The purpose of this paper is to investigate the potential application of the cutting in the nitrogen atmosphere. In order to clarify the effects of the nitrogen atmosphere, cutting tests were carried out on plain carbon steel S45C with carbide tool. Cutting tests were conducted in the sealed chamber of which the atmosphere was changeable. Nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide gases and air were used as the atmosphere.

This paper investigates a thermal-fluid dynamics of CAMUI (Cascaded Multistage Impinging-jet) type hybrid rocket developed in Hokkaido University by using a large eddy simulation of turbulence. The performance of the hybrid rocket is sensitive to the changing shape of its chamber. To clarify this effects, numerical simulations were conducted using measured shapes. The results show the flow structures such as impinging fountain flow depending on the shapes at different burning time. Thease structures generate the particular heat flux distributions on the surface.

In order to investigate the complex behavior of collapsing bubbles in cloud cavitation, numerical simulations have been performed by solving the 2-D governing equations for gas-liquid two-phase media. Here, the equation of state for such media is derived from the locally homogeneous assumption, so that the apparent compressibility can be taken into account. The interface of a bubble or a cloud of bubbles is treated as a contact discontinuity surface, where the values of density and void fraction are allowed to jump. When the void fraction in a bubble cloud is almost 100%, the collapsing behavior agrees well with that of a single bubble. Numerical results of the interaction between some bubbles and an incident shock wave show qualitative agreement with experimental results. Therefore, complex interaction phenomena between multibubbles can be simulated when some small bubbles are arranged in a bubble cloud by distributing the corresponding void fractions nonuniformly.

Now, coniferous trees of the enormous quantity that it planted in the days after the war reaches time to cut it down. But, it can't be said that no prospect of effectively using coniferous trees has yet emerged. To use that effectively, improvement to the high-performance wood is indispensable. In this paper, we try to destroy closed border pit membrane of Sugi (Japanese name, its scientific name is Cryptomeria japonica D.Don) to improve the permeability of water. And dried Sugi infused with several medicine to have it become a fire-resistant wood. Using the suitable strength of underwater shock wave, it is possible to destroy only closed border pit membrane but affect the original strength.

This paper discusses design issues of a manipulator/vehicle system floating on water, which consists of a vehicle controlled by thrusters and a manipulator mounted on it. The design of the system is very important for the control of such a system, because the controllability of the system is largely affected by the design of the system. In this paper, we propose a method to design the location of thrusters based on the concept of Translatability and Rotatability of the vehicle by actuators. The translatability (rotatability) of the vehicle represents the relationship between the output forces of thrusters and the equivalent force (moment) evaluated at the centroid of the vehicle. We first derive the relationship and then reveal that the equivalent force (moment) forms an ellipsoid. The method is natural in the sense that the force and the moment, which have dfferent dimensions, are dealt with independently. Examples illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The free-edge stress singularity usually develops near the edge of the interface of the bonded dissimilar materials. Anisotropic materials may be used for making bonded dissimilar materials. When two materials are bonded, an interlayer, for example an adhesive layer, may be inserted between two materials. In this study, free-edge stress singularity of bonded dissimilar orthotropic materials with an interlayer was investigated by using the boundary element method. It was found that the influence of the interlayer on the stress distribution on interface was limited in the region of the order of the interlayer thickness around the edge of interface similar to the bonded dissimilar isotropic materials. Free-edge stress singularity disappeared by inserting a proper materials between the bonded dissimilar materials.

The authors proposed a new practical optimum design method that consists of two steps: the design of experiments and mathematical programming. The design of experiments is used to generate approximate evaluation functions for the controlling behavior depending on the changes in design variables of an object structure, by a series of finite element analyses (FEA). Based upon an orthogonal array of a combination of design variables, effects of the design variables can be calculated by a relatively small number of FEA, and then the approximate evaluation functions are generated by those effects based upon analysis of variance. The evaluation functions can also be used as direct tools for estimating the behavior of design structure. Finally, a successive quadratic programming (SQP) method is employed to solve the optimization problem of the approximate evaluation functions. It is confirmed that the proposed method can be used for almost all kinds of the nonlinear problems including the impact behavior of structures, and that it can be carried out in much smaller number of FEA than the other existing methods. As an example, the present method was used to solve an optimum design problem of an automobile seat frame subjected to impact loading. It was found that the present method is a very effective and powerful tool for the optimum design of various practical design problems.現在提案されている最適化設計のシステムの多くは複雑,効率が悪いという問題を持っている.本論文では,実験計画法,構造解析および数理計画法を組み合わせた実用的で効率の良い最適化方法を提案する.

It is well known that a rotating stall in vaneless diffuser occurs at low flow rate. This report treats the rotating stall in a vaneless diffuser coupled with a impeller by using a commercial code with the standard κ-ε turbulence model. It was found that the rotating stall in the vaneless diffuser could be simulated, and the onset of the rotating stall in the impeller depends on the gradient of the impeller pressure performance curve. In case with a whirling impeller, whirling speed has influence on the number of stall cells in the diffuser

The aim of this study is the fluid dynamic evaluation of a hydrodynamic levitation centrifugal pump developed by AIST. Since the Pump has a hydrodynamic bearing rotating at 1900rpm, we introduced a new high-speed visualization systems with Double-pulse YAG laser. Visualized sections were the impeller, and outlet regions. The result of flow visualization showed good correlation with animal experiment and CFD.

In order to clarify the effects of density ratio and laminar burning velocity on the vortex bursting phenomenon, the premixed flame propagation in swirling flow has been examined by the numerical calculation for various preheating temperatures and equivalence ratios. In this calculation, the flame is fixed in the computational domain by adding an axial flow to the unburnt premixed gas so as to obtain the steady state propagation characteristics. The obtained results are as follows: The present flame propagation velocities relatively agree on "the back-pressure drive flame propagation theory (radial expansion)" proposed by Ishizuka et al. The variation of the pressure along the vortex axis occurs between the inflow part and the flame front, and the pressure in the burnt region is almost uniform. Therefore, the propagation speed must be estimated by the Bernoulli's equation by using the density of unburnt mixture. We have proposed a new formula on the basis of the present calculation results, and have confirmed that flame propagation speed accords qualitatively and quantitatively with this formula. Moreover, we have suggested that, considering the application to the combustor with swirling flow, the preheating of premixed gas enhances its performance due to the large burning velocity.
