The purpose of this paper is to sociologically examine the caring culture in free schools. In previous studies, free schools have been recognized as self-help groups for school non-attendees to reconstruct their negative self-narrative to an active one, a place where they can change the meaning of school refusal. Free school supporters are seen as significant others who help non-attendees in realizing these changes. But in fact the supporters do not just engage in such a narrative therapeutic care, but also conduct passing-care that avoids narrative construction. This paper suggests that these contrastive approaches to care are achieved by the cultural factor of the secret and the factor can cause the group to hold other people than school non-attendees.

A questionnaire survey and analysis was conducted for 133 women's college students to clarify the current Japanese young generation's acceptability towards foreign people. The Social Distance Scale was made and used In the survey. As a result, young Japanese are willing to accept foreigners according to their social situation (e.g. teacher-student relationship) or their interest in a progressive society, and according not to nationality, race and physical appearance. However, those who tend to show their conservativeness still remain pro-Western.

This paper examines the function of kin relationship, and in particular, where they relate to self-help activities progressing in poor urban areas of Manila. The residents utilize extended kin relationship in their daily lives, especially when involving themselves in the distribution of social resources which have been brought about through self-help activities. The people who use their kinship ties effectively can achieve a more favorable or higher social status for themselves and their kin groups. Therefore this paper also examines the social meaning of self-help activities as the origin of the societal heirarchy of power and rather than material wealth or resources.

This paper explores the concept of "ethnic contact" used by a Japanese sociologist Eizo Koyama (1899–1983) to analyze three types of travel/displacement: immigration, tourism and fieldwork. Since the early 20<sup>th</sup> century, many fieldworkers had begun to authorize their own inter-cultural practices in contrast to other ones by tourists and immigrants, etc. But Koyama claimed that tourism involved the meaning of fieldwork as well as one of leisure activity. Why is it? By reconsidering his claim under the Japanese tourism policy in the 1930–<br>40s, I argue that it reflected the process in which tourists were perceived as agency mediating between different cultures while ethnic contact became an efficient medium for (re-)presenting national self-image. I also argue that his population policy attempted empire building through the media of contact between Japanese immigrants and natives in the colonies.

The aim of this paper is to analyze face-to-face interactions between members of sexual minorities and members from the sexual majority (heterosexuals) and to examine the possibilities of a better understanding between the two. To accomplish this, two types of qualitative research were conducted. The first consisted of interviews with LGBs, and the second took the form of participatory field-work in a self-help group, where both sexual minorities and heterosexuals were members. It was found that heterosexuals became a sexual minority at the club while sexual minorities became a majority. Heterosexuals in the club expressed their feelings about difficulties in Japan, which melts the line between minorities and the majority. This transposition of sexualities introduced heterosexuals to the pseudo-experience of being members of a minority and, at the same time, the club gave sexual minorities the chance to imagine friendly relations with heterosexuals near them but outside the group.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the struggles in the physical examination for conscription between draft dodgers and Japanese army surgeons. The draft dodgers tried to escape from conscription by asserting that they were not sufficiently fit to be a solder. They injured themselves or told false stories about their health situation. The army surgeons tried to recognize draft dodgers. Examination of the documents written by the doctors shows that it was not easy to recognize draft dodgers and surgeons had to face many problems. This suggests that there would have been a number of draft dodgers who in escaping conscription and that the government could not completely control people in Japan.

In this paper I have made a comparative research of the social background and trends that support Japan-South Korea student's friendship. It turns out that both national groups were generally satisfied with their friendship although there was a difference in the process of mingling with their friends. In case of associating with friends, Japanese students tended to value the feeling side, while South Korea students tended to value their attributes and their shrewdness. In the process of forming friends, analysis showed that both national groups were influenced by their degree of school adjustment and their quality of family life, while school achievement (Japanese students) and an item that asked about Internet friends (South Korean students) had a passive effect.

Recently the role of "media frames" in the process of making news has become a focus of attention. According to Gitlin (1980), <i>media frames are persistent patterns of cognition, interpretation, and presentation, of selection, emphasis, and exclusion</i>. It is important for us as audience to recognize not only that the news is not "<i>a mirror of society</i>" but also that the news is made through media frames. Besides, we must examine what the media frames are. In this paper, I intend to define and characterize the nature and function of media frames by analyzing the news on "All Five Walks" in the Summer High School Baseball Tournament in 1992.

