In response to recent social phenomenon of adolescents reporting increasingly higher levels of anger, a new construct "assumed-competence" is proposed in this study.The purpose of Study 1 is to formulate an instrument to measure individual differences in assumed-competence and to examine the construct validity of the scale by comparing it with self-esteem in relation to past experiences. Four scales designed to measure assumed-competence, past experiences, self-esteem, and narcissistic-competence were administered to 393 university students. The ACS (Assumed-Competence Scale) consisting of 11 items showed high reliability. The ACS showed no significant relationship to self-esteem, but was positively related to narcissistic-competence. Self-esteem was positively correlated with positive experiences and assumed-competence was also positively correlated with negative experiences.Study 2 aimed at investigating the relationship between assumed-competence and anger measured using Spielberger's STAXI. Results suggested that individuals with high assumed-competence had higher trait anger than those with low assumed-competence. However, self-esteem inhibited the expression of anger.

本研究の目的は, 共感性の多次元的アプローチに従い, 他者の心理状態に対する認知と情動の反応傾向をそれぞれ他者指向性-自己指向性という視点から弁別的に測定しうる多次元共感性尺度 (MES) を作成し, その信頼性と妥当性を検証することであった。先行研究における概念定義の議論および既存尺度の構成を概観し,「他者指向的反応」「自己指向的反応」「被影響性」「視点取得」「想像性」の5つの下位概念を設定した。これらを測定する項目を作成し, 質問紙調査を実施した。大学生871名から得られた回答について因子分析を行った結果, 5つの下位概念に対応する5因子が得られた。α係数, I-T相関係数, 再検査信頼性係数などの結果から信頼性を検討した。また, 既存の共感性尺度および共感性との関連が予想される概念を測定する尺度との相関から妥当性を検討した。今後, 自我発達との関連など認知・情動反応傾向の指向性を規定している要因の検討を進めることが, 共感性に関する応用研究において有益と考えられる。

The purpose of the present study was to investigate Japanese anger expression styles and their influence on interpersonal relationships. In the initial study, 239 undergraduates were asked to complete a questionnaire which assessed seven distinct anger expression styles. The results indicated that the participants most often employed three anger expression styles including hyojo-kucho (nonverbal), tohmawashi (implicit), and itsumodori (none). In the second study, 162 undergraduates were asked to watch these three anger expression styles portrayed on videotape. Participants rated the degree to which the actor in the videotape felt angry and their impressions toward male or female actors in either higher, lower, or equal status, same-sex situations. The findings indicated that the effect on interpersonal relationships varied across the three different expression styles. This study has important implications for understanding Japanese anger expression in interpersonal, and perhaps cross-cultural, relationships.

本研究は,ウェルビーイングの検討において共感性を考慮する重要性に着目し,特に共感性の感情的側面である共感反応の他者指向性―自己指向性の違いに焦点を当ててウェルビーイングにおける差異を検討した。大学生210名を対象とした相関分析の結果から,他者指向的な共感反応傾向および社会的スキルの高い者ほど日常生活や対人関係で満足している一方,自己指向的な共感反応傾向が高く社会的スキルの低い者ほどディストレスの多い傾向が明らかとなった。また,他者/自己指向的な共感反応および社会的スキルにより分析対象者を4クラスタに分類し,ウェルビーイングの差異を検討した分散分析では,他者指向的な共感反応傾向が高く,自己指向的な共感反応傾向が低く,社会的スキルの高いクラスタのウェルビーイングが良好であった。これらにより,自身のウェルビーイングを維持するためには,社会的スキルが高いというだけでなく,他者指向的に共感すると共に自己指向的に共感しない重要性が示された。

Four hundred and eighteen undergraduates were asked to name objects they were especially fond of. They then rated the likeness or similarity of these things to themselves and others, and they specified the reason they liked the objects. The results showed that certain objects carried with them strong metaphors for the subjects' interpersonal relationships. The study also analyzed the relationship between these metaphors and the reasons given by the subjects for liking the objects named. Although this was an exploratory study, the analysis of the relationship between humans and the objects might be useful for the development of new products that people will treasure.

The first purpose of this study was to investigate Japanese adults' evaluations of appropriateness and effectiveness of anger expression strategies. The second purpose was to investigate the effects of their evaluations and interpersonal goals (i. e., relationship and communication) on the likelihood of using each anger expression strategy. Two hundred and nineteen undergraduates were asked to read a vignette in which a person displayed anger using various anger expression strategies toward either a superior, an equal, or a subordinate whose behavior evoked the anger. The participants were then asked to evaluate each anger expression strategy for its appropriateness and effectiveness. They were also asked to identify themselves as the angry person in the vignette and to rate the intensity of their own anger, the importance of interpersonal goals, and the likelihood of using each anger expression strategy. Findings suggested that pointing out the target person's faults calmly was reported to be a competent anger expression strategy especially when superiors expressed their anger. Regression analyses revealed that the cognitive evaluation of appropriateness of each expression strategy influenced the likelihood of using the strategy.

