Radioactive fallout from the accident of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), which was caused by the Tohoku earthquake (March 11, 2011), contaminated large area around the nuclear facility. Just after the accident, many studies on the restoration of living environment contaminated by volatile radioactive nuclides such as 134Cs, 137Cs and 131I were started by many universities, national institutes, NGOs and commercial companies. In this report, the sequence of Fukushima Daiichi NPP accident and the spread of radioactive contamination in the living environment are presented firstly, and the decontamination techniques of polluted soil (the mechanical separation techniques such as classification, polishing and washing, and the chemical separation techniques such as sublimation, chemical washing and hydrothermal decomposition) and the water clean-up techniques such as coagulation settling and highly selective adsorption are introduced according to the evaluation results of the FY2011 Decontamination Demonstration Model Works by Ministry of the Environment.

We introduce scanning capacitance force microscopy (SCFM), a newly developed dopant profiling method, and a 3-dimensional wiring procedure enabling evaluation of dopant profile under metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect-transistor (MOSFET) operation. The principle of the SCFM is based on measurement of an electrostatic force (ESF) that is induced by bias voltage of angular frequency ω between a tip and a sample. The focused ion beam (FIB) technique was employed to evaluate dopant profile for the cross-section of MOSFET devices under the device operation. Local etching, deposition, and formation of small wiring for the specified MOSFET were successively carried out with the FIB, and the variation of dopant profiling was clearly shown with applying voltage to the MOSFET. These techniques are expected to be utilized for the failure analysis and the development of next-generation devices.

Perovskite-type La1−xBixMnO3 (LBMO), which are prepared by doping the Bismuth (Bi) ion in LaMnO3, were shown to exhibit the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effect. Samples were produced using a sintering process in an air atmosphere as a function of the Bi composition ratio x. X-ray diffraction measurements showed that the LBMO crystal structure varied among an orthorhombic (or rhombohedral) type with 0.0<x<0.3, to a cubic type with 0.3<x<0.5, and to a monoclinic type with for 0.5<x. The CMR effect of LBMO for x=0.2 was approximately 400% at 140 K. In addition, the magnetoresistance of the LBMO system was found to be proportional to the square of the magnetization. It was interpreted that, from XPS analysis, the valence states of manganese and bismuth atoms in LBMO contain [Mn3+,Mn4+] and [Bi3+, Bi2+ (or pseudo-divalent Bismuth)] ionic states.

The discovery process and the mechanism of p-type surface layer accumulation of hydrogen terminated diamond surfaces have been reviewed from the point of surface characterization and carrier formation near the subsurface. Since diamond is an insulating material, the surface density is as high as the order of 1013 cm−2 that is enough for high performance field effect transistors to be realized. The surface dipole formed by hydrogen-carbon bonds has a crucial role for the surface band structure of diamond. Also important is several types of negatively charged adsorbates necessary for charge neutrality condition and hole accumulation. New models for carrier emergence such as a transfer doping model have been discussed.

Highly concentrated pastes of Au and Ag nanoparticles were prepared by a novel method using a comb-shaped block copolymer and an amine as protective colloid and reducing agent, respectively. The nanoparticles were applied to paint colorants utilizing the surface plasmon light absorption. Au and Ag nanoparticles exhibited clear red and yellow colors, respectively. It was revealed that the nanoparticles possess aesthetic color properties such as transparency and color saturation as well as excellent weather durability. Further, a novel metal paint system was also developed from using the condensed Ag paste, which enables us to produce metal like coatings by a simple, dry and environmentally friendly process.

Specimen damage due to electron beam irradiation is a serious problem for EPMA/SEM observation, which is caused by heat produced in the process of inelastic scattering of incident electrons. The produced heat is in proportion to the specimen current and accelerating voltage and is in inverse proportion to the beam diameter. The thin film method using this substrates for the soft materials is effective to avoid the electron beam damage. Several effective methods to suppress the specimen damage are presented and discussed by using real examples.

