From the fruits of Arctium lappa L. (Japanease name"goboshi, ""akujitsu, "or "dairikishi"), two new sesquilignan derivatives, AL-D and AL-F, were isolated along with arctin, arctigenin, and matairesinol. From spectroscopic and chemical investigations, the structure of AL-D was elucidated as 2-[2-(3-methoxy-4-hydroxy) phenyl-3-hydroxymethyl-7-methoxy-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-5-yl] methyl-3-(3-methoxy-4-hydroxy)-benzyl-buthyrolactone [I] or 2-(3-methoxy-4-hydroxy) benzyl-3-[2-(3-methoxy-4-hydroxy)-phenyl-3-hydroxymethyl-7-methoxy-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-5-yl] methyl-buthyrolactone [II]. AL-F was found to be a stereoisomer of AL-D.

Chemically modified compounds of glycyrrhizin have been synthesized and evaluated for their inhibitory effect on the replication of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). Among them, the 11-deoxo compound having a heteroannular diene structure at the C and D rings proved as active against HIV-1 as glycyrrhizin in MT-4 and MOLT-4 cells. It completely inhibited HIV-1-induced cytopathogenicity in both cell lines at a concentration of 0.16mM. The compound was also effective against HSV-1 with a 50% inhibitory concentration of 0.5μM.

Some Chinese herbal prescriptions employed for a syndrome expressed in oriental medical concept as chest paralysis (Kyohi) and heartache (Shintsu) are thought to be effective for angina pectoris. We investigated the effects of 5 Chinese medicinal prescriptions, Kuolon-Xiebai-Banxia Tang (Karo-gaihaku-hange-to), Guizhi-Shenjiang-Zhishi Tang (Keishi-shokyc-kijitsu-to), Jupi-Zhishi-Shenjiang Tang (Kippi-kijitsu-shokyo-to), Renshen Tang (Ninjin-to) and Guizhi-Renshen Tang (Keishi-ninjin-to) and 6 individual herbs contained in these prescriptions on a human platelet aggregation induced by 2 μM ADP. All the prescriptions mentioned above showed a strong inhibitory effect in the secondary wave aggregation, while Jupi-Zhishi-Shenjiang Tang and Guizhi-Renshen Tang gave less effect in the primary wave aggregation. Of these herbs, Shenjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Siccatum Rhizoma) and Renshen (Ginseng Radix) showed a strong inhibitory effect, while Jupi (Aurantii Nobilis Pericarpium) promoted the primary wave aggregation. Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix) and Baizhu (Atractyloides Rhizoma) showed no activity.
