In this work, we built ultrasonic disc-shaped transducer for targeted neuromodulation with the addition of a solid axicon lens based on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) interface. We made a numerical and experimental characterization of its acoustic field. The motor cortex of CF-1 mice was stimulated, through the skin and skull into the intact brain, with low-intensity pulsed ultrasound. Evoked muscle responses in different body segments were clearly observed, including hindlimb, forelimb, and tail. Axicon lens affixed on the face of the transducer makes possible a targeted modulation of the motor cortex by pulsed ultrasound, inducing muscle contraction in a specific body segment. In this approach, the lateral and axial spatial resolution is comparable to spherical segment ultrasound transducers, but with a shorter focal length. Thus, ultrasound axicon looks attractive to investigate the functional contributions of fine-grained spatial structures in the brain.

The Philippine Earthquake (Ms=7.8) broke out in July 16, 1990 along the Philippine Fault in Central Luzon. The Philippine Fault is seismically very active and large earthquakes of M 7 class have occurred during this century along this fault. However large earthquakes have not taken place along the active traces of the fault in the Central Luzon during this century, while two large historical earthquakes occurred along its southern trace in 1645 and its northern trace in 1796. Therefore it is considered that the 1990 earthquake was caused by the surface faulting in the seismic (aseismic) gap along the Philippine Fault.<BR>The total length of the surface fault is over 120 km and the fault is divided into two segments by the major bend near Rizal. The surface fault is rather straight and linear and general orientation of the northern segment is N 25 W and the southern segment N40W. Left-lateral displacement is dominant along most of the fault traces and the maximum horizontal displacement is about 6 m in the 60-km-long northern segment and the maximum vertical displacement is 2.0 min the 50-km-long southern section. Sense of vertical displacement changes in places and is consistent with the sense of the displacement along the pre-existing active fault traces. Average displacement along the northern segment is 5-6 m, while 2-3 m along the southern segment.<BR>Along most of the surface fault, ruptures appear exactly along the pre-existing active fault traces. Offsets of roads, foot-pass, streams are common earthquake-induced features. Local extensional and compressional jog forms related to slight change in fault strike creates characteristic features such as depressions, trenches, mole tracks, bulges etc.<BR>The rupture propagated bilaterally northward and southward from hypocenter east of Bongabon near the major bend. The source process of the earthquake deduced from the slip distribution along the surface fault from the epicenter well coincides with that deduced seismologically from the source time function.

[Purpose] To demonstrate the reduction of symptoms related to Parkinson’s disease by improvement in posture. [Participant and Methods] A 59-year-old male patient presented with a prior diagnosis of Parkinson’s. Symptoms included a resting right hand tremor, intermittent ‘freezing episodes’ with gait, mild ataxia with shuffling on toes and bradykinesia assisted with a cane, as well as low back pain and right knee pain. Radiography revealed gross postural and spine deformity. The patient received Chiropractic BioPhysics care including mirror image exercises, spinal traction, spinal adjustments as well as gait rehabilitation. [Results] After 38 treatments over 5 months, the patient had significant improvements in posture alignment as well as gait, balance, hand tremors, low back and knee pains and SF-36 values. A 21 month follow-up revealed the patient had remained essentially well and the initial postural improvements were maintained. [Conclusion] This case demonstrates improvement of various symptoms in a patient with Parkinson’s disease. Since poor posture is a long known clinical manifestation of this disorder, it is proposed that the improvement of posture in these patients may lead to improved outcomes. X-ray use in the diagnosis and management in those with spine deformity is safe and not carcinogenic.

The motions of the Earth's magnetic dip poles and geomagnetic poles over the past 400 years are investigated. In addition, relations are sought between geomagnetic and virtual geomagnetic poles over historic times.Since 1750, the secular motion of the dip poles along their paths has been counterclockwise. During this century this secular motion has been directed in a northwest direction with an average velocity of -11km per year for the north dip pole and -10km per year for the south dip pole. In 1980, the north dip pole was located at 77.3°N and 101.8°W in the Canadian Archipelago, and the south dip pole at 65.6°S and 139.4°E just off mainland Antarctica.In addition to its secular motion, each dip pole undergoes a diurnal motion caused by ionospheric current systems. This motion, which is clockwise in the north and anticlockwise in the south, may result in a displacement from the unperturbed position of 65km and 30km respectively, on an average disturbed day.The average velocity of the north geomagnetic pole during this century is -1km per year in a northwest direction. It is about a magnitude less for the virtual geomagnetic pole. Both the geomagnetic and virtual geomagnetic pole paths display a clockwise rotation.There is a great deal of uncertainty in our attempt to use virtual geomagnetic poles to extend the geomagnetic pole path back in time to -7500 B. C. Much of this uncertainty is due to the sparse distribution of archeomagnetic measurements at a given epoch.

