ハチ毒免疫療法は刺咬症による毒素に対する致死的な反応の可能性を減弱させる。ハチ毒免疫療法は安定化のためにヒトアルブミンが必要である。本症例はハチ毒免疫療法の最中にアナフィラキシーを発症したラブラドールレトリーバーの1例である。比内試験によりヒトアルブミンに対する継続的な感作が認められた。ハチ毒免疫療法がヒトアルブミンに対する感作のリスク因子であるかについて調べるため,ハチ毒免疫療法が施された4頭の犬と6頭の健常犬,6頭のアトピー犬に比内試験を行った。1頭の犬がヒトアルブミンに対して反応を示した。この犬はハチ毒免疫療法で治療されているが臨床症状は示していない。ヒトアルブミンを含むハチ毒免疫療法がこのタンパクに対する感作とアナフィラキシーを起こす可能性がある。

The activity of nitrogen fixation measured by acetylene reduction was examined in chemosynthetic microbial mats at 72–75°C in slightly-alkaline sulfidic hot springs in Nakabusa, Japan. Nitrogenase activity markedly varied from sampling to sampling. Nitrogenase activity did not correlate with methane production, but was detected in samples showing methane production levels less than the maximum amount, indicating a possible redox dependency of nitrogenase activity. Nitrogenase activity was not affected by 2-bromo-ethane sulfonate, an inhibitor of methanogenesis. However, it was inhibited by the addition of molybdate, an inhibitor of sulfate reduction and sulfur disproportionation, suggesting the involvement of sulfate-reducing or sulfur-disproportionating organisms. Nitrogenase activity was affected by different O2 concentrations in the gas phase, again supporting the hypothesis of a redox potential dependency, and was decreased by the dispersion of mats with a homogenizer. The loss of activity that occurred from dispersion was partially recovered by the addition of H2, sulfate, and carbon dioxide. These results suggested that the observed activity of nitrogen fixation was related to chemoautotrophic sulfate reducers, and fixation may be active in a limited range of ambient redox potential. Since thermophilic chemosynthetic communities may resemble ancient microbial communities before the appearance of photosynthesis, the present results may be useful when considering the ancient nitrogen cycle on earth.

Chemosynthetic microbial communities develop and form dense cell aggregates in slightly alkaline sulfidic hot springs in the temperature range of 70–86°C at Nakabusa, Japan. Nitrogenase activity has recently been detected in the microbial communities collected. To identify possible members capable of nitrogen fixation, we examined the diversities of 16S rRNA and nitrogenase reductase (NifH) gene sequences in four types of chemosynthetic communities with visually different colors and thicknesses. The results of a 16S rRNA gene analysis indicated that all four microbial communities had similar bacterial constituents; the phylum Aquificae was the dominant member, followed in abundance by Thermodesulfobacteria, Firmicutes, and Thermotogae. Most of the NifH sequences were related to sequences reported in hydrothermal vents and terrestrial hot springs. The results of a phylogenetic analysis of NifH sequences revealed diversity in this gene among the communities collected, distributed within 7 phylogenetic groups. NifH sequences affiliated with Aquificae (Hydrogenobacter/Thermocrinis) and Firmicutes (Caldicellulosiruptor) were abundant. At least two different energy metabolic pathways appeared to be related to nitrogen fixation in the communities analyzed; aerobic sulfur/hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria in Aquificae and fermentative bacteria in Firmicutes. The metabolic characteristics of these two dominant phyla differed from those previously inferred from nitrogenase activity assays on chemosynthetic communities, which were associated with hydrogen-dependent autotrophic sulfate reduction. These assays may correspond to the observed NifH sequences that are distantly related to the known species of Thermodesulfovibrio sp. (Nitrospirae) detected in the present study. The activities of nitrogen-fixing organisms in communities may depend on redox states as well as the availability of electron donors, acceptors, and carbon sources.

