This study aimed to clarify the relations between awareness of and attitude toward parental aging from late adolescence to early adulthood in Japan. An online survey was conducted with 800 participants aged 20-39 years, and the data were analyzed by exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Awareness of “decline in parents’ activity” and “parents’ psychological maturation” were extracted for awareness of parental aging. Four attitudes toward parental aging were extracted: “caring about aging parents,” “sadness about parental aging,” “anxiety over parents’ old age,” and “generativity evoked by parental aging.” Structural equation modeling revealed that awareness of decline in parents’ activity was positively associated with sadness about paternal aging as well as anxiety over parents’ old age. Awareness of parents’ psychological maturation was positively associated with generativity evoked by parental aging. Additionally, awareness of parents’ psychological maturation was positively associated with caring about aging parents, except for women in their 20s and 30s regarding their fathers and mothers, respectively. These associations differed according to the type of parent-child relationship and the child’s age group.

The present study examines the relationships among the degrees of internalization of media messages, self-consciousness, and dieting behaviors in females from childhood to young adulthood. A total of 422 elementary, junior and senior high school, and college students completed an anonymous questionnaire. The perceived media pressure to lose weight and information on thinness obtained from the media increased with school levels, especially from junior to senior high schools. Multiple regression analyses revealed that the perceived media pressure to lose weight predicted the level of dieting behaviors in the students across all school levels. For senior high school students, public self-consciousness also explained dieting behaviors, whereas private self-consciousness was related to dieting behaviors in the students in other school levels. The findings of the present study suggest that psychoeducational programs to prevent eating problems include elementary school girls as well as pay attention to heightened tendency to focus on how they look to others as one of the risk factors in high school girls.

This study aimed to clarify undergraduate students' styles of sharing with close friends at their university. Participants were 972 undergraduate students who responded to a 75-item questionnaire relating to styles of sharing, satisfaction, and depth of relationship with university friends (acquaintances, good friends, or best friends). The results were as follows. (1) Six styles of sharing with friends were identified: sharing relationships, places, feelings, intentions, items, and sensitivity. (2) Scores for all six styles of sharing were higher in the order of best friends, good friends, and acquaintances. (3) Irrespective of level of intimacy, sharing in relationships increased satisfaction and depth of relations. On the other hand, sharing worries or negative feelings decreased satisfaction with all three types of friends, but stimulated deeper relations with both good and best friends. In addition, sharing items decreased satisfaction with good friends and depth of relations with best friends. Results show that close friendships among undergraduate students involving sharing relationships, places, feelings, intentions, and sensitivity was based on psychological bonds, and such sharing might decrease satisfaction but deepen relations with close friends.

Contemporary Japanese adolescents tend to be Ijiri-Ijirare oriented, which is defined as playful communication using aggressive expressions that are not intended to hurt others. However, it is unclear why contemporary Japanese adolescents are Ijiri-Ijirare oriented. To clarify the reasons for the Ijiri-Ijirare orientation, we developed the Ijiri Oriented Scale. We examined its relationship with the porcupine dilemma, defined as conflicts concerning psychological distance with friends. College student participants (N=318) completed the Ijiri Oriented Scale. Confirmatory factor analysis of their responses indicated a three factors structure: “Ijiri-Ijirare orientation”, “Ijiri preference“, and “Ijirare preference.” The three-factor structure of the scale, each assessed by five items, had an acceptable fitness level. Then, we conducted multi-group structural equation modeling to test the links between Ijiri orientation and the porcupine dilemma. Results indicated that specific indicators of psychological distance impacted Ijiri orientation but not the porcupine dilemma. The Ijiri preference increased to avoid feeling hurt and decreased when adolescents tend to be prosocial. Moreover, Ijirare preference increased to avoid making others feel hurt or lonely.

The present study examined whether the captain's leadership affects the club members' interpersonal skills and their adjustments to club activities in junior high school extracurricular athletic clubs, and whether the characteristics of club activities (such as individual sports and team sports) also affects the adjustment. The interpersonal skills were constructed of non-inclusive attitudes toward members of other small groups, active self-assertion, and egoistic self-assertion. Participants, 495 seventh-grade students belonging to athletic clubs at 6 junior high schools, completed a questionnaire. The following significant result was obtained: When diligent captains in team sports clubs were authoritarian, the members who were non-inclusive toward members of other small groups were more satisfied with the atmosphere in their clubs than when the diligent captains were non-authoritarian. We conclude that the relationship among characteristics of athletic club activities, club members' interpersonal skills and their captains' leadership style had a great influence on members' satisfaction to club activities.

