Considering the fact that most problems in distribution lines are ground faults, we think that the technology to distinguish the causes in the distribution lines will be very useful in preventing faults beforehand or, at least finding any problems at an early stage. We analysed the waveforms of ground faults which were collected from data concerning problems in the districution lines and ground fault experiment. We then studied the possibility of technology which could predict classified groups drawn from the scale of Io (the waveform of ground fault's current) and Vo (the waveform of ground fault's voltage), and both of them in the ground faults. The results demonstrated that Io could be classified into three groups, that is, leaking ground faults are sine curve shaped, gap discharge ground faults are triangular and intermittent discharge ground faults are needle shaped. Also we calculated simulated equivalent impedance of the causes of ground faults by EMTP. Furthermore, we investigated the influence coused by the condition of the distribution lines. With these results, we proposed a technique which could predict the cause of problems in ground faults.

We have developed a new method to measure an attenuation characteristic of a power cable in high frequency range. The method numerically obtains an attenuation characteristic by suppressing an influence of reflections caused by impedance mismatching. The correction equations are derived from the relation of forward waves and backward waves with multiple reflections in the cable.

Flicker may be caused by “frequency feedback method with step injection of reactive power” installed in PCS which is generally used as grid-connected inverter in Japan. Therefore, in this paper, characteristics of the flicker were investigated by experiments with actual PCS in single phase circuit. Furthermore, effective means for suppressing the flicker was considered by taking the cause of occurrence of flicker into account. Moreover, it was clarified the differences among PCSs on flicker using multiple actual PCSs. In conclusion, gain of frequency feedback function should be reduced as one of effective means to avoid flicker.

The audible noise which is produced by corona discharge from transmission line conductors is composed of two major components, namely “hum noise” and “random noise”. Hum noise has a frequency of twice the power line frequency and is generated primarily in rain, fog, and highly humid environments. It is one of the major factors affecting conductor design of transmission lines for voltages above 500kV and it is very important to predict level of hum noise near transmission lines. In this paper, through comparison between measured values in the UHV Akagi test line and that using corona cage, an experimental prediction method of hum noise in rain condition is proposed.

In this paper, we show the result of building and simulating a model that can optimally operate electric power supply by a system combining Photovoltaic Power Generation (PV) and Storage Battery (BT), mainly for residential customers. Especially focusing attention on BTs, by solving the objective function that minimizes electricity charges of customers by using the internal temperature and life characteristics of the storage battery as constraint conditions, an optimal solution is obtained. Compared with the case where the constraint condition of the storage battery is not taken into consideration, although the electricity charge increases, it is evaluated that the system can be used stably for a long time. Also, in a system that combines PV and BT, DC power bus (DC Bus) is controlled to a constant value for the purpose of supplying electric power to DC load and stable power supply to AC load.

This paper presents an evaluation of economical capacity of storage batteries equipped with residential PV systems. In around 2019, many of power companies' ten-year contracts with PV system owners will come to expire, pushing down the selling price of PV generated energy. This, if combined with a declining battery price, would make it more economical to self-consume PV generated energy than selling the electricity to the utilities. The authors explore the optimized storage battery capacity and charge-discharge pattern by using load and PV output data of 200 houses, and by linear programming. Results show 5.8kWh battery is suitable for an average house with 4.5kW PV system when the battery system price is about ¥60,000/kWh. The authors analyze the daily storage start timing's impact on reverse power which affects power system operation, the optimum combination of PV and battery capacity, and each house's deciding factors for optimum storage capacity and so on.

This paper presents economic evaluation of storage battery systems which increase the self-use of PV output at houses and buildings. The selling price of PV generated energy is decreasing. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) can increase the self-use of PV output, and decrease the volume of buying electric power. So, the introduction of BESS to houses and buildings equipped with PV systems will be economical when the price of BESS is decreased enough. Authors investigated the optimum BESS capacity and hourly charge-discharge pattern for a year, then evaluated annual cost. Daily load pattern of each house and building, and time-of-use electric rates affect the conditions to make BESS cost-effective. Such conditions are shown in this paper.

