Symbolically expressed by the concept of flat culture, it has been a long time since the distinction between high culture/popular culture and the definition of youth culture or the youth themselves became blurred. This paper traces the process of identity formation of rock culture and "the youth" as rock listeners in Japan by clarifying the transition in narratives tracing a distinction between the inner and the outer in each Japanese rock magazine. By so doing, the paper demonstrates that the difficulty counter cultures face today is mainly derived from the difficulty in imagining the mass of the population as a unified community.

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the logic behind the historic preservation movements in Daegu, Korea. There are many Japanese houses in Daegu that were built in the era of Japanese occupation. This paper describes the logic behind a NGO in Daegu, Korea (CSES: Citizen's Solidarity for Ecological Street) that seeks to preserve these houses. The CSES has organized citizen's fieldwork to uncover "lived urban histories" in Daegu. They have found many Japanese houses. CSES has placed them in context not as part of the Colonial legacy but as part of historic resources. This study takes the historic preservation movement in the context of community formation. The finding is as follows. CSES contextualizes "histories" of the community into life experiences of local residents for community formation.

The relationship between descriptions which sociology makes and the value judgment of the sociologist in making such descriptions has long been recognized as a serious problem for sociology. Sociologists traditionally have struggled to exclude this judgment from description, or more recently, insist that such judgment should be included in description. In this paper, I suggest that such a dichotomy based on inclusion versus exclusion is predicated on the on the systematic neglect of at least one sort of social phenomenon which sociology can/should describe in its own right.

Teiji Furuhashi revealed his HIV-positive status to his friends by "the letter" in October, 1992. This revelation started grass-roots movement in Kyoto, Japan. This paper investigates why though he let only about 20 friends know his HIV-positive status the letter sparked movements such as those associated with multiple identities that were not limited to the HIV/AIDS. In what way is the rhetoric of of Furuhashi's counter claim making unique? This paper suggests that Furuhashi's counter claiming had such an impact because it used a motif that problematized not only HIV/AIDS or male homosexuality and a rhetoric based on comradeship.<br>Furthermore, rather than identifying himself as a gay male homosexual, he identified himself as an artist. Therefore, this allowed movement participants to conflate intimate internal personal relationships and make rhetorical links among various sexual/gender identities.

Abortion is at the heart of "sexual politics" including a serious struggle between feminists and consevative anti-abortionists. The aim of this paper is to reconsider the significance and limitations of feminists' vindication of women's right to abortion and reproductive freedom argumentation. After surveying abortion's situation generally and defining the meaning of reproductive freedom, the paper discusses the relation of women's freedom and selective abortion and concludes that women's rights and handicapped's rights are not contradictive.

This paper explores the concept of "ethnic contact" used by a Japanese sociologist Eizo Koyama (1899–1983) to analyze three types of travel/displacement: immigration, tourism and fieldwork. Since the early 20<sup>th</sup> century, many fieldworkers had begun to authorize their own inter-cultural practices in contrast to other ones by tourists and immigrants, etc. But Koyama claimed that tourism involved the meaning of fieldwork as well as one of leisure activity. Why is it? By reconsidering his claim under the Japanese tourism policy in the 1930–<br>40s, I argue that it reflected the process in which tourists were perceived as agency mediating between different cultures while ethnic contact became an efficient medium for (re-)presenting national self-image. I also argue that his population policy attempted empire building through the media of contact between Japanese immigrants and natives in the colonies.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the struggles in the physical examination for conscription between draft dodgers and Japanese army surgeons. The draft dodgers tried to escape from conscription by asserting that they were not sufficiently fit to be a solder. They injured themselves or told false stories about their health situation. The army surgeons tried to recognize draft dodgers. Examination of the documents written by the doctors shows that it was not easy to recognize draft dodgers and surgeons had to face many problems. This suggests that there would have been a number of draft dodgers who in escaping conscription and that the government could not completely control people in Japan.

Recently the role of "media frames" in the process of making news has become a focus of attention. According to Gitlin (1980), <i>media frames are persistent patterns of cognition, interpretation, and presentation, of selection, emphasis, and exclusion</i>. It is important for us as audience to recognize not only that the news is not "<i>a mirror of society</i>" but also that the news is made through media frames. Besides, we must examine what the media frames are. In this paper, I intend to define and characterize the nature and function of media frames by analyzing the news on "All Five Walks" in the Summer High School Baseball Tournament in 1992.

The purpose of this paper is to elucidate one aspect of the scholastic socialization. This is the socialization through which Kindergartners are oriented to the methodology of 'A and Bs attending to the same thing' as a scholastic skill. This paper demonstrates that two respective designs of two interaction formats, 'adjacency pair' and 'adjacency triple', are used to cohort the kindergartners, make the teacher's and kindergartners' states facing each other, and then, achieve the methodology of 'A and Bs attending to the same thing'. These procedures are describable as one aspect of the scholastic socialization that orients kindergartners to a skill mainly required in schools.

