geometrically approached to the mask. The fine patterning becomes difficult due to the broadening of the exposure light. In this study, the phase shift mask is combined with the well-collimated mercury lamp. 5 μm-width line pattern is stably obtained on the 200 μm-deep cavity bottom.

In field of cardiovascular surgeries, palpation of aorta plays important roles in decision of surgical site.This paper develops palpation simulator of aorta based on a finite element based physical model.The proposed model calculates soft tissue deformation according to the affection of inner pressure and the operation of a surgeon.The proposed method is implemented on a prototype with dual PHANToM device.Experimental results confirmed our model achieves real time simulation of the surgical palpation.

Hall elements as mass production magnetic sensors are new application area for thin film technology such as vacuum deposition and MB E. Highly sensitive InSb thin film Hall elements formed by vacuum deposition are often applied as magnetic sensors for DC brushless motors used in electronic equipment. InAs Hall elements developed and produced by MBE have high sensitivity and stability over a wide temperature range and have potential for the present and future applications required by many electronic systems. Here, we review the recent status of application, production and the good characteristics of thin film Hall elements for use as magnetic sensors.

The experiment to detect the acoustic wave of an audible frequency region in air by a visible laser beam was carried out, showing that the audible waves with relatively long wavelength from 34 mm to 1700 mm could be directly detected by using a diode laser light of 670 nm and 6 mW. The frequency property was measured for each sound pressure from 75 dB to 100 dB and it is shown that the amplitude of output signal is linearly proportional to the sound frequency, which is consistent with the theoretical prediction. Furthermore, property of directivities in the planes vertical and parallel to the optical axis of laser beam propagation and the spatial profiles of the laser diffraction pattern for each incident angle of a sound wave were measured. The directivity property in the vertical plane for each frequency (200Hz to 10kHz) is very similar to each other and the full angle of half-maximum of directivity is about 120°. On the other hand, the directivity in the parallel plane for each frequency is different from each other. The directivity for low frequency is relatively broad. The full angle of half-maximum of directivity for 10 kHz is smallest and about 90°.

A new sensor to detect a smile of a person is proposed in this paper. When a person smiles, the shape of cheeks changes. The change is used for the detection of the smile. The sensor consists of a infrared LED, a photodiode and a few electronic parts. When the sensor detects a smile, at first infrared light is irradiated on a cheek. Then the sensor detects the smile by using the strength of light reflected from the cheek. As a result, the sensor is simple and can detect a smile.

Trials on transmission of olfactory information together with audio/visual information are currently being conducted in the field of multimedia. However, continuous emission of scents in high concentration creates problems of human adaptation and remnant odors in air.To overcome such problems we developed an olfactory display in conjunction with Canon Inc. This display has high emission control in the ink-jet so that it can provide stable pulse emission of scents. Humans catch a scent when they breathe in and inhale smell molecules in air. Therefore, it is important that the timing of scent presentation is synchronized with human breathing. We also developed a breath sensor which detects human inspiration.In this study, we combined the olfactory display with the breath sensor to make a pulse ejection presentation system synchronized the breath. The experimental evaluation showed that the system had more than 90 percent of detection rate. Another evaluation was held at KEIO TECHNO-MALL 2007. From questionnaire results of the participants, we found that the system made the user feel continuous sense of smell avoiding adaptation. It is expected that our system enables olfactory information to be synchronized with audio/visual information in arbitrary duration at any time.

This paper presents a support system for motion training for dances, sports, gestures, etc. In our previous study, we developed a prototype system for supporting motion training using motion caputure, i.e., marker tracking using a DV camera. The prototype system scores a user's motion by comparing tracking data of the user and a model with DP matching. The prototype system has a limit that it cannot accurately obtain acceleration of each part of the body because marker tracking using a DV camera cannot obtain three dimensional motion. By this limit, two different motions sometimes cannot be distinguished. For more effective motion training, in this study, we propose a system combining motion capture and acceleration sensors. We have examined the effectiveness of using acceleration sensors in motion training by comparing the proposed system with the prototype system. Experimental results have shown that two different motions can be more clearly distinguished by using the acceleration sensors.

Many kinds of chemical sensors have been developed to detect various air-pollutants. Generally sensor systems are composed of plural chemical sensors and a computer, and the systems can derive kinds of pollutants, densities of the pollutants, and various risks for environments and humans. Regarding the research of sensor systems, there are literatures about a sensor agent, which regards a sensor as an agent, and a utility mobile robot which attaches odor sensors. In these systems, it is necessary that observed results output by the sensors are exactly analyzed with information processing; especially, it is important to recognize the occurrence of events such as outbreaks of odor, however, this kind of recognitions are still not enough and it does not mean that the systems can recognize all the environmental events. In this research, odor sensors are treated and generally odor sensors are designed modeling functions of human nose. Hence, as well as odor sensors, we aim improving the accuracy of environmental recognitions using an odor sensor system attaching an information processing function according to human senses. In addition, we show the usefulness of the proposed system comparing with a conventional technique.

Semiconductor magnetodiode with very small size, which has similar operation-principle to the SMD (Sony magnetodiode), has been fabricated on a thin Si film of SOI substrate and its fundamental characteristics are evaluated. This magnetodiode is able to fabricate together with ICs such as amplifier, driving circuits, compensation circuits, etc. using the update semiconductor IC technologies on a Si chip. Double injection in this magnetodiode is confirmed, and the magnetic sensitivity of ΔI/I0∼=10% at H=1kOe is obtained in this double injection regime even under non-optimized conditions.
