The surfaces of roll material were dulled by Nd-YAG laser machining under some conditions of focal length cooling and number of beams for laser irradiation, and the rolling and sliding wear experiments were made in order to investigate the wear resistance of crater rims formed on the dulled surfaces. Then, the effects of distances from a focusing lens to a roll material, cooling conditions of air and water and combined irradiation of 2 beams on the wear resistance of crater rims were clarified. As a result, it has been found that the condition of 1 beam irradiation, water cooling and appropriate focal length is the best for the wear resistance of crater rims in the present series of experimental conditions.

In this paper, we present a method to obtain the depth of the building using a satellite image of Google Earth and GPS receiver. Maps with 3D information are useful for robot navigation. This method is based on "3D Street View", which is a 3D model of the building automatically created with laser range finder and fish eye lens camera.

<p>Vehicle performance tests are conducted to evaluate factors of vehicle performance such as fuel consumption and durability. Robotic drivers are often used in these tests to ensure that performance evaluate is reproducible. When the driver selects the gear ratio in Manual transmission, speed control performance is degraded during changing gear, because a torque transmission between the engine and wheels is cut during this sequence. In this paper, we realized the driving while considering shift changes by the robotic driver. First, we modeled the lack of a driving force. We then derived a target vehicle speed waveform using the lack of a driving force model. Finally, we performed vehicle tests using a robotic driver. We confirmed that the proposed system was effective based on the results of actual vehicle tests.</p>

A hybrid rocket with new engine that had developed by students themselves was launched at 13:55 (JST) on 13th March 2005 at the Taiki-cho launch site, Hokkaido and the experiment was mostly successful. The rocket is 2.1m long, 10.2cm in diameter and 7.1kg in weight. Including payload instruments were non-gunpowder separation mechanism, telemeter, 3-axial accelerometer, altimeter, timer, flight computer and movie camera. Recovery parachute opened at 400m high and rocket system was safely recovered after 56 seconds after the launch. The new fuel of the engine was composed by microcrystalline wax and nitrous oxide which is safely and has high combustion efficiency. The wind direction and velocity were able to measure above 365m high from the ground, and student-tracking team tracked the rocket during the flight. In this paper, we report a result for rocket launches and our experimental experiences of rocket making and the management.

This research is universal design for electric kettle of the usability and safety. It analyze the position of the gravity and knob for electric kettle, and discover the problem in fuman engineering of a current products. The relation of product and human is chenge like same to the age change. A lot of products what shoul be the review for the relation to the most important body when the tool is used like an electric kettle exist in all place. If an appropriate relation of the thing can keep being created always, The original role of the products "It is improved the quality of the life of man" might be demonstrated enough.

<p>The trap-jaw ant genus <i>Odontomachus</i> closes her mandible to catch prey quite quickly. The purpose of this study is to examine the mechanism how such a fast movement is realized. Since the velocity of closing exceeds the contraction velocity of a muscle, it is considered that there will be a mechanism to store energy and release it at once for realization of high-speed motion in the exoskeleton. We prepare a scale model of Odontomachus with micro CT scanning their exoskeleton data and 3D printer. Using model, we find three regions of contact points of the temporomandibular joint and the exoskeletal part meshes with each other at one of the regions. This structure is considered to be related to a lock mechanism for fast movement of Odontomachus.</p>

This paper proposes a small, lightweight, and easily-relocated sensor terminal named "Portable" for acquiring a variety of environmental information. The Portable is equipped with a variety of sensors including a pyroelectric sensor, a proximity sensor, a sound pressure sensor, a thermometer, a hygrometer, a gas sensor, a flame sensor, and a laser range finder. We introduce three typical applications: abnormality detection, pedestrian tracking and automatic reconfiguration of several Portables for pedestrian tracking.