A new construct "Assumed-Competence based on undervaluing others (AC is short for the construct)" was proposed to explain adolescents' behaviors in these days. AC was defined as the habitual feeling of competence that would be followed by one's criticizing or undervaluing others regardless of how much he/she had directly positive or negative experiences. To measure the individual differences of AC, the assumed-competence scale (ACS is short for the scale) consisting of 11 items was constructed. The purpose of this study was to examine the construct validity of ACS by showing the relations with several psychological constructs which have logical associations with AC. In the meanwhile, self-esteem (SE is short for it) mean true competence based on really positive and negative experiences. That is, SE could be clearly discriminated from AC. Thus, to make clear discriminating validity of ACS, SE was measured as well as AC when the relations with other psychologicl constructs were investigated. Seven psychological constructs we used here as criteria of validity were (1)locus of control, (2)public and private self-awareness, (3)loneliness, (4)sympathy, (5)emotion of anger. (6)pleasure and displeasure experiences (during lately three months) and (7)life satisfaction. Participants were 124 junior college students, 258 university students and 11 graduate students. Correlation coefficients between AC,SE and seven psychological constructs were calculated. The results were interpreted by focusing only significant correlations. Concerning self, although SE was related positively to internal control, AC was not, whereas positive relation between ACS and private self-awareness was shown. Next, regarding with interpersonal relationship, AS had positive relations to loneliness, that is, the persons whose AS are high thought that human could not understand each other and they were strongly aware of individuality. Also negative correlation was presented between AC and sympathy. In the meantime, SE had no relation to the variables of interpersonal relationships. In tern, emotion as a criterion of validity was examined. AC was related positively with trait-anger, expression of anger and displeasure experiences in academic and friendship situations. Furthermore, AC had negative relation to life satisfaction. On the contrary, SE was correlated positively with pleasure experiences and life satisfaction. Based on the results mentioned above, we judged ACS to have construct validity to some extent. Finally we suggested the possibility of classification of AC in the relation with SE.

The purpose of this study was to explore 1) the meanings included in gifts, 2) the anticipation on the part of the giver of how the gifts would be treated, and 3) the relationship between these two things. One hundred and eighty-nine undergraduates were asked to nominate an example of a gift in three different situations: a celebration gift of entrance to university, a birthday gift, and an offering at a funeral. In order to identify the meanings of the gifts, each gift was rated in terms of the quality, practical use, emotional value, and representation of both giver and recipient. Participants also rated the anticipation on the part of the giver of how the gifts would be treated. The results showed that the gifts and their meanings were different among the three situations. The study also clarified that the pattern of relationships between meanings of gifts and anticipation of the treatment of gifts were different among the situations. In addition, it was suggested that quality, practical use, emotional value, and recipients' representation promoted their attachment to the gifts in at least one of the situations. Other results were also discussed from the context of gift giving situations.

ヒトがモノに重ねるイメージと、愛着形成に必要なモノの要素を重点的に検討した。別のヒトとのコミュニケーションに用いるモノのイメージ贈り物:贈り物選択時に贈り主はモノへの価値づけ(客観的価値、実用的価値、感情的価値、他者表現性)を行っており、それらが贈ったモノへの愛着につながると期待していることがわかった。メディア:職場の対人関係とお詫びを伝える際の各種メディアのイメージを、送信者と受信者の両方の視点から検討した。その結果、心理的負荷や上下関係に関わらず、気持ちを伝えるために対面が最も適切であり、目上に対して携帯メールは礼儀正しくないと判断された。一方、同輩や目下に対しては電話(速い)や電子メール(正確)も容認されていることがわかった。ヒトとヒトでないモノとのやりとりについて道具:むだ時間系に対するヒトの運動適応について検討した。その結果、短期の運動学習スケジュールでは、制御成績には顕著な改善が見られなかったものの、操作者の運動意識には正の効果が惹起されることが明らかとなった。ロボット:人型二足歩行ロボットでは、ヒトへの接近行動が、ロボットを主体性を持つモノと認識させ、ヒトと協調して仕事を行う役割を期待させることが示された。より単純な、車輪移動と胴体後部の棒を振る機能だけをもつロボットでは、ロボットを擬人化・擬生物化する傾向がより顕著で、ヒトに「ついてくる」「しっぽを振る」ことが愛着に重要であるとともに、自律ロボットへの恐怖感や違和感が「しっぽ」により大きく緩和されることがわかった。快適性評価技法の開発感性評価の軸となる快適性を脳活動から評価する技法を検討した。脳波α波の周期ゆらぎによる快適性推定技術を検証し拡張するために、心地よさを伴う入眠に着目して、入眠潜時とゆらぎ係数との関係を検討した。その結果、左前側頭部のゆらぎ係数から入眠潜時を推定可能なことが示唆された。
