Monthly quantitative sampling of caridean shrimps and prawns, and logging of river water temperatures were undertaken over 13 months in the Kawazu-yatsu and Ogamo Rivers, Izu Peninsula, and the Morito and Shimoyama Rivers, Miura Peninsula, Japan in order to clarify the overwintering status. Low water temperature tolerances of 9 major species were also examined using culture experiments. Water temperatures in the Kawazu-yatsu River were highest throughout the year due to the inflow of hot spring water. Fifteen shrimp and prawn species were collected, the number of individuals tending to decrease in winter in most. In particular, two species, Macrobrachium australe and M.lar, which have low tolerance to low water temperature were found only in autumn in three rivers except Kawazu-Yatsu River, and it was confirmed that they died due to low water temperature in winter. The rate of decline from autumn to winter for the species established in the study area was the lowest in Paratya compressa, which has the highest tolerance to low water temperatures, and in the Kawazu-Yatsu River, which has the highest water temperatures. The decrease in the populations of M. formosense, M japonicum, Caridina leucosticta and C. typus occurred earlier than the decline in river water temperatures, suggesting that they moved to places where it is difficult to collect them, such as deep pools.

ごく最近,新種として記載されたヨモギホンヤドカリの分布と繁殖生態を,模式産地近くの函館湾葛登支の潮間帯において調べた.本種は潮間帯上部の潮線付近の転石域にパッチ状に分布し,季節的移動は見られない.4月から5月にかけて,雄が産卵直前の雌が入っている貝殻をはさみ持つ産卵前ガード行動が観察される.交尾・産卵直後にガード行動は終了する.抱卵雌は4月から2月の間に観察される.抱卵雌の出現時期とその後の卵の発達状態から,主な産卵期は5月で,雌は1年に1回産卵し,約9カ月間という長期にわたって抱卵することが明らかになった.交尾前ガード行動はホンヤドカリ属に普通に見られる行動であるが,長期にわたる抱卵期間は同地に生息する同属他種,あるいは他所に分布する同属のそれと比較しても非常に長く,きわだった繁殖特性といえる.このことは本種の属するホンヤドカリ属は,種類数の豊富さとともに,その繁殖特性にも多様な面が含まれることを示唆している.

函館湾,和歌山および熊本県天草松島から採集された標本に基づき,ホンヤドカリ属の1新種pagurus nigrofasciaを記載した.本種は,北アメリカ西岸に分布するP.samuelis(Stimpson,1857),P.hirsutiusculus(Dana,851),P.venturensis Coffin,1957,および日本を含む西部北太平洋温帯域に分布するP.filholi De Man,1887(ホンヤドカリ)に近縁であると考えられるが,いくつかの形態的特徴と色彩により容易に識別される.本新種は函館湾では周年にわたり潮間帯岩礁で普通にみられるが,他の産地では冬から初春にかけて出現するのみである.また,これまでの本邦各地における調査にも関わらず,本新種が採集されたのは上記の3カ所だけであった.Stimpson(1858)が,函館湾からP.hirsutiusculusとして記録したものが実際には本新種であった可能性があるが,標本はシカゴ大火災の際に失われたものと考えられ,現在では確認できない.標本に基づいたP.hirsutiusculusの本邦における記録は,stimpson(1858)の他にはYokoya(1933)による津軽海峡の水深110mからの採集記録があるが,Yokoyaの標本は採集水深が探すぎ,P.hirsutiusculusとも本新種とも異なるものと考えられる.最近の文献においても,本邦におけるP.hirsutiusculusの分布は現在のところ確認されていない.文献の記録に基づき,P.hirsutiusculusにはエゾホンヤドカリという和名が与えられてきたが,エゾホンヤドカリの分類学的位置を決定するのは現時点では不可能であり,本新種には新称ヨモギホンヤドカリを提唱する.

An endangered freshwater crab, Ryukyum yaeyamense (Minei, 1973) (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura: Potamidae), is recorded for the first time from Kohamajima Island, Yaeyama island group, southern Ryukyu Islands, Japan. Kohamajima Island becomes the third distributional island of the species. The morphological characteristics of the species, their habitats, and ecological notes of the species are provided.

The ecological distribution of phytal amphipods on seaweeds were investigated in a Sargassum bed at the coast of Tomioka Peninsula, Amakusa, Kyushu. Eight plants of 4 Sargassum species were collected underwater by the vertically stratified sampling method in May when these seaweeds fuliy grown up. By this sampling, 10 species of caprellids and 21 species of gammarids were obtained. The similarities among epiphytic amphipod assemblages of each host plant were analyzed for Caprellidae and Gammaridea respectively. These assemblages resembled each other, consequently it was speculated that these epiphytic amphipods generally have no specific preference to the host plants. Simultaneously, two groups were recognized in both taxa, namely, one group consists of S, patens and S. horneri which were collected in the outer part of the Sargassum bed, another is S. thunbergii and S. hemiphyllum which mainly flourish inside. The difference seemed to be caused by the factors which related with wave action or other hydrodynamic conditions. In the vertical distribution of the biomass of each alga, the weight of higher part was normally heavier than that of lower part, and this tendency was also observed in the individual number of amphipods on each part. Vertical distribution of 6 species of amphipods (Caprella decipiens, C. danilevskii, C. tsugarensis, Ampithoe orientalis, Aoroides columbiae, Pontogeneia rostrata) showed high positive correlations with those of seaweeds biomass. Exclusive of S. horneri, C. monoceros and Phliantidae sp. 1 also showed positive correlations with the vertical distribution of seaweed biomass like other species. On S. horneri, however, they mainly occurred on the lower part of seaweed and showed negative correlation.

Tegumental scales are documented in two families of Caridea, viz. Hippolytidae (genus Lysmata) and Rhynchocinetidae (genera Cinetorhynchus and Rhynchocinetes), raising to seven the number of families in which such scales occur. The scales in Rhynchocinetidae are similar to those in Pandalidae, but the scales in Lysmata spp. are of a slightly different type than previously documented. SEM observations reveal that the scales easily abrade and attention is drawn to the possibility that tegumental scales may be more widespread across families, but are difficult to observe. Caution is advised when considering differences in pattern (not form) between species given this high potential for abrasion. Given the low number of documented occurrences across families and genera, the potential phylogenetic information content of tegumental scales is currently unknown, but could be informative.