By concentrating on the process of making something by hand, this paper considers what kind of value handmade "charm-goods" had for girls in Japan's 1980s boom of "fortune-telling & charm." It has been said that "charm-goods" in the 1980s "magic-religious popular culture" gave girls their own sense of identity with a world-view that was worthy of them, but with "charm-goods" the fact that they were made by hand has been regarded as being important. This second element seems to have demanded from girls a more active commitment to "fortune-telling and charm." Through analyzing the articles of "My Birthday," which is well known as a representative "fortune-telling & charm" magazine for girls, I clarify that "charm-goods" and their being made by hand helped girls to get involved in and improve their real-life communication skills.

This article clarifies the relationships between three academic disciplines through a text mining analysis of journals of sociology, the sociology of education, and pedagogy. Through analyses of word frequency and the extent of the similarity among these journals, results reveal that these three disciplines are different in complicated and multi-dimensional ways in terms of their viewpoints and concepts. This article proposes the concept of content-related differentiation for these disciplines.

This paper considers differentiated scientific disciplines using the concept of functional differentiation. According to social systems theory, society has evolved to a state in which it consists of a variety of large communication systems that can be identified by the functions they perform. The goal of this paper is to show that science is structured in the same way. Modern science is characterized by functional differentiation.

The purpose of this paper is to examine how the so-called "Liberal" position arose concerning the issue of ethnic minorities in 1960s America. Some earlier research has seen "Liberal" as only the opposition to "Conservative", and explained that the "Liberal" position in America was established in the presidential election of 1964 in which the main issue was civil rights policy. According to such research, as the civil rights movement became radical in the late 1960s, the "Liberal" began to collapse. But in this paper, to grasp the "Liberal" more appropriately, I focus on the relation and difference between "majority" and "minority" inside the "Liberal", and examine how "Liberals in the majority" responded to claims of minority. From this perspective, I will make it clear the radicalization of civil rights movement was not the beginning of the collapse of the "Liberal" but rather the critical momentum for the establishment of "Liberals in the majority", as it were a "Liberal Majority".

In 1993, the Japan Epilepsy Association criticized Tsutsui Yasutaka's novel "Robot Police" as discriminatory to epileptics, and sought to have it from a textbook published by Kadokawa Publishing. In response to the criticism, he declared a "Writing Strike" and appealed for freedom of expression. This declaration drew public attention, and raised a storm of controversy. The aim of this paper is to explicate the divergence of problem setting in the controversy. First, I will show that the declaration was situated in the context of victim contest. Then, I will demonstrate that the context was prepared through the shift of roles in the early stages of the controversy. Finally, I will present a rhetorical analysis of how the shift of roles occurred in the responsive context of the controversy.

"Karo-Jisatsu" (suicide induced by overwork) has often been connected to criticisms of Japanese society for its self-sacrificing labor culture and merciless economics. This argument merely repeats the legal and critical discourse of "Karo-Jisatsu" and voids the legal fiction of individuals with a responsibility to be critical of society. Moreover, at the level of practice, neither the cancelling of the fiction nor the issue of social criticism has been pursued. Contrary to the previous seemingly "sociological" explanations, our society neither operates strictly nor abandons easily the modern fiction of "intention". The sociology of suicide should illuminate the various aspects of the fiction in our society.

This paper clarifies how "trust" has been described in Japanese magazine articles of three domains—medicine education, and politics. By using the National Diet Library Online Public Access Catalog, I collected the magazine articles that included "trust" in the article title. I classified these articles on the basis of the object of trust: person, system, or thing. Analysis of these articles revealed the following: (1) the earlier the subject of trust started appearing in a domain, the lower was the trust shown in that domain currently, and (2) before and after the turn of the century, the proportion change of the number of the classified articles was different in each the domain. In conclusion, to investigate the usage of trust is to examin the imagination of the sources of social order in the domain.

This paper's purpose is to examine the potential of the network concept advanced by Manuel Castells. Various commentators have already criticized the network concept of Castells for its ambiguity. But the ambiguity of his concept, especially its abstract and formal character, has important implications. Network as a social form can be distinguished from other forms (hierarchy, market, and community), but, on the other this form's logic can also connote those forms as well. In other words network as logic can be located in a metaperspective as it operates on other social forms and as it generates alternative forms. A network can be expected to have a great potential to produce "timeless time" and "space of flow". And this high reflexivity of the network reveals the network society as an open system.
