A new PWM method of the three-level inverter using a digital signal processor, which is useful for large capacity instantaneous current controlled GTO inverters is presented.<br>In case of the three-level inverter, short pulses are always necessary to output medium voltage vectors. The output waveform deteriorates from the ideal PWM waveform by the influence of the minimum pulse width limit of the GTO thyristors.<br>In this PWM method, firstly, the switching sequences of voltage vectors which enable the neutral voltage balance control are selected.<br>And then, from these sequences of voltage vectors, sequences which are not affected by the minimum pulse width limit of GTO are selected.<br>Using these switching sequences, the voltage vector mean value control PWM method based on the space-vector control is proposed.

In this paper, we present a design method for reducing local losses in a Gate Turn-Off Thyristor (GTO) at turn-on and protecting GTOs, particularly those of the flat-package type used in the high-frequency switching from overheating failure. This method utilizes the measurement of cathode-current spread obtained by infrared measurement. The performance of this was verified observing the gate-current at turn-on in a GTO used in the LC resonant commutation circuit for a power supply rated 10kHz, 1.0MW.

During the voltage saturation of a PWM inverter driving a motor, the torque control characteristics of the motor deteriorate because the controller can control only the phase of the output voltage. The cross-coupling current control scheme is a control scheme for motors, and it can be used to shift from the variable voltage mode to the voltage saturation mode seamlessly, and vice versa. This paper shows numerical simulation results and the torque response when the control scheme is used during voltage saturation.

It is well known that the direct drive systems not to use the reduction gears with the clearane and backlash are required for the highly precise position control, whose motor must have high torque at very low speed. The authors have developed a new motor for this purpose and named PM vernier motor.<br>In this paper, it is explained at first what is PM vernier motor, the construction and principle, and then the theory able to calculate the torque and how to control its speed are described. It is also shown that the calculated values of torque were agreed well with the experimental results.

Recently, QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) transmission is paid to attention in digital modulation method, and it has been used for wireless LAN and digital broadcasting. QAM is a modulation method that puts information on carrier amplitude and phase. So QAM can achieve high-capacity data transmission that the use efficiency of frequency band is good. But QAM has a bad characteristic that is weak to the noise and the interference because distance between each symbol is short. Then we propose the method that not transmission data but CDMA signal, obtained after transmission data is modulated by spread code and multiplexed, is given to each symbol of QAM. And we studied about railway signal system on track circuit as a sample to apply this method. As result of computer simulations, we verified to be able to achieve the improvement of signal to noise ratio by optimizing the constellation map of QAM. We report with the method of a synchronous acquisition.

This paper deals with the high-frequency leakage current caused by a voltage-source PWM inverter. A nonnegligible amount of leakage current would flow through stray capacitors between stator windings and a motor frame due to a, large step change of the common-mode voltage produced by the PWM inverter. An equivalent circuit for the leakage current is proposed, which is expressed by a series resonant circuit. The analysis applying the equivalent circuit gives us such a conclusion that the connection of a common-mode choke in series between the inverter and motor terminal is not effective to reduce the rms and average value of the leakage current, but effective to reduce the peak value. Furthermore, this paper shows that the modeling and analysis are valid in designing a previously proposed suppression method of the leakage current.

Recently, with the progress of robust control techniques, the resonance of mechanical systems becomes a more important problem. This paper presents a position control method to suppress the torsional vibration of a 2 mass resonant system. Here we propose a sensorless control of arm portion. In this case, it is necessary to estimate some states of the arm portion. When motor portion parameters are well known due to several identifications, the reaction torque caused by the shaft torsion can be estimated. This reaction torque feedback makes it possible to control the resonance frequency between the torque current and the motor position. Here, we introduce a new concept which is called "Resonance Ratio". The resonance ratio is determined arbitrarily by the feedback of the reaction torque. The proposed method is a reasonable concept from a mechanical point of view.<br>The proposed control system is based on both the conventional PD control and the resonance ratio control. Then any sensor information of the arm portion is not used, and the proposed controller is a very simple structure. This is one of the remarkable points of the proposed method. We discuss an idea of the determination method of controller gains. The validity of the proposed method is also proved by several experiments.

