As part of the process of automating the steps of clothing pattern design, this research studied methodologies for automatically setting human body measurement points using a 3-dimensional human body measurement device. The subjects of the research were young women. From among the measurement points for the neck and shoulders-which are crucial for clothing design but difficult to objectively set-the research focused on the neck side points and shoulder end points. In the setting algorithm, a setting hypothesis is derived by deriving a graphical relationship between the human body form and the measurement point positions set by conducting 3-dimensional measurement and directly touching the surface of the body. Furthermore, the adopted measurement point setting theory covers issues such as necessities involved in clothing design. The adequacy of the theory was determined by verifying the following: (1) There should be a statistical match between the coordinate values of directly set measurement points and theoretically set measurement points, (2) When upper body clothing pattern development drawings are created using, respectively, the directly set and theoretically set measurement points, the shape of those patterns should match, (3) When sensory testing is performed by persons experienced in clothing design using the created patterns, they should be judged appropriate in terms of clothing form. In the results, measurement points were set with a precision approximating directly set measurement points in all verification tests, and thus it was possible to demonstrate the adequacy of the algorithm.
