By applying Scanning Nonlinear Dielectric Microscopy (SNDM), we succeeded in clarifying the position of the electrons/holes in the gate SiO2-Si3N4-SiO2 (ONO) film of the Metal-ONO-Semiconductor type flash memories, After the write-erase cycling operation, the electrons were found in the Si3N4 part of the ONO film. The holes, on the other hand, were found in the Si3N4 film as well as at the bottom of the SiO2 film. This indicates that the electrons and holes are apparently neutralized but exist separately. We also succeeded in clarifying that electrons exist in the poly-Si layer of the floating gate of a flash memory. We confirmed that SNDM is one of the most useful methods for observing the charge in flash memories.

Many bioengineering techniques to elucidate functions and characteristics of the skin have been developed until now. They measure the water content of stratum corneum, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin surface contour, mechanical properties, blood flow, sebum secretion rate, wrinkles, skin pigmentation and so on. These instrumental measurements are applied to validation of the efficacy of the cosmetics. Recently, a few in vivo bio-microscopes which non-invasively visualize horizontal image or vertical cross section of the skin with subcellular resolution, have been developed by using non-linear optics phenomenon. In this paper, I describe how skin measurement technologies have been changed with time and applied to cosmetic science, and also review in vivo bio-microscopes, they are optical coherence tomography (OCT), confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM), second harmonic generation (SHG) microscope, multi photon microscope (MPM), and coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS), which will be very helpful to examine the effects of the cosmetics on the skin.

We discuss the detection of a single spin by monitoring the tunneling current of the scanning tunneling microscope in the presence of a magnetic field. We have measured high frequency signals in the tunneling current of scanning tunneling microscopy for a submonolayer oxide thin film on the Si(111)-7×7 surface. We demonstrate that the signal is related to the Larmor precession of the electron spin associated with a dangling bond. The detected precession frequency possesses a broad distribution (line-width is comparable with that observed by conventional electron spin resonance) and a split near the maxima, both of which are attributed to the inhomogeneity of the g factor of a single spin. With site-specific measurement, we found that the spin signal was detected on the bright Si adatom in which oxygen atoms occupy the backbonds and weakened the metallic nature of the Si(111)-7×7 surface. The measured Larmor frequency corresponded to g∼2.00. On the other hand, no peak was detected on the dark adatom that is tied with an oxygen atom at the on-top site. This is due to the disappearance of the Si dangling bond through the chemical bond formation with the oxygen atom.

Mechanobiology is indispensable to all living creatures ranging from bacteria to human beings because every living thing continually experiences mechanical stimuli, not only exogenous but also endogenous, and responds appropriately to these stimuli. At the cellular level, there are three major mechanical stresses such as, stretch, shear stress and pressure. We have been intensively investigating systems to apply these mechanical environments to cells. Analysis of these responses is critical to understand the mechanisms and regulation of diverse physiological processes such as arterial and regulation, sensory perception, muscle development, and so on. Therefore, to study mechanobiology, we employed the polydimethysiloxane (PDMS) based technology, which is called soft lithography. In this paper, I am going to focus on biomedical and clinical applications of soft lithography.

本稿では,水・油・界面活性剤から成る系における自発的な界面運動について記述している。化学種の濃度が水相と油相間で非平衡である時,界面で様々な自励振動が見られる。今回は,その自励振動のうち,特に界面張力の周期的な増加に注目し,界面張力変化と界面運動との相関について説明した。界面張力が急激に増加すると接触角も急激に変化し,その結果界面張力間のバランスが崩れて運動が起こることを明らかにした。また,油水系では界面運動の駆動力は水相と油相間での界面活性剤の濃度勾配である。すなわち,等温条件下で化学的なエネルギーから機械的な運動を直接取り出している系であると言える。これは,例えば筋肉におけるエネルギー変換の機構と比較すると1)非平衡状態で起こり,2)熱エネルギーを介さない化学→機械エネルギーの直接変換系であり,3)空間的に非対称性を取り入れることによって運動方向の制御が可能である,といった点などにおいて共通性があり,生物の運動のメカニズムを探索する上で有効であると考えている。

The definition, property, application fields and purification facilities of ultra pure water are overviewed with the recent achievements in the technologies of water recycling and reductions in chemical consumption at first. Then the ion adsorption filter for removing ppt level of ionic impurities from ultra pure water, and the functionalized ultra pure water for precision cleaning in the fields of semiconductor and flat panel displays are described as the recent achievements in ultra pure water technology.

