This study aims at establishing a heat transfer analysis of non-gray gas in a flow system. An integro-differential equation of energy conservation is established for the laminar channel flow of non-gray gas, which includes the multi-band feature of radiative gas. The numerical analysis was conducted and the results are compared with the results obtained from the analysis based on the conventional gray gas assumption. From the comparison of these results, it is made clear that the radiative heat flux q_r obtained from the gray analysis is greater than that of the non-gray analysis, and convective heat flux q_c is vice versa. By comparing the divergence of radiative heat flux and temperature profile, it is made clear that the gray gas analysis estimates excessively small absorption of radiation in the cold region near the heat absorbing surfaces. This results in the large q_r and small q_c compared with the non-gray analysis.

Sport science progresses step by step in the world. This work is a challenge to develop the athlete woman swimming suit with low fluid drag. To begin with, the fluid drag of the woman swimming suit is very small. It is very difficult to measure the several percent difference in the fluid drag of the swimming suit. Special experimental apparatus is developed to measure the fluid drag, precisely. It can successfully measure the fluid drag of athlete woman swimming suits at the precision 1〜2%. As a result, the cloth with low fluid drag is found. It is worked water repellent into every other stripe on the cloth. The cloth is woven of thin threads (polyester 80% and polyurethane 20%). Also, the relationship between fluid drag for the model body and the water depth from the water surface to the model body is investigated in details.

This paper is concerned with the beneficial effects due to additional holes or indentations. Two indentations facing each other with the tip of a crack is especially effective in retardation of crack propagation. The effects of the indentations can be estimated approximately from the existence of residual stresses produced by the indentations.

Optical (far infrared) and thermal properties of a copper nanostrip array on silicon substrate were investigated. It acted as a coupler between the radiation and heat on the surface as non-radiative components (phonon or plasmon polariton at the surface), aiming to enhance outward heat flux from the surface as a cooling device via radiation heat transfer. The emission spectrum of the heat radiation was controlled by the nanostrip array that was designed as the local plasmon and phonon resonant conditions. In the experiment, it generated the temperature gradient of 1.3K across the substrate thickness (0.5mm) when the substrate was contacted on the heater (42℃) in the atmosphere at 26℃.

In most cities, it is becoming evident that the increase in energy consumption is causing environmental problems, including a temperature rise in the urban atmosphere (an urban heat island) and air pollution. The present paper reports on the results of a three-dimensional computer simulation of the urban heat island in the Tokyo metropolitan area, as well as moisture migration. The three-dimensional governing equations for the urban atmospheric boundary layer were formulated by virtue of the vorticity-velocity vector potential method. Particular attention was focused on the representation of a buoyancy term in the equation of motion in the vertical direction, thereby describing the cross-over effect and stratified inversion layer near the ground surface. According to a recent computer simulation for urban warming in the Tokyo metro area in 2031,the maximum ambient temperature in the evening (18 : 00) at Otemachi will exceed 42℃. In contrast to the interior thermal comfort in residential and office buildings, the urban outdoor comfort is strongly affected by intense thermal radiation coming from the surface of the structures, as well as solar radiation. Motivated by the above facts, we propose a new standard effective temperature index (USET^*), which is applicable to urban comfort. By using this comfort index, assessment of the urban environment is made for both presentday Tokyo and Tokyo around 2030. Furthermore, it is suggested that a comprehensive urban environmental index (UEI). which includes pollutants and ultraviolet rays, is adopted for the future urban environment.

This paper describes the numerical simulation results of radiative heat transfer between the human body and an urban street canyon (building walls, pavement, and the sky) in the presence of participating non-gray gas mixtures consist of H_2O and CO_2. The ambient temperature of typical summer condition and the concentration of gas mixtures in summer Tokyo were assumed, and parallel infinite plane model and simple urban street canyon model were used. The results show that the participating gas significantly affects the infrared radiation field in urban street canyon. The radiation flux emitted by the participating gas is approximately 35% of the total incident radiation flux to the human body surface. This causes a homogenization of the infrared radiation field. Gas radiation plays an important role in the heat transfer between human and environment under hot and humid summer condition.

This paper describes numerical results of a thermal and chemical nonequilibrium plume of high-temperature air. The gas is expanded from an orifice into low-density stationary air as a free jet. The gas considered here is high-temperature air composed of N_2, O_2, N, O, NO, NO^+and e^-, and translational-rotational and vibrational-electron temperatures are treated in a two-temperature model. In addition to this model, a six-temperature model using a multi-vibrational temperature model is adopted. The governing equations for computation are axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations coupled with species vibrational energy, electron energy and species mass conservation equations. The equations have been numerically solved using the second-order upwind TVD scheme of the Harten-Yee type.

This paper describes new mechanisms, principle, control methods, computer simulation and experimental results of the second version of an all-direction steering-type mobile robot which has a spherical monowheel. Basic simulation results of straight running and rotation coincide with experimental results of the robot, and these results clarified, firstly, relationships between center of gravity and running ability of the robot, and secondly, the relationships between the robot's rotational angle and friction torque of the spherical wheel with the ground. Furthermore, it was confirmed experimentally that the new robot has high maneuverability, such as omnidirectional travel with zero-turning-radius rotation on any kind of surface. Therefore, it is expected that the spherical-wheeled robot developed here can be applicable as a safe personal service robot that can work with human beings in a limited space.