This study was conducted to show how 4 types of amae-engagers (Types A: Adaptive, B: Suppressed, C: Hesitant and D: Confused, as identified by Amae-Type Scale (ATS), Kobayashi & Kato (2015)) would differ, in the theoretically predicted ways, on the various aspects of amae processes (amae-related behaviors/cognitions, emotions, and attitudes) in the 3 (pre-, in-, and post-) phases of amae interactions; therefore, so as to demonstrate ATSʼs theoretical validity. 305 college students responded to a questionnaire to self-rate on the theoretically identified various aspects of experiencing processes in the amae interaction which they actually had engaged in. The findings demonstrated that the 4 types differentially had experienced their own amae interaction, as theoretically expected. Implications of the findings and potentials of ATS and its perspective for future amae research were discussed.

This study had four purposes: (1) to create two scales related to the time spent alone by undergraduate students; (2) to examine the relationship between how the students spent their time alone, and their thoughts and assessments about spending time alone; (3) to examine what types of groups with what characteristics were observable, specifically as to how the subjects spent time alone and what their thoughts and assessments were about spending time alone, and (4) to examine the relationship between ego identity and how the subjects spent their time alone and their thoughts and assessments about spending time alone.An investigation was carried out using a questionnaire given to 347 undergraduate students. The results revealed the following. (1) Their thoughts and assessments about spending time alone could be described, using four subscales: loneliness/anxiety, desire for independence, fulfillment/satisfaction, and desire for isolation. (2) How the subjects spent their time alone also comprised four subscales: self-introspection, self-liberation, immersion in personal activities, and release from stress. (3) A cluster analysis identified five different cluster groups: the Anxious-When-Alone Group, the High-Desire-for-Independence Group, the Moderate Group, the Feeling-One’s-Way Group, and the Desire-for-Isolation Group. (4) A path analysis found that the way in which students spent their time alone, and their thoughts and assessments about spending time alone, had an influence on ego identity.

We examined the relationship between a sense of alienation and the gap in psychological distance in friendship. Psychological distance was measured by an original projective test technique. The psychological distance of the real and the ideal were measured by placing a sticky dot on a 9.5-cm line printed on a piece of paper and then drawing a circle along the line. By this method, the respondent was asked to quantify their own psychological distance from a friend and the friend's psychological distance by guessing the friend's feelings. This technique is visual and easily understood. We considered that the act of physically placing a sticker gave further emphasis to the act of "placing" the person. Subjects in the group that did not have a gap in psychological distance felt less alienated than those with a gap. Lack of self-expression, lack of mutual understanding, and physical factors were considered to be the determinants of the presence of a gap in psychological distance. Moreover, some people felt the need to distance themselves so as not to interfere.

<p>Effects of internet use and athletic club activities on high school students' sleep behaviors were examined. High school students responded to a self-administered questionnaire. Moderating effects of self-esteem and relationships with friends and parents on time spent using the internet and participation in athletic club activities were examined by focusing on behaviors that adjust the circadian rhythms and promote sleep. The results indicated the moderating effects of satisfaction with relationships with friends on internet use and moderating effects of self-esteem on participation in athletic club activities in boys. Conversely, there were no moderating effects between any factors in girls. It is suggested that internet use and participation in athletic club activities and gender differences, self-esteem, and relationships with friends should be considered for improving sleep behaviors.</p>

The purpose of this study was to develop the Negative Urgency Scale for Japanese adolescents, and to examine the influence of negative urgency and sensation seeking on adolescent desires for self-destructive behaviors (self-injury and risk taking behavior). Participants included 304 undergraduate and graduate students. The reliability of the scale was verified based on its internal consistency, while its concurrent validity was tested based on its correlation with physical and verbal aggression. In males, a hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that both negative urgency and sensation seeking were positively correlated with the desire to engage in both self-destructive behaviors. Furthermore, the score on the desire for self-injury was higher when the scores on negative urgency and sensation seeking were higher. In females, negative urgency was positively correlated with desire for self-injury, and sensation seeking was positively correlated with desire for engaging in risk taking behavior. However, the interaction between negative urgency and sensation seeking was not evident in females.
