In active noise control, the transfer characteristic of an acoustic feedback path has a considerable influence on the stability of the control system. When the acoustic system has a feedback path, the control system often causes unstable behavior called howling. An adaptive howling canceler designed to prevent thin howling is studied in this paper. This adaptive howling canceler estimates the acoustic feedback path and acts to suppress the howling. In this paper, the effect of this adaptive howling canceler was considered for two different adaptive noise control algorithms. One was the conventional filtered-x LMS (least mean squares) algorithm and the other was the frequency-domain adaptive algorithm proposed by the authors. From computer simulations, it was shown that the howling canceler works effectively with the filtered-x LMS algorithm. On the other hand, the control system became unstable with the frequency-domain adaptive algorithm. To alleviate this unstable behavior, variable output gain was considered. A good result was obtained with this variable gain.

This paper presents a simple method for controlling both the motion and contact force of a flexible manipulator without calculating inverse dynamics. The contact force is converted into a velocity vector according to the proposed force/velocity conversion law considering the flexibility of the manipulator. The velocity vector which is tangent to the constraint surface is calculated using velocity control law. The desired velocity vector is obtained as a sum of the above two velocity vectors, and is converted into angular velocity vectors considering deflectional velocity of the flexible links. The desired angular velocity vector is obtained as a sum of the above angular velocity vector and strain feedback term. Motion and force control is performed using DC motors whose desired values are the above desired angular velocity vectors. Computer simulations and experimental analyses are carried out to clarify the validity of the proposed method.

An approach for active noise control using structural vibration was proposed. No acoustic instruments such as loud speakers and microphones are necessary in this approach. The adaptive FIR filter using the LMS algorithm was used in the control system. Both a computer simulation and an experiment were carried out. The importance of using a howling canceler with the adaptive FIR filter was shown by the simulation. In the experiment, the vibration of the sidewalls of the duct was used for control. Good results were acquired using the simple controller.

Approach for modeling and feedback noise control of a one-dimensional duct based on experimental modal analysis and LMI is presented in this paper. The modal parameters of a coupled acoustical-structural system are derived from measured noise and vibration data. The state equation of the duct is described by the identified modal parameters. An active noise controller is designed based on LMI approach in which an optimization problem is defined as a mixed H_2/H_∞ control problem. The performances of the noise reduction and the robust stability are described with H_2 and H_∞ norms of the closed loop system, respectively. Frequency response shaping is performed by the presented approach with weighted modal matrix and frequency weighting functions. Simulations and experiments are carried out and the desired performances are obtained by the presented approach.

A new adaptive control algorithm in frequency domain was proposed. This frequency domain approach corresponds to the ordinary filtered-x least mean square (LMS) algorithm in discrete time domain. In this approach, the fast Fourier transform (FFT) was used for converting signals between frequency domain and discrete time domain. Since the computaion processes in these two domains are almost independent with each other, this algorithm can be realized effectively by using two processors. Computer simulations were carried out for investigating convergence characteristics of this approach. As the result of these simulations, it was shown that this algorithm has faster convergence with less computation comparing to the ordinary filtered-x LMS algorithm.

For the purpose of applying biomass sources to various industrial products, a bamboo powder composite was developed by injection molding. The matrices used for the composite were a cornstarch-based biodegradable resin (CP) and polypropylene (PP). To improve compatibility between the powder and matrices, alkali-treatment using NaOH solution was carried out for the powder. The results showed that tensile strength of the PP matrix composite increases largely if the alkali-treated powder is used as reinforcement, as compared to the composite reinforced by the untreated powder. The CP matrix composite was also improved in strength, though the degree of increase was not so effective. There may be an optimal NaOH concentration to increase mechanical properties.

This study investigates a computer support system applying functional modeling techniques for the conceptual design phase of engineering systems. The previous paper proposed a systematic representation of design information from the viewpoints of goals, functions, and structure. This paper describes a support system of component assignment to functions by effectively using past design cases, where two case retrieval techniques are proposed. The one called "function flow simplification matching" simplifies the function flow of a case and compares it with the function flow specified by the designer. This matching technique realizes flexible case retrieval. The other is the utilization of ordinal component hierarchy data abstracted from past similar plant designs. The data is used to go into the details of design structure step by step. The feasibility of the component assignment technique is investigated by some design trials of a fluidized refuse incineration plant.

