Realizing the possibility suggested by Hardouin [Iterative q-difference Galois theory, J. Reine Angew. Math.644 (2010) 101–144], we show that her own Picard–Vessiot (PV) theory for iterative q-difference rings is covered by the (consequently, more general) framework, settled by Amano and Masuoka [Picard–Vessiot extensions of artinian simple module algebras, J. Algebra285 (2005) 743–767], of artinian simple module algebras over a cocommutative pointed Hopf algebra. An essential point is to represent iterative q-difference modules over an iterative q-difference ring R, by modules over a certain cocommutative ×R-bialgebra. Recall that the notion of ×R-bialgebras was defined by Sweedler [Groups of simple algebras, Publ. Math. Inst. Hautes Études Sci.44 (1974) 79–189], as a generalization of bialgebras.

For a location-scale parameter family of distributions with a finite support, a sequential confidence interval with a fixed width is obtained for the location parameter, and its asymptotic consistency and efficiency are shown. Some comparisons with the Chow-Robbins procedure are also done.

BackgroundWhile β-blockers can be effective in controlling tachyarrhythmias after pediatric cardiac surgery, a negative inotropic influence sometimes complicates their use. Landiolol hydrochloride is a novel, ultra-short-acting β-blocker recently developed in Japan. The drug has higher β1:β2 selectivity ratio and a less negative inotropic effect. This study retrospectively evaluates the efficacy and safety of landiolol in the management of tachyarrhythmias after pediatric cardiac surgery.MethodsA retrospective analysis was performed on 312 consecutive patients undergoing surgery for congenital heart disease. Twelve patients were treated with landiolol for critical tachyarrhythmia. The mean age of patients was 28.7 ± 10.6 months. Five junctional ectopic tachycardia, 2 atrial flutters, 1 paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, 1 atrial fibrillation, 1 atrioventricular reciprocating tachycardia with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and 2 excessive sinus tachycardia were treated.ResultsThe mean loading and maintenance doses were 11.3 ± 4.0 and 6.8 ± 0.9 μg/kg per minute, respectively. Rate control was achieved in all patients. Landiolol reduced the heart rate from 169.7 ± 11.4 to 127.7 ± 7.5 beats per minute (p < 0.05) while blood pressure did not significantly change. Tachyarrhythmias were converted to sinus rhythm in 70.0% of the cases and the average time needed to achieve heart rate reduction was 2.3 ± 0.5 hours.ConclusionsLandiolol was efficacious in treating tachyarrhythmia in pediatric cardiac surgery. The desired negative chronotropic effect was achieved without significant hemodynamic compromise. The ultra-short half-life of landiolol provided rapid dose manipulation. This study suggests that landiolol is a promising option for the management of postoperative tachyarrhythmias in pediatric patients.

The coherent modulation of electronic and vibrational nonlinearities in atoms and molecular gases by intense few-cycle pulses has been used for high-harmonic generation in the soft x-ray and attosecond regime, as well as for Raman frequency combs that span multiple octaves from the terahertz to petahertz frequency regions. In principle, similar high-order nonlinear processes can be excited efficiently in solids and liquids on account of their high nonlinear polarizability densities. In this paper, we demonstrate the phononic modulation of the optical index of Si and GaAs for excitation and probing near their direct band gaps, respectively at ~3.4 and ~3.0 eV. The large amplitude coherent longitudinal optical (LO) polarization due to the excitation of LO phonons of Si (001) and LO phonon–plasmon coupled modes in GaAs (001) excited by 10 fs laser pulses induces effective amplitude and phase modulation of the reflected probe light. The combined action of the amplitude and phase modulation in Si and GaAs generates phonon frequency combs with more than 100 and 60 THz bandwidth, respectively.

We have used a femtosecond pump-probe impulsive Raman technique to explore the polarization dependence of coherent optical phonons in highly purified and aligned semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Coherent phonon spectra for the radial breathing modes (RBMs) exhibit a different monochromatic frequency between the film and solution samples, indicating the presence of differing exciton excitation processes. By varying the polarization of the incident pump beam on the aligned SWCNT film, we found that the anisotropy of the coherent RBM excitation depends on the laser wavelength, which we consider to be associated with the resonant and off-resonant behavior of RBM excitation.