We have done some attempts to understand the mechanism of commutation spark generation in universal motor from the image aspect using a high-speed camera. We have also mentioned about the generation of single and plural number of sparks at one commutator segment and the voltage between brush and commutator segment. This time, we investigated spark generation distribution and their position of the brush, by photographing all the sparks generated during a single-rotation of the motor. As a result, it's become clear that there is increasing of spark generation in the position near the side where the armature coil of the brush is connected.

Small-sized, AC series commutator motors (universal motors) are used very much in small appliances such as vacuum cleaners and hand tools, because they offer advantages of high speed and low cost. In particular, motors for vacuum cleaners are being designed with smaller size, but higher speed and increased output power. Therefore, it is desirable to improve commutation performance, because it influences the brush lifetime.<br>In this paper, a method to improve commutation performance of the motors is described. It is an exceptional armature winding form in which the turn number of the backward coil is less than that of the forward coil in the same slots. The commutation sequence determines which is the backward coil and which is the forward one. The configuration and operation of the exceptional armature winding form for universal motors are detailed. A factor to relate the commutation performance using the magnetic field and the commutation analyses is also described. The design theory is built up with respect to the exceptional armature winding form and usefulness of the method is verified for predicting brush lifetime with actual motors. The effect of the armature winding to improvement the brush lifetime is confirmed experimentally.

The procedure for identifying linear time-varying systems with dead times using the wavelet analysis has already been proposed by the authors. This paper reports an application of the identification procedure to actual control systems of watertube drum-boiler in a thermal power plant. The control systems are required to supply steadily high-quality steam subject to disturbances due to unexpected changes in load. Therefore, it is necessary to make a precise model which takes the disturbances into consideration for control system design. The identification procedure is applied by the following steps: (1) extension of the method for single-input/output systems to that for two-input/output systems, (2) estimation of the time span where the system is considered to be in steady states, and (3) estimation of the process transfer functions in each time span. The identified model is evaluated in terms of mean square errors of the process outputs (steam-pressure and water-level) in comparison with an ARX model.

This paper presents a system based on the control of PTZ cameras for automated real-time tracking of individual figure skaters moving on an ice rink. In the video images of figure skating, irregular trajectories, various postures, rapid movements, and various costume colors are included. Therefore, it is difficult to determine some features useful for image tracking. On the other hand, an ice rink has a limited area and uniform high intensity, and skating is always performed on ice. In the proposed system, an ice rink region is first extracted from a video image by the region growing method, and then, a skater region is extracted using the rink shape information. In the camera control process, each camera is automatically panned and/or tilted so that the skater region is as close to the center of the image as possible; further, the camera is zoomed to maintain the skater image at an appropriate scale. The results of experiments performed for 10 training scenes show that the skater extraction rate is approximately 98%. Thus, it was concluded that tracking with camera control was successful for almost all the cases considered in the study.

The two axis theory and the vector control based on this theory are well known. On the other hand, Yamamura proposed the phase segregation method (spiral vector method) for the analysis of induction motor, and suggested the field acceleration method (FAM). In this paper, the comparison of these analytical and control methods is investigated.At first, the equations from which the phase segregation will be derived are interpreted. In these equations, the information from 3-phase stator and rotor equations is involved. Secondly, it is clarified that the vector control system for constant rotor flux is a goal of T-I type FAM which is derived from a zero transient term condition. By using the T-I type transient equivalent circuit, the vector control system is easily obtained, because the circuit is the same as steady-state one when the amplitude of rotor flux is constant. The analytical solution of transient response for the vector control system is obtained for arbitrary initial conditions. Furthermore, the stability of T-II type FAM especially for the effect of stator resistance change is discussed by computing the torque transfer function. When the stator resistance is correctly estimated, the pole-zero cancellation occurs on the imaginary axis.