Recent topics of the chemical/biochemical micro/nanosystems using MEMS technologies and top down nanotechnologies are reviewed. This field is called Micro Total Analysis Systems (μTAS), the Lab-on-a-Chip and BioMEMS. The largest international academic conference of this field, Micro Total Analysis Systems (μTAS 2002), was held in Nara, Japan last November. A general trend in the conference is analyzed and described. Some noteworthy papers concerning the technologies of biomolecule handling and separation are picked up and introduced.

Analysis of individual particles containing nuclear materials in environmental samples gives important information on the origins. This paper describes analytical techniques of individual particles containing nuclear materials such as uranium and plutonium. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) combined with an X-ray detector, solid track detectors, and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) were used to identify particles containing uranium and/or plutonium in environmental samples. Isotope ratios for these particles were successfully determined with SIMS, thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) or inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The complementary use of these methods is effective to characterize individual particles rapidly, precisely and accurately.

It is important to understand the interfacial properties of the nanotube/metal contacts because, in the case of carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (NT-FETs), the FET action is dominated by the Schottky barrier formed at the interface of the source contact. In this study, we have studied the interfacial properties from the electrical characterization of NT-FETs. First, the conduction pass in the vicinity of the contact electrodes has been investigated using a multi-terminal device. Then, the relation between conduction property of NT-FETs and work function of the contact metals has been investigated. The interfacial band structure has been discussed in terms of the temperature dependence of the drain current.

Tandem-type solar cell is a multiple-layered solar cell to decrease thermal- and optical-energy losses. However, typical organic photovoltaics has been difficult to apply tandem photovoltaics because of the lack of organic photovoltaic cells with high open-circuit voltage (VOC) and/or near-infrared (NIR) photoelectric conversion. In this study, we constructed tandem-type organic photovoltaics using high VOC organometal halide perovskite solar cell and NIR dye-sensitized solar cell. Consequently, over 16% power conversion efficiency which is highest record among tandem-type organic photovoltaics has been accomplished.

The mechanism underlying the bioinertness of nonfouling self-assembled monolayers was investigated with protein adsorption experiments, platelet adhesion tests, and surface force measurements with an atomic force microscope. Our force measurements revealed strong repulsion operating between nonfouling SAMs in the range of 4 to 6 nm in PBS buffer solution. In addition, we found that the protein-adsorbing and cell-adhering SAMs did not exhibit such repulsion. We concluded that the repulsion originated from structured interfacial water molecules. Considering the correlation among the above results, we propose that the structured interfacial water with a thickness of 2 to 3 nm (half of the range of the repulsion observed in the surface force measurements) plays an important role in deterring proteins and cells from adsorption or adhesion.

電解複合研磨は, 昭和51年に開発した金属表面処理技術で, ステンレス鋼はもとより, アルミ, チタン, 銅などの非鉄金属まで, 加工変質層を伴わずに200~300Åまでの高品位鏡面を, 安定した品質で加工できる新しい技術である。従来の研磨法では, 限界にきているULSI製造プロセスのウルトラクリーン化や, 超, 極高真空システムの高性能化など, 先端ハイテク分野へ貢献しうる電解複合研磨技術について紹介する。

Two-dimensional grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (2D-GIXD) is one of the powerful methods to analyze crystal growth and structure of organic thin films. In this report, we show some experimental examples of 2D-GIXD measurements on organic semiconductor thin-films performed at SPring-8. First, polymorphic transformation of pentacene depending on film thickness observed by means of in-situ real-time 2D-GIXD is shown. Secondly, real-time observation of change in structure during thin-film growth of oligothiophenes by means of 2D-GIXD is shown. Finally, a result of crystal structure analysis from 2D-GIXD data of polycrystalline an oligothiophene thin film is reported.