本研究では、fMRIと脳波 (EEG) を組み合わせたEEG-fMRIを用い、fMRIの有する高い空間分解能を活かした解析に加え、脳波の有する高い時間分解能生を活かした解析を組み合わせて、ヒトの高次脳機能神経回路や精神症状をサブミリセカンドで観察出来るシステムを構築した。我々の解析方法を用いることで、作業記憶課題を用いた脳活動の観察では、認知課題中に1秒未満で連続的に変化する脳活動を観察可能であった。またてんかん活動を観察しつつ同定した焦点は、手術により確認したそれと良く一致していた。我々の開発した解析手法は、高い空間分解能で1秒未満の連続的な脳活動変化を捉えられる。

In a recent article [Yamamoto and Ikuta: J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 68 (1999) 2602] state that the true origin of negative differential conductivity (NDC) has never been shown, in apparent contradiction of claims made in earlier papers [Z. Lj et al..: Aust. J. Phys. 37 (1984) 23; R. E. Robson: ibid. 37 (1984) 35]. In the present paper, we argue that the true origin of NDC has indeed been explained satisfactorily, and present a comprehensive range of calculations for a number of cases, demonstrating the effectiveness of momentum transfer theory [Hot electron transport in semiconductors (Springer, Berlin, 1985) p. 82] for understanding NDC from both a qualitative and quantitative perspective.

We report here on the theoretical interpretation of results related to compression experiments performed on the University of Rochester's four beam laser system. The experimental results show volume reduction on the order of 300 with compressed electron temperatures on the order of 1 KeV, critical surface temperatures also about 1 KeV and a density plateau in the vicinity of the critical surface. The theoretical work focusses on the effect of absorption time history, of reduced flux limits and of variation of the suprathermal electron distribution on the replication of these experiments.

Through immuno-suppression, aflatoxins could affect drug and vaccine efficacy. Such effects have not been evaluated in treatment of many diseases including trypanosomiasis. We assessed the effect of aflatoxin B1 on the efficacy of suramin, the drug used for treatment of early stage sleeping sickness, in a murine model. Mice were fed daily on a diet containing 0.50 mg aflatoxin/kg body weight or a placebo. They were infected with Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense on day 7 post-aflatoxin exposure and then treated with one of 6 different doses of suramin (4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 and 6.5 mg/kg body weight) at the onset of parasitemia. The mice were fed on aflatoxin diet for 30 days and the curative dose values (CD50, 75, and 90) computed and compared using a logistic linear regression model. Aflatoxin B1 induced transient protection of the host against T. b. rhodesiense infection and a consistent increase in suramin CD values in the mice suggesting reduced drug efficacy. Aflatoxicosis hindered curative treatment of T. b. rhodesiense infection in mice, and may contribute to reduced efficacy of suramin during treatment of sleeping sickness in man.

Allergic reactions to contrast media are a frequently reported complication of coronary angiography. The majority of patients experience mild, self-limited episodes, but in rare cases patients may experience severe, persistent symptoms. A strategy of premedication with corticosteroids and anti-histamines and an optimal selection of contrast agent is almost always successful in averting contrast reactions, yet a select few patients will continue to have breakthrough events. This is a case of recurrent, severe allergy to contrast media despite standard precautions complicating the treatment of non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). Our patient was successfully managed with a strategy of rapid desensitization to iodinated contrast media achieved by administering progressively incremental doses of the media.

α'-SiAlON containing Sr, having a large ionic radius, was obtained by hot-pressing. Sr was accommodated in α'-SiAlON in conjunction with Y. The effect of adding Sr to Y-α'-SiAlON on thermal conductivity and mechanical properties was studied. Thermal conductivity decreased from 11.9 W/m・K to 6.2 W/m・K with increasing addition of Sr, due to increasing of phonon scattering both in the lattice and at the grain boundary. Bending strength increased from 460 MPa to 860 MPa with increasing addition of Sr. The increase in bending strength can be associated with grain size refinement and fracture toughness. Fracture toughness also increased with increasing addition of Sr.

On July 18, 1997, EPA promulgated new standards for fine particles, with PM2.5 as the indicator (15μg/m3, annual average; 65μg/m3, 24-hour average). EPA also retained the existing levels of the PM10 standards (50μg/m3, annual average; 150μg/m3, 24-hour average) to pro-. tect against exposure to coarse particles. This decision was based on an extensive review of the scientific information regarding effects of PM. The upper 50% cut point of 10μm was chosen because it provides a measure of thoracic particles (i.e., those particles entering the lung). The 50% cut point 2.5μm was chosen to divide thoracic particles into fine and course particles because of their differences in sources, composition, and properties (chemical, physical, and biological). The time required for determining compliance or noncompliance with the revised PM standards is such that the next periodic review of the PM standards (required every 5 years) will take place before new particle control measures will be required. Monitoring requirements for determining compliance and research needed for the next review have been identified by EPA. Research needs include improved measurement techniques for finemode particles.
