The wavelength of hunting motion is one of basic quantities expressing the hunting motion characteristics of a railway vehicle. Though formulae for a single wheel-set and a rigid truck are well known, they are not applicable to a soft truck, in which horizontal suspension stiffness between the axle box and truck frame is small. In this paper, an approximate expression for the wavelength of a soft truck is presented and verified with measured data.

This paper proposes a sound identification method for a mobile robot in home and office environment. We propose a simple sound database called Pitch-Cluster-Maps(PCMs) based on Vector Quantization approach. Binarized frequency spectrum is used for PCMs codebook generation. It can describe a variety of sound sources, not only voice, from short term sound input. The proposed PCMs sound identification requires several tens(msec) of sound input, and is suitable for a mobile robot application which condition is dynamically changing. We implemented the proposed method on our mobile robot audition system equipped with a 32ch microphone array. Robot noise reduction using proposed PCMs recognition is applied to each input signal of a microphone array. The performance of daily sound recognition for separated sound sources from robot in motion is evaluated.

We have developed a new simple inversion scheme for retrieving collision kernels from the change of droplet size distributions due to collision growth. Three-dimensional direct numerical simulations (DNS) of colliding droplets in an isotropic steady turbulence are performed in order to investigate the validity of the developed inversion scheme. In the DNS, air turbulence is calculated using a quasi-spectral method, and droplet motions are tracked by a Lagrange method. The initial droplet size distribution is set to be equivalent to that obtained in a wind tunnel experiment. Comparison between collision kernels retrieved by the developed inversion scheme and those obtained by DNS shows that the collision kernel can be retrieved within 15% error. This verifies the feasibility of retrieving collision kernels by using the present inversion scheme.

An experimental study on the heat transfer coefficient and critical heat flux in two-phase double-tube thermosyphons was carried out using water, ethanol and R113 as the working liquids. The same experiment for a single-tube thermosyphon was also performed for comparison. The effects of the top-end shape of inner tubes on the heat transfer coefficient and the critical heat flux were investigated in detail. As a result, it was shown that the heat transfer coefficient was not significantly affected by the difference of the top-end shape, but the critical heat flux was very sensitive to the top-end shape of the inner tubes. For R113, the critical heat flux in the thermosyphon with the inner tube having a T- or flange-shape top-end, was about four times as large as that in the single-tube thermosyphon.

This paper describes a new method to measure and analyze three-dimensional rotation and translation analysis of upper limb in basketball shot form. In general, the shot form is measured by taking the photograph of motion with the high-speed camera and/or video camera and analyzing the photograph with direct linear transformation method (DLT method). The suggesting measurement method was derived by the kinematic human body model analysis. The measurement system developed by using the three dimensional rate gyro sensors set at the several body positions can measure the three dimensional rotations and the three dimensional translations of various parts of body. By using this system, the motion of a thin part such as wrists and ankles can be measured easily. In addition, this system can measure the basketball shot forms of various players correctly.

This study deals with the influence which the degree of devotion of the driver using the steering assistance system has on manual steering after the system stop. In this experiment, the course which imitated the highway by the driving simulator. The driver is run using the steering assistance system. The system stops after that and the driver makes a lane change. In this analysis we compared the driver vehavior in this case with the case where the system is not used. Consequently, the driver regained the feeling of steering promptly after the system stop, and vehicles did not depart from a lane. However, the driver behavior is better after the system stop when the degree of devotion to driving of the driver at the time of system operation is high.

新たに建設された東京中央郵便局は郵便物の取扱に對して機械的搬送設備を利用し作業を促進すると同時に従業員から不必要な勞力を除く様にされて居る。此設備は尚製作中で茲に發表するのは其設計の大綱である。取扱設備に於ては機械装置と手力との聯絡、時限及び速度の關係が最重要であつて全系統の効率を決定するのは主として此點である。機械部分に關しては單一化、標準化を圖り熔接を利用して重量を輕減し音響及振動の抑制に苦心を拂つてある。

Among the factors which affect the performance characteristics of a pneumatic ejector, the effect of the distance α' from the nozzle exit section to the entrance of the parallel part of the mixing tube was experimentally dealt with in the present paper. It was found that the optimum distance α' for the highest vacuum and the highest ejector efficiency was α'=15mm, so long as the present ranges of experiments were concerned. As the inner diameter e of the parallel part of the mixing tube was selected as e=9.55mm, the optimum value above-mentioned yields to α'/e=1.57,which coincides with the results obtained previously by L.J. Kastner, J.R. Spooner for a pneumatic ejector. Besides, the present authors have measured the pressure distributions in the mixing tube, the results of which were compared with the theories by W. Tollmien and A.M. Kuethe. Further, the results of the present paper were compared with the results hitherto published for steam ejectors.

The crushing behavior of cylindrical shells subjected to an axial impact force is studied by FEM, and a comparison between numerical results and theoretical predictions as well as a qualitative comparison between numerical estimates and experimental results are made and discussed. Moreover, a crashworthiness maximization technique for shell structures is developed and applied to the axial crushing problem of cylindrical shell. In the program system presented in this study, an explicit finite element code, DYNA3D is adopted for simulating complicate crushing behavior of shell structures. The response surface approximation technique is applied to construct an approximated design sub-problem in the preassigned design space by using the technique of design-of-experiment. The approximated sub-problem is solved by the usual mathematical programming technique. These optimization processes is repeated until the given convergence conditions will be satisfied.

In order to realize simultaneous reduction of NO_x and Particulate emissions, effects of combustion chamber geometry were investigated in a high speed direct-injection diesel engine. The reentrant combustion chambers with different throat diameter were compared in terms of engine performance, combustion characteristics and emissions such as NO_x, particulate and THC. The phenomena of combustion process were also observed with endoscopic high speed photography. The results showed that when the throat diameter of a reentrant combustion chamber was reduced to an extent, NO_x and particulate decreased simultaneously due to retarded injection timing and the intensified squish.

Field experiments on utilizing the cold energy obtained during winter by storing it in the ground as artificial permafrost using heat pipes have been carried out over several years. Using the data obtained from the experiments, mumerical simulations were performed for the creation and degradation of a frozen underground zone. For predicting the temperature field, the finite difference method was used, and the latent heat associated with freezing or thawing of the soil water was treated as a heat sink (source). The simulations were performed using three kinds of soil: silt, clay and sand. The following fact became clear as a result of the simulations: if the two-dimensionality of the ground temperature is maintained under suitable soil conditions, it is possible to surround an area of 8m×8m with 4m-thick artificial permafrost using 72 lengths of heat pipe.

For more effective ventilation from the room floor, where polluted air and dust arise, a new ventilation system located on the ceiling has been developed by using fresh intake air and generating a tornadolike vortex to ventilate the air near the floor both locally and directly. In a water tank, which simulated a room space, the same tornadolike vortices were visualized using ink diffused from the base, and the ventilation efficiency was measured. In order to apply this new ventilation system to local cooling, the heat transfer performance at the floor was also investigated.