The need to develop space welding technology as fast as possible is stressed for efficient repair and construction of space development projects. It is shown that in a vacuum like in space conventional GTA welding in which the solid tungsten electrode is used could not be applied. To solve this problem, the authors propose the GHTA process using a hollow tungsten electrode. An arc discharge could be started and maintained by flowing a trace amount of argon gas from the end of the electrode. In the proposed GHTA process, the stationary arc discharge which can be used as the welding heat source, starts after several seconds of the transient arc discharge. Also, the characteristics of arc discharges and penetrations due to the GHTA process in a vacuum are clarified.

This paper mainly focused on the control system design and the control performance of the power assist lifting device used in power plant construction site. This device consists of several electric-chain-blocks, force sensors and a CPU. This mechanism is as follows. (1) Force sensors detect chain tension changes by human force. (2) The CPU calculates the required outputs from the force sensors. (3) Electric-chain-blocks move the object in the intended direction by human force. The control performance was verified through experiments using a 300 kg boiler panel that was suspended by the 2 electric-chain-blocks. A heavy control object could be moved, translated and rotated by human force using the proposed device. Positioning performance errors were suppressed to under 1 mm.

本研究は, トランペットを人間と同様に演奏することのできる自動演奏ロボットを開発しようとするものである。これまでに開発した演奏ロボットでは, ピッチの安定した制御が困難, 音域が広く出来ない, などの問題があった。今回の報告では, ピッチを安定に制御するための機構として, 開閉ボールねじに取り付けた一対のローラーで, 人工唇を押さえながらローラーの間隔を変えることにより, 唇の緊張度を変化させる機構を採用した。この機構の有効性を実験により検証した。

We observed the behavior of a rider on a skateboard and built experimental apparatuses. Further we analyze the characteristic by using a two dimensional analytical model. Comparing experimental and analytical results we show that primary propulsion of a skateboard is given by twisting motion of a rider. Propulsion is influenced considerably by the phase difference between twisting motion and tilting the front and rear wheel axles, that is, torque acting on a skateboard and angle of the two axles.

For a horizontal well or an extended reach well, which is promising for well construction in . future, a well casing is subjected to local wear of wall thickness on its inside surface due to rotational contact with tool joint or drill pipe during drilling. Collapse strength of worn casing is analyzed as an unstable problem by the elastic-plastic finite-element method (FEM) and the decrease ratio of collapse strength due to casing wear is formulated by nonlinear programming using parameters of the wear shape. The elastic-plastic FEM is fully applicable as values calculated by the FEM program agree well with those of experiments. It was found that the decrease ratio of collapse strength of a worn casing is linearly proportional to the decrease ratio of wall thickness in both modes of plastic collapse and elastic collapse, and that the apical angle of the wear shape has a slight influence on collapse strength.

A theoretical method is presented for the bending problems of perforated plates within the framework of the Poisson-Kirchhoff theory of thin plates. The method is illustrated by giving the solution for an infinite plate with a doubly periodic set of circular holes having a square or triangular pattern under unequal uniform bending moments about the axes of symmetry. Numerical results are given for the distributions of the bending moments around the holes and stress concentration factors over the entire range of pitch to diameter ratios of general interest. The results show the power and flexibility of the technique. The solution obtained here can be used, just as it is, for a plate with holes of arbitrary shape and array. Also the extension of the method to a plate under a class of loads other than uniform bending, e.g. twisting moment or transverse shearing force acting on the edges of the plate is quite straightforward.

This paper proposes a method to estimate the radiational sound field from circular pipe structures which have vibration surface. Laplace transform and the Wiener-Hopf technique are used to analyze the sound propagation and radiation. After this analytical formulation, a computer simulation algorithm has been derived as a form of matrix equations. Experimental investigation has also been performed using model acoustic tubes to verify analytical results. Sufficient agreement has been found between the numerical calculation and the measured response, and this concludes that the method proposed here can be practically applied to estimate the acoustic behavior of some machine components, as mentioned above.