In 1977, Malcom Spector and John I. Kitsuse proposed for the study of the social problems focus on the activities of participants, which is well-known as “claims-making activities”. They also contended that social problems are to be conceived of as a topic for the sociological study in themselves. Although the focus on the activities is a significant proposal, with respect of the latter point, however, their proposal taken literally tends to deflecting attention from social problems as such. My contention is that what is lacking and what is needed is some clear notion of the relation between studying the activities of participants and the study of social problems as such. In addition, I tentatively sketch one possible notion of such relations.

The purpose of this paper is to elucidate one aspect of the scholastic socialization. This is the socialization through which Kindergartners are oriented to the methodology of 'A and Bs attending to the same thing' as a scholastic skill. This paper demonstrates that two respective designs of two interaction formats, 'adjacency pair' and 'adjacency triple', are used to cohort the kindergartners, make the teacher's and kindergartners' states facing each other, and then, achieve the methodology of 'A and Bs attending to the same thing'. These procedures are describable as one aspect of the scholastic socialization that orients kindergartners to a skill mainly required in schools.

By concentrating on the process of making something by hand, this paper considers what kind of value handmade "charm-goods" had for girls in Japan's 1980s boom of "fortune-telling & charm." It has been said that "charm-goods" in the 1980s "magic-religious popular culture" gave girls their own sense of identity with a world-view that was worthy of them, but with "charm-goods" the fact that they were made by hand has been regarded as being important. This second element seems to have demanded from girls a more active commitment to "fortune-telling and charm." Through analyzing the articles of "My Birthday," which is well known as a representative "fortune-telling & charm" magazine for girls, I clarify that "charm-goods" and their being made by hand helped girls to get involved in and improve their real-life communication skills.

This article clarifies the relationships between three academic disciplines through a text mining analysis of journals of sociology, the sociology of education, and pedagogy. Through analyses of word frequency and the extent of the similarity among these journals, results reveal that these three disciplines are different in complicated and multi-dimensional ways in terms of their viewpoints and concepts. This article proposes the concept of content-related differentiation for these disciplines.

It seems that social scientists somehow understand their papers despite the fact that it is impossible to decide “clear” relation between them and what is called methodological criteria. Accordingly, in this paper, theory is addressed not as something to be improved, but as phenomena embedded in our work of writing and reading within those situations where they are done. Two features -‘sign reading practice’ and ‘impression of rationality’- are examined as ways to achieve making sense of [purported] SCIENCE. It is concluded that theorizing activities are never isolated from our everyday work.

This paper considers differentiated scientific disciplines using the concept of functional differentiation. According to social systems theory, society has evolved to a state in which it consists of a variety of large communication systems that can be identified by the functions they perform. The goal of this paper is to show that science is structured in the same way. Modern science is characterized by functional differentiation.

From the mid 1990s, a new form of fashion has occupied part of the urban space of Japan: “street fashion”. What are the patterns of organization and communication in the urban space formed by “street fashion”? This paper attempts to examine “Ura-Harajuku”, the center of post 1980s' fashion in Tokyo, applying a dramaturgical approach. After that, the range of the approach itself and its limits are considered.

This paper aims to clarify the causal relationship between Chinese migrants' education and their income in Japan. I focus on the comparison between educational attainment in China and that in Japan. The result of my research shows that educational credentials obtained in Japan have a significant effect on the income of Chinese migrants and that there is a significant mutual relation between their Chinese and Japanese educational credentials in terms of income determination.

The purpose of this paper is to examine how the so-called "Liberal" position arose concerning the issue of ethnic minorities in 1960s America. Some earlier research has seen "Liberal" as only the opposition to "Conservative", and explained that the "Liberal" position in America was established in the presidential election of 1964 in which the main issue was civil rights policy. According to such research, as the civil rights movement became radical in the late 1960s, the "Liberal" began to collapse. But in this paper, to grasp the "Liberal" more appropriately, I focus on the relation and difference between "majority" and "minority" inside the "Liberal", and examine how "Liberals in the majority" responded to claims of minority. From this perspective, I will make it clear the radicalization of civil rights movement was not the beginning of the collapse of the "Liberal" but rather the critical momentum for the establishment of "Liberals in the majority", as it were a "Liberal Majority".

This paper explores the development of common sense knowledge about stuttering correction. IZAWA Shuji (1851-1917) established the Rakuseki-Sha, one of the original organizations for stuttering correction in Japan. He was an advocator of “Japanese” education in the colonial government. His work on speech correction in Japan was a continuation of his research on “Japanese” education for language integration. His stuttering correction was not, however, a continuation of his “Japanese” education but was instead practice based on the scientific method (“Shiwa-Hou”). This paper shows that his speech correction was the application of practical ‘Knowledge’ about normal speech.