This paper proposes a new vehicle type mechanism which has 4-Wheel-Drive Omni-Wheels with 4-Wheel-Steering. This mechanism is a superset of conventional Omni-directional vehicle and some car type mechanism. Then with some DOF fixed, the mechanism can be applied many conventional driving methods. Steering and driving characteristics of the vehicle is illustrated with geometrical analysis. A straight driving method with non-step gear ratio by symmetric steering and a turning method by difference of driving speed are tested. Experiments are held with a vehicle model and some difference between the analysis and experiments caused by dynamic effect such as driving or cornering force.

Recently, the concept of Mizen Boushi (reliability problem prevention) has been applied in automotive development as a tool to refine drawings to the greatest completion possible by the prototype stage. In this point of view, we are promoting a quality innovation process, "GD^3" that means "Good Design", "Good Discussion" and "Good Design Review". The process utilizes creative FMEA, FTA and a System Design Review. These tools focus attention on the many potential problems that could occur due to a change in design or environment. The System Design Review is especially useful to examine potential failure modes, root causes, part drawings and prototype part designs. This is followed by a Design Review Based on Failure Mode (DRBFM method for short), as a tool to guide discussion. In this way, it is possible to generate the best approach to handling design, evaluation, and production concerns. This paper will introduce some of the specific ways that this creative process is currently used in development as a tool to prevent reliability problems.

This paper propose the concept of hidden problem visualization and measures method in design stage with system DRBFM (Design Review Based on Failure Mode). The potential problem in the design stage involves unnoticed problems and misunderstood problems. The unnoticed problem can be visualized by the work flow of system DRBFM which takes into account the hierarchical structure of products. The misunderstood problems is also visualized by discussions in system DRBFM, containing the collation of concerning design with Design Regulation and the verification by Professional adviser based on Attention in operation. Afterwards, the total of misunderstanding problems reflects in improvement of Attention in operation. By the above concept, system DRBFM can posess two functions. The one is as for the useful tool of OJT (On the Job Training) which educates designer who has misunderstood or oversighted immediately by Professional adviser. The other is the construction of precationary measures organization with system DRBFM, Professional adviser, Design Regulation and its Attention in operation. To display the use of thease functions, the proposed concept is applied to design change of hair drier. The application example can display the role of all part of system DRBFM intelligibly.

The concept of Mizen Boushi(reliability problem prevention) has been applied in automotive development. Recently, we are promoting a quality innovation process, "GD3" that means "Good Design", "Good Discussion" and "Good Design Review". In the first paper, it was presented to utilize a System Design Review during development, in which we discuss potential failure modes, root causes and examine parts drawing and prototype parts design with the DRBFM(Design Review Based on Failure Mode) method. This paper will introduce that we completed the System DRBFM as a universal Mizen Boushi method, which can be utilized for discussions from a complex/complicated system to elements with hierarchy block diagrams of product and management.

Supersonic combustion using a catalytic combustion in a cold supersonic flow field was investigated in a square duct with a backward-facing step. The free stream Mech number was M_m=1.81. Hydrogen was injected transversely behind a backward-facing step into a cold air free stream. Using a catalyst in a cold supersonic turbulent mixing layer, it was found that hydrogen reacted stably to oxygen in the air flow. The relationship between the heat release due to catalytic combustion and supersonic flow properties, which influence the supersonic combustion, was clarified experimentally. The spatial distribution of heat release generated by catalytic combustion in the supersonic turbulent mixing layer is discussed. It was found that the heat release due to the catalytic combustion had a maximum at the outer edge of the mixing layer.

To clarify the seizure resistance of stainless steel balls of which the surface layer was thermally diffused after being Sn-plated, a four-ball test was carried out with grease lubrication. From the tests, the following results were obtained. The diameter of the wear scar of the ball lubricated with the grease containing a molybdenum disulfide additive was smaller than that of the ball lubricated with the grease without the additive, and the diameter of the wear scar increased with increasing concentration of the additive. The load at the incipient stage of seizure of the ball of which the diffused surface layer was about 6 μm thick was 2〜4 times larger than that of the ball without the diffused surface layer. Further, it was found that the seizure resistance of the balls could be estimated from the critical surface temperature and that the critical temperature increased with increasing concentration of the additive.

Mechanical paradox planetary gears are suitable for power transmissions of current robots, such as space manipulators, which drive large-inertia loads, because the gears offer high reduction ratio, small size, light weight and high reliability. However, mechanical paradox planetary gears are subject to a drawback in that their efficiencies are lower than those of conventional planetary gears. The efficiencies of mechanical paradox planetary gears are hence theoretically analyzed and evaluated by defining the tooth number modification of a planet gear to deal with all the possible combinations of tooth numbers. The following results are obtained : the efficiencies are greatly influenced by the efficiencies of the planet and internal gear pairs ; the maximum efficiencies are minimally influenced by the reduction ratio, and they are obtained when the factors of the contact ratio of the gear pairs are approximately equal ; the maximum efficiency is approximately 78% if the tooth surface friction coefficients are 0.1.
