This paper proposes a hierarchical model which is composed of a slow feature analysis (SFA) network to extract multi-modal representation of a humanoid robot. The experiment with humanoid robot shows that the network can integrate multi-modal information and detect semantic features by the extraction of the slowly varying features from the high-dimensional input sensory signal, and it shows that the multi-modal representation is useful as state representation for reinforcement learning compared with using state representation without the integration of the multi-modal information.

In recent years, the number of patients with low back pain has increased, and it is a problem in various aspects such as health and economics. It is caused by a mechanical load acting on the muscles and the spine in the lumbar part. To reduce the risk of back pain, a support wear that reduces the load on the lumbar spine during flexion has been suggested by our group. This paper presents a dynamic model to calculate the load on the lumbar vertebrae. Especially, ligament tension considering Flexion Relaxation Phenomenon (FRP) which has not been considered so far and intra-abdominal pressure using two dimensional image information were modeled. First, the degree of FRP was measured from the myoelectric potential information of the back muscle in different bending postures. Next, we modeled the ligament tension using the results. Finally, the intra-abdominal pressure was incorporated into the model to calculate the compression force of the lumbar spine, and the experiment to estimate the lumbar load was performed. As a result, the experiment show that the load of the lumbar spine increases markedly due to FRP and this model is effective in calculation of the lumbar load compared to results of actual measurements of internal pressure.

Recently, we have been demanding products that satisfy personal tastes. In these days, it is extremely important to make a human sensibility model and then build up a technology system for applying human sensibility to various fields in engineering. In this paper, a human sensibility model for musical chords is studied. The model that uses an artificial neural network is constructed by ccnsidering the structure of a cochlea that analyzes sounds into frequency. The musical chords that are composed of three or more musical tones are inputted into the neural network, and a set of the sensibility information that characterizes "cheerfulness-gloominess", "thickness-thinness" and "stability instability" is outputted. After training the model, the following results that agree with the knowledge of psychology and physiology are proved. 1) Some hidden units for "cheerfulness- gloominess" and "stability instability" are influenced by the critical bandwidth of musical tone frequency, and furthermore they have "Tonality". 2) For "thickness thinness", there is a unit that distinguishes musical tones by frequency.

Differential form is an alternative mathematical form to describe the field variables and the operators in electromagnetism. From the viewpoint of differential forms, discretization of electromagnetic field is divided into two steps, i) discretization of the exterior derivative operator (Maxwell’s equations), and ii) discretization of the Hodge star operator (constitutive equations). The first step, the discrete form of the Maxwell’s equations based on differential forms has been obtained by other researchers. In contrast, the discrete Hodge star operators (discrete constitutive equations) have not been obtained so far. In the previous studies, unsigned diagonal discrete Hodge star operators are defined using the unsigned area and length for circumcenter dual meshes, however, it does not lead to correct solution of partial differential equations in the general Delaunay meshes. In this paper, we propose a definition of the signed diagonal discrete Hodge star using the signed area and length operator for circumcenter dual meshes. Also, based on this definition, we propose a simple practical calculation method for the signed discrete Hodge star operators. The result of convergence experiment indicates that the signed diagonal Hodge star operators produce the correct numerical solution for the general Delaunay meshes. Therefore, this definition and calculation method for the signed discrete Hodge star operator provides us with the explicit dynamics formulation for finite element analysis of electromagnetic field.

Indirect laser peening is a new laser peening technique and modifies the mechanical properties of the surface of the substrate. Metal sheet protects the substrate surface from heat affect by a plasma with laser irradiation. Because the metal sheet absorbs laser energy and reduces the peening efficiency, the features of indirect laser peening for several aluminum alloys were investigated in this study. The changes of mechanical properties by indirect laser peening were discussed by the comparison to the mechanical properties of as-received state.

This paper is concerned with a human interface between a human operator for decision-making of obstacle avoidance and a crane transferring an object. A semi-automatic control system is proposed in terms of a diffusion equation strategy in order to check and revise the reference trajectory directed by human operator for obstacle avoidance. Moreover, this system includes an optimal servo controller to suppress the sway of the transfer object and to control the cart velocity. The usefulness of the proposed method is demonstrated through experimental studies.

Grease lubrication in ball bearings is one of key technologies to reduce energy consumption and enhance lifetime in design of spacecrafts as well as general industrial machineries. From a view point of grease lubrication design, it is crucial to understand grease macro flow phenomena in ball bearings taking into account non-Newtonian property of grease. In the current study, grease macro flow phenomena were investigated based on experimental and numerical works as a preliminary study. Grease dam breaking was defined as a benchmark problem and its collapsing phenomena were experimentally observed. As for the numerical work, a basic algorithm to simulate non-Newtonian grease macro flows was developed based on the explicit MPS (Moving Particle Simulation) method coupled with Bingham pseudoplastic fluid model. The observed grease dam breaking behavior was simulated by the developed numerical approach and the numerical results showed a good agreement with the corresponding experimental data.

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are useful systems because they operate at lower temperatures than other types of fuel cells. This characteristic causes water management issues. To elucidate effects of water on PEMFC performance, we developed a temperature sensor using micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) techniques. This sensor was placed between the catalyst layer (CL) and the microporous layer (MPL) at the cathode. Slight effects on total cell performance were observed with the insertion of the sensor. This sensor can be applicable to typical PEMFCs without any special equipment such as a transparent separator. In-situ measurement with a temperature sensor showed that the maximum temperature rise at the cathode CL (CCL) was about 9 ℃ at 1.1 A/cm^2. The temperature sensor also showed temperature gradients between the ribs and channels. In addition, we developed a capacitance-type humidity sensor and inserted it in the channel. In-situ measurement with a humidity sensor showed a relative humidity (RH) change in the channel.