This paper proposes a novel control method based on the virtual AC/DC/AC conversion for the matrix converter. The virtual AC/DC/AC conversion method is a very simple strategy to control the input current and the output voltage for the matrix converter. There are two new topics proposed in this paper. Firstly, this paper proposes the minimum switching loss modulation on the virtual rectifier. In case of the proposed modulation, only two arms switching in the virtual rectifier using dc link current control by the virtual inverter can obtain clean sinusoidal input current. Secondly, a novel lean controlled carrier modulation on the virtual inverter is proposed. The leans of the triangle carrier are controlled by the duty ratio of the rectifier side pulse. The lean controlled carrier reduces harmonic distortion of the input current by avoiding interference between the rectifier control and the inverter control. These new proposals are confirmed by simulation and experimental results.

The single-phase converter or rectifier always has a voltage ripple in the output DC voltage, because the instantaneous power of the single-phase AC line varies on the double frequency of the line. In order to obtain a smooth DC voltage, an energy storing element is necessary. The smoothing capacitor is used to reduce the ripple voltage in the DC output. Usually, it has much larger capacitance than that needed to absorb the ripple energy.<br>This paper discusses the required capacitance to absorb the ripple energy, and represents a ripple compensation circuit with a small auxiliary capacitor controlled by a 2-quadrant chopper connected in parallel to the smoothing capacitor. The appended capacitor works under large ripple voltage and efficiently absorbs the ripple energy. The ripple compensation curcuit works as an equivalent capacitor which has a large capacitance.

Power factor and torque of synchronous reluctance motors with a slit rotor are studied. In there stators, divided teeth made of powder magnetic core are adopted and windings are improved to get high space factor of stator windings and to shorten coil ends. In there rotors, stainless sheets are inserted among soft magnetic metal sheets with adhesive to strengthen the rotors and rotor structure is improved to enlarge the saliency ratio (<i>L<sub>d</sub></i>/<i>L<sub>q</sub></i>). As the result, the power factor 0.78 and 1.6 times torque at same motor size are attained.

This paper focuses on no-load iron losses of turbine generators. To calculate iron losses of turbine generators a program was developed. In the program, core loss curves of materials used for stator core were reproduced precisely by using tables of loss coefficients. Accuracy of calculation by this method was confirmed by comparing calculated values with measured in a model stator core. The iron loss of a turbine generator estimated with considering three-dimensional distribution of magnetic fluxes. And additional losses included in measured iron loss was evaluated with three-dimensional magnetic field analysis.

This paper describes an induction heating system of 1kW 450kHz which is developed for dental casting machines. This system consists of a single-phase diode rectifier, a voltage-source inverter using four power MOSFET's, and a series resonant circuit with a matching transformer of turn ratio 8:1. No capacitor is connected on the DC side of the rectifier except for a high frequency capacitor of 0.47 μ F. Thus, the DC voltage across the high frequency capacitor is fluctuating at 100Hz, that is, twice as high as the line frequency of 50Hz as if no capacitor were connected. Not only does the fluctuation have no effect on heating or melting but also the fluctuation plays an essential role in shaping the line current of the rectifier into sinusoid and unity power factor, because it is seen from the DC side of the rectifier that the inverter plus the resonant circuit acts as a pure resistance.The power control covering a wide range from 50W to 1kW is achieved by power factor control of the inverter which takes the place of DC voltage control of the rectifier.The system efficiency is estimated to be 76% by sophisticated measurement of the actual heating power, which is based on Lissajous's figures for voltage and charge.

This paper deals with the speed-up effect of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control for vehicle applications. A photovoltaic panel is set on a car running on a city road and its static characteristics are recorded by the proposed high-speed measurement system. The effectiveness of MPPT controllers with various sampling frequencies is evaluated with the recorded data by simulation. In the car application, a higher sampling frequency achieves higher MPPT efficiency.

This paper presents that, in hot strip finishing mills, AC motor drive systems improve the strip tension control performance which results in better strip thickness accuracy than DC motor drive systems.<br>Recently the AC motors are more widely used in many industrial fields including steel making process because of their higher response of speed control, higher reliability, and easier maintenance than DC motors. Here we consider the effect of using AC motors as rolling main motors from a point of view of strip thickness accuracy. We analyse the relation between speed control response of the strip tension control system and strip thickness accuracy with use of the Bode diagram and non-linear simulation. As a result we show that the higher response of AC motor speed control system can achieve the smaller strip tension deviation, furthermore makes it possible to get higher response of gage control system which turns more accurate strip thickness.
