We propose a Japanese font automatic creating system reflecting user's Kansei. In the system, a user inputs the impression of a font to create. Since a user does not have to do direct design work, a user without special design skill can easily obtain various fonts reflecting his/her Kansei. The proposed system operates based on the genetic algorithm. The genetic algorithm consists of two parts: a font creation part and a font evaluation part. By repetition of creation and evaluation, the system outputs a font which meets the demand of a user. In addition, by repetition of the genetic algorithm, various fonts are outputted. Furthermore, the system has the learning ability to reflect each user's Kansei. Through the experiment, we have confirmed the availability of the system, such as the diversity of created fonts and the satisfaction of each user.

Autonomous robots, which are becoming more widespread in Japanese homes and workplaces, perform such diverse functions as cleaning, or security patrolling. As people need to accept and understand these robots with which they may be in contact for extended periods, we studied Kansei in relation to the movements of robots. We observed the behavior of the people who participated in “a simulated workplace with robots experiment.”We developed six small simple robots of similar appearance but exhibited different behaviors in terms of their approaches to people; the combination of three types of movement and two types of wagging of the stick on the back. Each robot was evaluated on autonomism, Kansei, and affectiveness, anthropomorphism, safety and durability. According to the last evaluation after the session in three successive days, we concluded that approaching a person was interpreted as “cleverness”and wagging a “tail”as “charm.”The wag alone did not promote attachment but alleviated the aggression of the autonomous robot.

Manufacturers don't have the initiative, but it is the age when a users' community chooses a game. e-Sport develops in America, Europe, South Korea, Taiwan. Even Japan may be so. It may influence not only a market but also culture, education, international relations.

The civil construction in a particular community should be given a name that appropriately reflects the climate and culture of the area (expressed as “fudo”in Japanese) where they are constructed, which will add social and culturalvalue to it. From the view of Fudo Engineering, the namer may well be required to have all the knowledge of the fudo of the area, however, it is not easy to acquire the adequate knowledge. Here, we will propose to use our newly developed computerized consultation system, which uses an electronic encyclopedia, to get the fudo information effectively. When the user inputs a name of the place, this system searches all the descriptions about it from the encyclopedia. The descriptive text includes the nature environment, origin, history and so on. Then, it automatically extracts the nouns and the adjectives from the text, and makes a word list semantically related to the each extracted word. The word list helps the user choose a word or coin a new word conceptually related to the community as a name for the construction

Many goods and services at late night have appeared in the market. Therefore, the objective of this study was to clarify the characteristics of daily activity at late night of young people who were active at late night.<BR>The method of this study was to survey the daily activity of female student from 10p.m. to 5a.m. the next day on weekdays and holidays. The main results were as follows.<BR>(1) The difference among samples had stronger influence on the obtained data than the difference within samples.<BR>(2) The time of activities at late night was longer in students than in whole Japanese. On the rate of samples who were astir at late night, holidays was twice rate of weekdays.<BR>(3) The correlation of between bedtime and each item of daily activities for a whole day was high in the items of the free time, low in the items of the bound time and half in the indispensable time. The correlation between weekdays and holidays was also found.<BR>(4) Activities at late night were classified to five factors. The characteristics of each factor depended on the types of communication's media, for example, telephone and communication.<BR>(5) The activities, which were mostly active in late night, were telephone, computer and rest. Contrary, the items of low rate of activity at late night were work and transportation.<BR>(6) The correlations among activities were found. The character of samples related to transportation were clarified. Their character was self-assertive and aggressive.

This paper discusses about the relevancy of Solfege ability and Color-heard-sense. We do the questionnaire survey that listens to music and answered the color image. We analyze tonality recognition with questionnaire survey of the music major students and students except for the music major. We use method of the feature extraction of the music according to the adjective image chart, because it is superior than the feature extraction of the music by the factor analysis. From the analysis of the questionnaire survey, two results are shown. It is suggested that the human beings have the synesthesia subconsciously. It is shown that the synesthesia is caused by an influence on the common recognition of music and color.

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between humans and objects they treasure using the analogy of interpersonal relationships. Four hundred and eighteen undergraduates were asked to name objects they were especially fond of. They then rated the likeness or similarity of these things to themselves and others, and they specified the reason they liked the objects. The results showed that certain objects carried with them strong metaphors for the subjects' interpersonal relationships. The study also analyzed the relationship between these metaphors and the reasons given by the subjects for liking the objects named. Although this was an exploratory study, the analysis of the relationship between humans and the objects might be useful for the development of new products that people will treasure.

This paper demonstrated a relation between tempo of ‘Healing’ music and listener's ‘Healing’ evaluation. Some previous studies suggested that tempo is one of the most important factors in music. In present study, at first, we investigated tempo of ‘Healing’ music from the market, and analyzed acoustical property of them. Next, we made a simple sound from a result of the analysis, and we used it in the listening experiment. The subjects answered subjective ‘Healing’ impression of the sound stimuli, which were constructed from simple sounds in various tempi. According to the confirmation, the peak of the evaluation value was found at about 60 BPM (Beats Per Minute). Distribution of subjective ‘Healing’ evaluation resembled distribution of tempo values of ‘Healing’ music. There must be a tempo that fitsKANSEIand heals us, and such tempo is possible to be originated from heart rate in rest. Results of this study are useful for composition and choice of ‘Healing’ music.

