For the measurement of the extinction coefficient of light through the atmosphere, the layout of instruments on a large scale is usually needed. Methods to estimate the extinction coefficient σ or σλ by measurements with simple portable instruments and computations are studied.In the first method, targets shown in Fig. 3 are used and σ is estimated from the reduction of contrast and the known values of contrast threshold.In the second method a is obtained from the visual range of large dark objects.In the third method σ is estimated from the change of apparent luminance of natural objects with distance. The spectral extinction coefficient σλ is computed by equations (11) from the change of apparent colors, where σλ is assumed to be σo (λo/λ) n. Thereby electronic computation is applied and the solution is obtained graphically.Though high accuracy is not expected from these methods, a large number of data are easily obtained because of experimental simplicity and they can be applied to the discussion of visibility for the traffic safety.

This paper treats luminous color control methods in pulsed arc discharges of Ne-Hg lamps. Luminous color is widely controlled from red color of Ne to blue color of Hg by changing the waveform of discharge current. Synthesized waveforms are favorable to make the glow to arc transition sure and to get good performance of color change of the high luminance positive column.

A physiological intensity transform function, y=Xn/ (Xn+Sn); (sigmoidal function) was introduced by examining the stimulus-response relationship in the retinal neural-cell to lightness scale.The responses of the photoreceptor and horizontal cell show that the light intensity is transformed to be nonlinear. Their transform function is the sigmoidal one, which fits to the psychological functions at low light level of the power function and at middle level of the logarithmic one.This function also explained the characteristics of Weber's ratio as a function of light intensity by adopting the effectof light adaptation, and simulated the Munsell gray scale as well as the CIE lightness function.

Today we live in a highly technological and car-oriented society. Car access has achieved noticeable developments and grown on a worldwide level. Along with the social benefits of the automobile, it is a widely known fact that major accidents and loss of life are occurring at increasing rates in almost every society today.This paper describes the effect of using a mobile phone on a driver's reaction time was evaluated experimentally by measuring the movement of the driver's eye-fixation point and his reaction time when a stimulus light was shines on his face from inside or outside the car.The results showed that using a mobile phone while driving (1) reduces the movement of the eye-fixation point to both the right and to the left, thus narrowing the range of the fixation point, and (2) delayed the reaction time by about 0.2 seconds. It also proposed the desirable position of setting up a visual display.

Descriptions are made of the theory and practice of the double spot high output ballast in which a fluorescent lamp is used.The theory states that, when the phase of the filament terminal voltage runs 90 degrees ahead of the tube voltage, the potential difference becomes equal between the opposing electrodes at both ends of the fluorescent lamp, thereby giving rise to the double spots, while the fluorescent lamp is in operation.Not only this fact in proved true, but also the quantitative reasoning on the formation of double spots is presented and backed up by some test data.

There has recently been a significant increase in the number of diabetic patients. Self-monitoring of the glucose levels in a patient's blood is essential for treating diabetes. Generally, blood glucose measurement requires an invasive blood sampling. Therefore, patients are always plagued by issues such as pain, stress, and risk of blood-borne infection. The objective of this study is to develop a non-invasive blood glucose measurement device based on NIR spectroscopy. We compared the prediction accuracy of the individual calibration curve and summarized calibration curve, and took the analysis wavelength range into consideration as fundamental experiments for taking a non-invasive blood glucose measurement. As a result, a clinically effective level of accuracy and a high correlation were confirmed in the individual calibration curve, and an analysis using a smaller wavelength range has a good influence on the accuracy.

The recommended illuminance in the Japanese lighting standard (JIS Z 9110) was determined based on Indow and Kawai's experimental study concerning the relationship between illuminance and readability of printed text. As the observers in the experiment were young, the recommended illuminance derived from the experiment cannot be applied directly to older people. To estimate the recommended illuminance for older people, a set of numerical analyses wasconducted. We found that the readability scale in the above experimental study correlates with the Visibility Level (VL) defined by CIE publication No.19/21. The luminance difference threshold (ΔLmin) derived from the contrast threshold function (Cth) of the CIE publication was divided into two parts (ΔLaf for foveal adaptation and ΔLeq for veiling luminance), assuming ΔLmin=ΔLaf+ΔLeq. After considering age factors in each part, the luminance difference threshold function ΔLmin*was reconstructed. Applying the ΔLmin* function to the VL analysis, the recommended illuminance for older people was estimated. The result shows that at least about 700 lx of illuminance may be recommended for older people reading 3-mm high printed characters. The visibility level analysis is a useful method for assessing readability considering age-related effects.

The heart rates, based on the R-R intervals, and pneumogramms of 18 subjects have been measured for 35 min. at illumination levels from 10 to 2, 000 lx. Light sources used were the fluorescent lamps with the color temperature of 4200 K. The wall in the test room was yellow-green close to 7.5 GY 8/2, and the room temperature was kept at 24 ± 1 ° C. The amount of physiological load was assessed from the mean heart rate, heart rate variability, and mean amplitude and period of pneumogramm.At the same time, psychological effects were investigated by use of a simple questionnaire.The results indicated that physiological load was minimum at the illumination level of 320 lx, and increased with increase or decrease in illumination level from 320 lx. Therefore the level of 320 lx appears to be the physiologically optimum level of illumination.Psychologically, however, the level of 1, 000 lx was estimated to be the most desirable level of illumination, and desirability decreased as the illumination level was icreased or decreased from 1, 000 lx.