With in this research the authors analyzed 127 traffic accident cases originating from tire bursts (blow-outs). These accidents occurred on the expressways of Gifu Pref. with in the past five years (1999-2003). Items investigated included the temperature at the time of the accident, the burst tire position and the vehicle behavior immediately after the tire burst. The results shown indicate; (1) many burst accidents occur in the high summer temperatures, (2) burst accidents usually involve passenger cars, (3) there are many accidents on fair weather days, (4) frequent accidents occur with in the temperature range of 20℃ to 25℃, (5) the number of accidents most frequently occur at a traveling speed of about 100km/h, (6) front wheel burst accidents make up more than half of the total accidents.

次世代スーパーコンピュータ開発プロジェクトは2006年1月から理化学研究所で開始した。そのターゲットとして2011年度末に10PetaFLOPSの世界最速規模のスーパーコンピュータを開発することの他に、ナノサイエンスとライフサイエンスの二つの応用分野での研究開発がグランドチャレンジとして設定されている。理化学研究所は2006年8月にこのライフサイエンスのグランドチャレンジの拠点に選定され、10月から研究開発に取りかかっている。ここでは、その概要について紹介する。この取り組みは次世代生命体統合シミュレーションの研究開発と呼んでおり、分子・細胞・臓器/全身の三つのスケールで、方程式に基づくシミュレーションに関する研究開発と、大量のデータから未知の法則に迫るデータ解析融合の二つのアプローチで、生命現象の統合的理解と健康科学への貢献を目標としている。同時に、高性能計算のチームがソフトウェアの高度化・高性能化を図り、応用ソフトで次世代スーパーコンピュータの性能を極限まで引き出すことを目指している。2008年10月からは脳神経系チームが加わり、さらに充実を図っており、2011年度からの次世代スーパーコンピュータの稼働にあわせて、その性能を生かした画期的な成果を出すことを目指している。

Bending modulus of elasticity of the composite material from bagasse fiber (remains after sugar cane squeezed) and biodegradable resin was investigated in view of the content of bagasse fiber and the fiber length. The result was validated by short fiber strengthen theory. The result is as followings. Bending modulus of elasticity increased with increasing the content of bagasse fiber. The increase of Bending modulus of elasticity is predicted by short-fiber strengthen theory incorporated with the compression ratio of bagasse fiber, which has honeycomb structure in the cross section, was compressed in press forming, makes good agreement with the experimental result. Bending modulus of elasticity decreased when the fiber length of bagasse is under 3 mm (aspect ratio=12). This result makes good accordance with the prediction value by the short fiber strengthen theory.

An atmospheric low temperature plasma flow using a coaxial cable for microwave transmission has been applied to sterilize Escherichia coli to investigate the relationship between gas temperature and sterilization rates. The plasma source mainly consists of a cavity, a quartz discharge tube, a coaxial cable, a microwave power source and a gas supply system. The sterilization rate shows 100% in the center region of plasma exposure when the exposure temperature is 333K. The rate is decreased in the outer region of the plasma exposure. The gas temperature distribution shows the same tendency of the sterilization rate. This implies that the gas temperature is one of sterilization indicators.

A new type of atmospheric low temperature plasma source was developed utilizing a coaxial cable for microwave transmission rather than conventionally used waveguides. The plasma source has advantages such as portability, simple configuration, and ability to operate with wide range of gases and its mixtures. It mainly consists of a cavity, a quartz discharge tube, a coaxial cable, a microwave power source and a gas supply system. Using this plasma source, we tried to clarify sterilization characteristics of Bacillus subtilis. The log reduction numbers of Bacillus subtilis was obtained at least 5 (10^<-5>) under the following operation conditions: gas flow rates of Ar (14 SLM) with mixing oxygen of 0.5 SLM and input power is 400 W. Distributions of temperature and gas velocity were also measured two-dimensionally by using E-type thermocouple and Pilot tube, respectively. The temperature distributions and the peak value of temperature were influenced by the gas flow rate and the kinds of mixing gas. The effective sterilization is obtained under the condition of the substrate surface temperature of 353 K.

The objective of this study was to develop a motion analysis system to evaluate relations between the activation of the lower limb muscles, the pedal force and the movement of the lower limb during the pedaling motion. To confirm the effectiveness of the proposed analysis system, we analyzed the pedaling motion of nine cyclists to identify their pedaling skill. In the experiments, cyclists were instructed to perform their pedaling technique at two pedaling rates (80-90 rpm and 110-120 rpm). Surface electromyography (EMG) signals was recorded from tensor of latae (TFL), rectus femoris (RF), hamstrings (HAM) and gastrocnemius (GAS), and pedal force was measured by a power meter (Pioneer Corporation). Furthermore, the lower limb motion during the pedaling was measured using a 3D motion capture system to investigate the relations among measured data as mentioned above. The experimental results show that the proposed analysis system reveals the pedaling skill of cyclists and the relations between the EMG data, the pedal force and the movement during the pedaling motion. In this paper, firstly, the activation section of the lower limb muscles during the pedaling was determined quantitatively. Secondly, Tukey-Kramer test was conducted to determine whether there are significant differences (p < 0.05) between the pedaling effectiveness of the three groups (elite group, amateur group and beginner group). Finally, the pedaling skill of the cyclists was revealed based on the analysis results of the measurement experiments.

Two kinds of road racer bicycles are employed to research vibration characteristics of driving bicycles. After obtaing the natural frequencies and modes by vibration test in the non-driving state, practical driving tests are carried out. The acceleration of vibration in the middle of the handles and under the saddles are measured and the corresponding spectral density functions are calculated based on FFT method. The results show that in the driving bicycles, the dominant frequencies exist between 10 Hz and 50 Hz and the lower two modes in the non-driving state are excited.