A 12-year-old intact male Welsh Corgi was presented with enlargement of the right scrotum. Both testicles were surgically removed and histopathologically examined. On gross examination, white nodules were found in the epididymis and ductus deferens. Histopathologically, the nodules developed continuously from the tunica vaginalis testis of the right scrotum and consisted of spindle-shaped neoplastic cells that invaded the surrounding tissue. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were diffusely positive for vimentin, cytokeratin and Wilms tumor-1 (WT-1). Based on these findings, the tumor was diagnosed as sarcomatoid mesothelioma. The dog presented with respiratory distress 122 days after surgery and clinical examination found multiple metastatic lesions in the lung, abdominal lymph nodes and peritoneum. The dog died 144 days after surgery due to disease progression.

The conditional probability, P (s|x), is a statement of the probability that the event, s, will occur given prior knowledge for the value of x. If x is given and if s is randomly distributed, then an empirical approximation of the true conditional probability can be computed by the application of Bayes' Theorem. Here s represents one of two structural classes, either ordered, so, or disordered, sd, and x represents an attribute value calculated over a window of 21 amino-acids. Plots of P (slx) versus x provide information about the correlation between the given sequence attribute and disorder or order. These conditional probability plots allow quantitative comparisons between individual attributes for their ability to discriminate between order and disorder states. Using such quantitative comparisons, 38 different sequence attributes have been rank-ordered. Attributes based on cysteine, the aromatics, flexible tendencies, and charge were found to be the best attributes for distinguishing order and disorder among those tested so far.

Noroviruses are the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis and foodborne disease in the United States (U.S.). About 1 in 5 reported norovirus outbreaks are spread through foodborne transmission, presenting opportunities for prevention. We describe the epidemiology of U.S. foodborne norovirus outbreaks reported to national surveillance systems, including differences between genotypes. Foodborne outbreaks that occurred during August 2009–July 2015 with norovirus reported as a single confirmed etiology to the National Outbreak Reporting System (NORS) were matched with outbreaks reported to CaliciNet, a U.S. laboratory norovirus outbreak surveillance network. We analyzed these matched outbreaks stratified by genotype for epidemiologic characteristics, including setting, size and duration, health outcomes of case-patients, implicated food, and outbreak contributing factors. Four hundred ninety-three confirmed foodborne norovirus outbreaks were reported in both NORS and CaliciNet. The most common norovirus genotypes reported were GII.4 (52%), GII.6 (9%), and GI.3 (8%). Compared to non-GII.4 outbreaks, GII.4 outbreaks had higher hospitalization rates (12.8 vs. 4.8 per 1,000 cases, P < 0.01). While contaminated foods were identified and reported in only 35% of outbreaks, molluscan shellfish (4% overall) were more often implicated in non-GII.4 outbreaks than in GII.4 outbreaks (7% vs. 1%, P = 0.04). Of the 240 outbreaks reporting at least one contributing factor, food workers were implicated as the source of contamination in 182 (76%), with no difference between GII.4 and non-GII.4 (73% vs 79%, P = 0.3). Foodborne norovirus outbreaks are frequently reported in the U.S., most of which are caused by GII.4 noroviruses. Viruses of this genotype are associated with higher rates of hospitalization; non-GII.4 noroviruses are more frequently associated with contaminated molluscan shellfish. These surveillance data highlight the diversity of noroviruses causing foodborne disease and can help guide appropriate food safety interventions, including worker hygiene, improved food handling and preparation, and further development of norovirus vaccines.

A protective and adherent rust layer develops on weathering steels during outdoor exposure. This layer acts as a barrier which slows further corrosion, thus enabling weathering steel to be used in structural applications without painting. To aid in understanding the mechanism of protective rust formation, studies have been made on the composition and microstructure of these layers. The present study was jointly conducted on Japanese weathering steel exposed in the industrial environment of Amagasaki, and US weathering steel exposed in the industrial environment of Bethlehem. The rust layers were studied by use of optical microscopy, electron microscopy with X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The results of this collaboration show that, in general, the rust layers formed during long-term exposure are composed of one or more alternating layers of goethite and lepidocrocite, with scattered patches of maghemite and/or magnetite.

A hard palate mass was surgically removed from an Australian green tree frog (Litoria caerulea) and examined pathologically. The tumor consisted of sheets of small cells arranged in a tubular structure and cords or rosettes with fibrovascular stroma. Immunohistochemically, neoplastic cells were diffusely positive for cytokeratin and neuron-specific enolase and partially positive for S-100 and doublecortin. These findings indicate that the tumor originated from the neuroectodermal tissue. Based on these findings, the tumor was classified as a neuromastoma (neuroepithelioma). Sensory cells located in the hard palate of the frog were considered to be the origin of the tumor. The frog died after going through 3 surgeries and experiencing difficulties closing its mouth.

モーリシャスで採集した新種<I>Plectranthias pelicieri</I>を記載した.本種は他の種から, 前鯛蓋骨下縁に3本の前向棘があることで区別できる (外見で見にくい場合には触れると分かる).その他に背鰭はX, 16-17で細長い皮弁が数本の中程の長い棘の後端にある, 胸鰭は13軟条で全て不分枝, 側線は完全で側線鱗は29, 赤と黄の地に青から白の横縞の入る体色などの特徴がある.<BR>また生時の色彩が特徴なので, <I>P. gardineri</I> (Regan, 1908) のカラー写真を初掲載した.