In this study, we demonstrate the small droplet transportation on vertical parallel electrodes using electrowetting and the interfacial oscillation. The transportation of water droplets, which can be applied to the droplet-based biochemical devices, is performed by applying ac voltage that ranges from 0 to 100 Vpp and from 20 to 100 Hz. The characteristic of the transportation is observed by the use of a high speed camera, and the effects of the interfacial oscillation and the dynamical contact angle on the droplet motion are investigated in detail. The experimental results show that the vertical velocity of the droplet can be controlled by changing the amplitude and frequency of applied ac voltage. In addition, the dynamics of the droplet is estimated theoretically considering the interfacial tension force due to the dynamical contact angle and the gravitational force. The predicted force and displacement of the droplet agree well with the experimental values obtained from the high speed observation of the droplet motion.

When heat-transfer tube failure occurred in SG of LMFBR and the steam leak rate is medium (some 10s g/s-some kg/s), overheating tube rupture would be caused due to the accelerated high-temperature creep in the heat transfer tubes surrounded by the high temperature products of sodium-water reaction (SWR). However, the detailed analysis code to analyze this phenomenon is not established. Adopting a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code would be a promising candidate for that perpose. At first in developing the analysis tool using a CFD code, STAR-CCM+ and LHM (Locally Homogeneous Multi-phase) model was adapted considering the appropriateness to SWR and the merits of homogeneous model, that is, the light load of computing resources and the minimum usage of models whose applicability is remained in argument. In the second step, a concept of interfacial area density was introduced to the submerged jet analysis. Furthermore, a sodium-water reaction model was added as an external function of the CDF code. A trial calculation was made to the basic SWR experimental data obtained by Hobbes et al. The analysis of the temperature profile formed in the jet region showed a good agreement with the experiment by properly choosing parameters such as Lewis number and the heat transfer coefficient on the sodium droplet. No marked difference was seen between the two-dimensional analysis and the three-dimensional analysis.

<p>A good understanding of the handovers between humans is critical for the development of robots in the service industry. In this work, we analyzed the human handover motion to determine to what extent they adapt their handovers to individual partners and whether they can predict the handover positions of a partner. To analyze this issue, motivated by motor control studies, we analyzed handovers by humans in the absence of visual feedback. Our results show that humans have the surprising ability to modulate their handover location according to partners they have just met, and their distance from the partner. The resulting handover errors are relatively small, suggesting that they can predict each other's handover behavior.</p>

The authors develop a small and simple steam-reforming reactor in a home-use size for n-dodecane as a heavy-hydrocarbons fuel. Under such a well-controlled condition by a thermal diffuser as the reactor satisfies two target-temperature criteria, the authors measure the inside-temperature profile and the hydrogen molar fraction (concentration) CH2, together with the molar fractions CCH4, CCO and CCO2 of other main gas components such as CH4, CO and CO2, respectively, using a gas chromatograph. In addition, the authors conduct theoretical calculations based on the thermal-equilibrium theory, and reveal CH2, CCH4, CCO and CCO2, as well as experiments. As a result, the authors successfully achieve suitable inside-temperature profiles. The steam-reforming reaction becomes more active at the position where temperature T > 800 K. The effects of the steam-to-carbon molar ratio S/C upon CH2, CCH4, CCO and CCO2 are shown, experimentally and theoretically. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical ones. Besides, carbon balance and conversion ratio show high accuracy in experiments.

It is necessary to examine what kind of vibration and swinging is comfortable, in order to develop the comfortable human-machine interface using vibration or swinging. This study is focusing on the fluctuation in the period on the rhythm produced by the human; especially the stroke interval of the air stick is examined. The air stick is a simple version of the devil stick which is a kind of street performance. First, the portable measuring system of the stroke interval is developed by sticking two strain gauges on each hand stick and putting a wired battery driven strain amplifier and a portable data recorder in a knapsack which the performer wears. Then, the fluctuation is measured and the power spectrum is examined. As the result, it is clarified that the power spectrum shows the downward-sloping tendency in the low frequency range, and it shows the relation of about 1/f averagely.