Co-Mn Conposite oxide films were formed on stainless steel electrodes by polarizing them slightly cathodically in a dilute aqueous solution containing Co2÷ and MnO4- ions. The solutions were supersaturated with sparingly soluble compounds, Co2O3 and MnO2, which were produced as a result of the redox reaction between Co2+ and MnO4- ions. Supersaturation was kept during the film formation. The [Mn] / [Co] ratio of the films varied with the concentrations of Co2+ and MnO4- ions in the solution, the elapsed time from solution preparation, and the electrode potential of stainless steel. This method is applicable to the film formation of sparingly soluble compounds on conductive materials.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has become an essential tool for observing the biological materials, however, various complex procedures preclude observation of living organisms to date. Here we present a new method to observe living organisms by a SEM. We observed the active movements of animals in vacuo (10−5—10−7 Pa) by coating them with a thin polymer membrane, NanoSuit®, made by polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monolaurate and found that the surface fine structure of the living organism is very different from that of traditionally fixed samples. After observation of the larvae of mosquitos, despite the high vacuum, we could rear them in normal culture conditions. We also found that the NanoSuit® and self-standing biocompatible films were able to produce by plasma polymerization from various monomer solutions. Our method will be useful for numerous applications, particularly in the electron microscopic observation of life sciences.

Stable structures and electronic states of Si(100)/SiO2 interface are investigated using the first-principles molecular dynamics method. Quartz, tridymite, and pseudo beta-cristobalite are employed as the initial structures of the SiO2 at the interface to find the stable ones by the structural optimization. It is found that the optimized tridymite-type SiO2 structure on Si is the most stable for thin (about 7Å) SiO2 layer. For the thicker (about 15Å) layer, however, this structure becomes less stable and the optimized quartz-type SiO2 structure is the most stable. The band gap variation along the direction perpendicular to the interface is also investigated for the optimized structures. In the SiO2 region within 1Å from the structural interface, the band gap remains as narrow as that of silicon. The drastic change of the band gap takes place in the SiO2 region between 1 and 4Å.

南部鉄器の「南部」の名称は約四〇〇年前,南部信直公が盛岡に城を構え,藩主としてこの地を持っていたことにはじまる。南部藩主が京都から盛岡に釜師を招き茶の湯釜を作らせたといわれる。盛岡には古くから砂鉄,岩鉄などの良質な鉄資源や,川砂,粘土,漆,木炭などの原料がすべて地元で産出され,鋳物産業にはもってこいの立地条件にありそのころから鉄器が製造されてきた。守るべき伝統は守りつつ新しいことへも挑戦していく南部鉄器を紹介いたします。

X-ray reflectivity (XRR) is a powerful technique for evaluating nanometer scale film structures. In principle, it is rested on interference of X-rays reflected on surface and interface of the film stacks. If we have a proper structural model for film stacks, calculation of XRR pattern is a physically well-defined procedure based on the Fresnel formula that only needs well known physical constants, wavelength of X-ray and refractive indices of film materials for X-ray. Therefore, XRR is capable of providing standard nano-film thickness ensuring SI unit traceability. We discuss roots of errors for the evaluated film structures, for example, miss-alignment of sample positions andso on. We also present several trials to diminish uncertainties of measured film structures.

拡散ポンプ油などの液体を真空中で円滑に蒸発させることはそれほど簡単ではない。真空中で加熱された液体の表面には蒸発が盛んに起こるworkingareaと静かで蒸発があまり起こらないtorpid areaが共存していることが多く,torpid areaが優勢な場合にはしばしば爆発的な沸騰(突沸)を起こす。そこで,液体を過熱せずに(熱分解させずに)安定的に多量の蒸気を得るためには,加熱法に何らかの工夫が必要である。本稿では,25年ほど前に行われた研究に基づいて,まず,液体の蒸発面にみられるtorpid現象と突沸現象について概説し,つぎにこれらの特異な現象の防止に環状ヒーター採用のボイラーが有効であることを述べる。筆者らが考案したボイラーには,底部にヒーターがまったく存在せず,ボイラーの周囲の液面より少し高い位置に帯状のヒーターが取り付けられている。このような加熱方法を採用すると,液体の蒸発量が多くなるにつれて,ボイラー内の液体はぐるぐると円周方向に回転するようになり,ちょうど攪拌装置を用いたときのような状況を呈する。最後に,この研究にまつわる筆者の二,三の思い出についても紹介する。