Motivated by the recent Reinhardt's experiments for a therapeutic purpose that suggested the heartbeats of cancer patients were synchronized with music, we attempt to explore if the heartbeats of normal individuals are synchronized with music of decreasing tempo, and also its physiological effect. Based on the tool verifying synchronization between music and heartbeats, we found that the heartbeats of normal individuals are synchronized with tempo of our music stimulus. Furthermore, we suggest, in our experiment, that the synchronization affects autonomic nervous activity related to relaxation in physiological state.

People can enjoy Japanese traditional comic storytelling by both hearing the voice and watching the gesture of a teller. Some records of comic storytelling are available only by a voice record. If the animated motion for the talk is generated, we may enjoy storytelling more. We propose two methods to generate animation in accordance with a talk. One is a real time teaching; animation is generated at real time using a mouse. The other is a semiautomatic method; the timing for a new motion will be searched and the candidates of possible motion patterns are shown to an operator. The operator will choose a motion pattern fitted with the talk of a teller. Experimental results showed the effectiveness of these methods. The methods will be applicable to the development of animation fitted with voice or music data.

Colic crying, which is a baby's abnormal crying induced by unknown causes, is a typical example of sounds giving unpleasant impressions to listeners. Recently, Mukai et al. suggested that the colic crying would cause the child abuse because of its unpleasantness. In this paper, we propose the extended pitch perturbation quotient (ePPQ) for the evaluation of unpleasantness of crying. It is shown that the ePPQ is an index to quantify instability of fundamental periods, which seems to be cause of unpleasantness of colic crying. The ePPQ for colic crying is significantly higher than that for crying cured by operation. Furthermore, as a result of subjective evaluations, it seems that there is a tendency for the scale of unpleasantness to be high when the ePPQ is high. Therefore, it is considered that the ePPQ is a useful index for evaluating unpleasantness for crying.

Kansei is greatly affected by culture, customs, life-style and the other social factors. Therefore sociological studies are indispensable in order to explain functions of Kansei. In this paper we clarify four meanings of Kansei by analyzing the perceptive process of human beings and define Kansei which sociology deals with as the psychological ability to judge or evaluate intuitively sensory information or representation. And based on this, we clarify how the sociological approach to Kansei is possible by showing several methods for it (“sociology of sense”by Goerg Simmel, approach from artifacts, social studies of science and technology and studies of social meanings of concepts).

This paper describes a composition technique based on two methods, the information theory and the genetic algorithm. Recently, we have needed a new development of the composition technique from variety of our life style on the music, so that it is useful to obtain fundamental rules for the composition by using intelligent informatics technologies. The main idea of our technique consists of the following two parts. The entropy obtained from scores contributes the determination of melody, and the genetic algorithm so as to fit the melody performs the code progression.Two examples of composition results have been given to demonstrate the usefulness of our method.

As part of the process of automating the steps of clothing pattern design, this research studied methodologies for automatically setting human body measurement points using a 3-dimensional human body measurement device. The subjects of the research were young women. From among the measurement points for the neck and shoulders-which are crucial for clothing design but difficult to objectively set-the research focused on the neck side points and shoulder end points. In the setting algorithm, a setting hypothesis is derived by deriving a graphical relationship between the human body form and the measurement point positions set by conducting 3-dimensional measurement and directly touching the surface of the body. Furthermore, the adopted measurement point setting theory covers issues such as necessities involved in clothing design. The adequacy of the theory was determined by verifying the following: (1) There should be a statistical match between the coordinate values of directly set measurement points and theoretically set measurement points, (2) When upper body clothing pattern development drawings are created using, respectively, the directly set and theoretically set measurement points, the shape of those patterns should match, (3) When sensory testing is performed by persons experienced in clothing design using the created patterns, they should be judged appropriate in terms of clothing form. In the results, measurement points were set with a precision approximating directly set measurement points in all verification tests, and thus it was possible to demonstrate the adequacy of the algorithm.

In many cricket species, male crickets sing a specific song to call female crickets, and Japanese people have felt their songs tasteful and one of the seasonal scenes. This study investigated the relation between the songs and human mind and considered how people feel the songs. Three different species, Homoeogryllus japonicus, Teleogryllus emma and Oecanthus indicus, were used for this study, and the specific songs were statistically analyzed. When fluctuation pattern of the songs were analyzed, a 1/f mode was often seen at the range of low frequency regions of power-spectrum, suggesting that the songs are pleasant. Then, the impressions of the songs were investigated with SD-method, and the results of factor analysis showed that the songs gave pleasantness to people. Especially, people felt comfortableness to the sound and rhythm of H. japonicus and T. emma song. We finally conclude that these songs remember people some natural scene and gives a pleasantness.

This study focuses on the automation of a clothes pattern design. With two sorts of semi-fit jackets we manufactured five suits of every designs, changing the amount of waist darts distribution. To illustrate this, we performed sensory evaluation using the fixation photograph of a jacket with three-dimensional measurement of the manufactured jacket and a body. We have the following results by examining the result of evaluation by the difference in the amount of darts distribution, and the relation of a silhouette and cross-sectional shape was considered here. The quality of jacket silhouette that had a few amounts of front darts distribution, and had a lot in behind, as like the same tendency with waist darts in an adhesion cloths pattern to a human body, gains the support of a lot of people. As a result of quantifying the room that is generous between the body in said division grade, and a jacket as vacant space distance and a vacant space area, the darts distribution brings about the change of silhouette.Mal-distribution of front and behind vacant space distance which appeared in a sectional view in WL. Made the relationship between a pattern and the amount of organic functions clear. These outcomes say that we could get a clue to create a cross-sectional drawing that is necessary for a cloths pattern design, from the three-dimensional measurement data of human body directly.