In this paper we examine the merits that a practical photovoltaic system combining photovoltaic generation with storage batteries would provide if used in ordinary residences. Various configurations and operation methods could be envisaged for such a system. In this research we examined the optimal battery capacity, operation methods, and economic effects for a system emphasizing economical merits for the user. We first calculated the hourly amount of photovoltaic generated electricity each month, and used data on average load patterns from actual measurements to calculate battery capacity. Next, taking battery capacity and photovoltaic module capacity/price as parameters, we calculated and evaluated the economic merits for ordinary residences. The results showed that the optimal battery capacity for combination with 3 or 5 kW photovoltaic generation is around 10 kWh, and that a combined system provides merits even though it entails higher photovoltaic module costs than the use of photovoltaic generation alone.

Recently the wind power generation has attracted special interest and many wind power stations are being in service in the world. In the wind power stations, induction machines are mostly used as a generator. Since induction machines can become unstable during a fault in power system, like a step-out of synchronous machines, it is important to analyze the stability of power system including wind generators. This paper presents a consideration on the stability of induction generators from a point of view of voltage stability.

Synchronous switching controller (SSC) for gas circuit breakers (GCB) has been developed. SSC is able to close and open a GCB at the appropriate point on wave for minimizing the switching surges. This paper proposes the new synchronous switching algorithm to minimize the control delay time, and the control error for the desired point on wave. New algorithm for (1) detecting voltage and current zero crossing points and (2) predicting the next operation time of GCB is introduced. 145kV GCB with SSC built in new algorithm has been tested several condition. SSC performed well from-30 degrees C to 60 degrees C at various control voltage condition and the standard deviation from the taget phase is within 0.5msec. And the closing at two target points with voltage zero and peak works well in a capacitive load circuit at 145kV.

Battery Energy Storage system (BESS) is prospective energy storage in Smart Grid and Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) composed of two different kinds of battery is also studied to achieve better performance and lower cost than single kind of BESS. The cost issue, however, has not been evaluated explicitly so far. On the other hand, BESS is studied and expected for ancillary service although HESS has not been applied to frequency control in power system. This paper focuses on HESS application to frequency control and its economic analysis. In this paper, the important battery characteristics in the application to power system are introduced and two kinds of HESS are evaluated in terms of their cost when they are applied to frequency control. In addition, the cost is analyzed for when HESS is used for Peak Shift as well as frequency control.

It has been pointed out that a very strong electromagnetic field is induced occasionally along aerial power lines located near a medium wave (MW) broadcasting station, and the construction and the maintenance of power lines are sometimes endangered. We have presented a method to predict a dangerous span before the construction and the maintenance, and a use of a loading of appropriate inductor to decrease the induced field the case where the resonant loop is composed of three power lines, i.e., a top conductor, a middle conductor and a bottom conductor and part of towers. In this paper, the effect of loading inductor for the case that the resonant loop includes a ground wire is presented. Since the ground wire is connected directly to the tower, the inductor can not be loaded into the ground wire. It is shown that the field strength in the vicinity of three power lines can be suppressed by loading the inductor to three power cables each. However, the field in the vicinity of the ground wire can not be suppressed significantly. Measured values of the field strength in the vicinity of the bottom conductor is presented to confirm the suppression effect.

This paper describes an application of a neural network for estimating the ground rainfall from radar echo data. A neural network system for this purpose is developed through a case study on a dam for hydro-power plant located the upper district of the Ooi River in Central Japan. We use the neural network comprised of three layers; an input layer, a hidden layer and output layer. The input data to the neural network are any numebr of radar echo amount observed in each radar mesh and x-y-z coordinates showing its location.<br> The four types of neural networks with different number of input units are proposed and discussed the relative importance of the number of input data. It is found that the estimating system using the most simple neural network yields good results for rainfall distribution.
