In general, it is difficult for others to understand the peculiar manifestations of Asperger's syndrome(AS) in social and school situations, so AS patients are often met with misunderstanding and negative assessments. As a result, AS patients face difficulties in developing a positively organized concept of self. In the present study, we recruited seven adolescent patients with AS and conducted a sentence completion test (SCT) in addition to a semi-structured interview focused on the following four problems: 1) Difficulty with personal relationships, 2) Differences between oneself and others, 3) Experiences of being bullied, 4) Current status of medical therapy or counseling. The results indicated that all of the patients had insufficient awareness that their "experiences of being bullied" and the "differences between oneself and others" were caused by their own disorder. They also did not understand that this insufficient awareness might contribute to their negative concept of self. However, some of them had developed a more positive concept of self and self-awareness, skillfully adapting to their social environment with professional psychosocial support and familial (especially maternal) support, and having participated in social activities such as school attendance and employment. This emphasizes the importance of promoting the formation of positive self concept and self-awareness for AS patients.

This study aimed to develop a scale measuring university studentsʼ views of Japanese society. In study 1, 111 students provided free descriptions of their evaluations of society. The descriptions were classified into 11 categories. In study 2, based on the results of study 1, the Oneʼs View of Society Scale was developed, and its validity was examined. The participants comprised 271 students. Factor analysis yielded three subscales: “negative evaluations of selfish and self-righteous people,” “positive evaluations of a peaceful and affluent life,” and “respect for efforts.” Correlation analyses between the subscales and previous scales revealed that the validity of the Oneʼs View of Society Scale was acceptable. The results revealed that university studentsʼ views of society had the following features: (a) the studentsʼ conceptualizations of their image of ʻsocietyʼ was varied; (b) they negatively evaluated society as a whole, as well as politics, media, and human relations; (c) they considered affluence, culture, and peace as positive attributes of society; and (d) most students evaluated society negatively but there were individual differences in degree of anxiety to live in society.

The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between the attitudes regarding money and work values in university students. University students responded to the Money Beliefs Scale, Work Values Scale, Affirmative Attitudes towards Freeter Scale, Sense of Urgency toward Job Hunting Items and Desire to Get a High Salary Items. The results of multiple regression analysis showed significant positive correlations between the following subscales: equivalent value of work and self-worth and social evaluation, importance and comfortable working environments, equivalent value of work and cordial human relations, equivalent value of work and independence from the organization. However, there were no significant correlations between Money Beliefs Scale score and Affirmative Attitudes toward Freeter Scale scores. Moreover, there were significant positive correlations between Sense of Urgency toward Job Hunting Scale score and equivalent value of work, difficulty of acquisition, as well as positive effects and importance. In addition, there were significant positive correlations between Importance and Desire to get High Salary Items. The significance of this study for research on attitudes about money is discussed.

Situations in which adolescents were anxious in initiating, maintaining, and terminating romantic relationships were termed "problematic situations in romantic relationships," and characteristics of such situations were identified in Japanese adolescents. Undergraduates (n=288) responded to a questionnaire on problematic situations in romantic relationships, hetero-social anxiety, competence in romantic love, and romantic experiences. The structure of problematic situations and gender differences in anxiety were investigated on the basis of the degree of anxiety experienced in such situations. Results indicated the following. (1) Many adolescents experienced anxieties about maintaining and terminating relationships. (2) Females and adolescents with no experience of romantic experiences were more anxious about maintaining romantic relationships. (3) In males, romantic experiences influenced most problematic situations through hetero-social anxiety. (4) Males with no romantic experiences were more anxious in situations that needed an active approach.

NISHIHIRA (1995) found factors accounting for powers of recovery in ego by analysing biographies. The factors are 1) basic trust (Erikson, 1959) and health throughout the infant period, 2) competency (Erikson, 1959) from childhood to adolescence, 3) first, second and third psychological weaning, 4) a sense of mission as an identity. The purpose of the present study was to examine why Beethoven didn't commit suicide by analysing his HEILIGENSTADTER testament and his life history. Conclusions are the following. 1) He had basic trust and health throughout his infant period thanks to his relationship with his mother. 2) He had musical competency from childhood to adolescence. 3) His father influenced his super-ego, and his grandfather influenced his ego-ideal. Finally, Beethoven identified with his great grand father. 4) He felt a sense of mission in his historical identity as an artist. Thus, we can conclude with certainty that Beethoven had the powers of recovery inherent in a young ego, and this is the reason why he didn't commit suicide.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the meaning of orientation toward ideal self, i.e., the orientation toward actualization of ideal self, from both positive and negative points. We examined positive meaning from the relationship between orientation toward ideal self and the degree of self-development and negative meaning from the relationship between self-evaluation and orientation toward ideal self. We requested 638 university students to answer the questionnaire. As a result, it was shown that orientation toward ideal self was significantly positively related with expectation of future self-development and evaluation of past self-development, and it insisted that orientation had positive meaning on this point. The negative meaning of orientation toward ideal self, however, couldn't be found clearly. With further investigation, which implied that orientation toward ideal self was also related with acquirement of steps and acts to actualize ideal self, these results would be caused not only because that orientation toward ideal self meant the strength of one's heart but also because that it was followed the steps or acts to actualize ideal self.

本研究は,共感性を多次元的なものと定義し,犯罪者と一般青年との比較を通して,犯罪者の共感性の特徴について明らかにしようとするものである。その結果,犯罪者は,他者の不運な感情体験や苦しみに対して同情的で,何らかの配慮をすることに方向づけられやすい一方で,他者の立場にたって物事をとらえる視点が十分に高くない「アンバランスな共感性」を持つことが示された。また,この状態では,他者の苦しみによって,自分の苦しみが増大することを抑制する自己防御システムが働きにくくなることが推測された。

This research examined aspects of deadlock that students experienced during studying. I illuminated the characteristics of the problems for each academic year based on the consultations for new clients conducted by a student counseling organization (511 cases). Then, using psychological interviews (eight cases) with clients, I examined the essences of their studying problems. As a result, the degrees of unfitness of the clients due to decreased study motivation and poor grades were significant. In the first-year, there was a group of students whose degree of unfitness was so high, that the problem of forming their own autonomy was closely connected to their studying habits. As for the second and third years, problems that had previously been shelved, such as restructuring of the object or subject being studied, etc., had become obvious. As for the fourth year, when they were deciding the shape of their preparations for graduate research and thesis, some students felt anxious about how to represent their studies. It was suggested that enduring these anxieties would have a significant effect, causing them to question their own identity again.

Feelings of young people about inferiority in their appearance were analyzed and developmental changes in adolescence were investigated. Participants were junior high school, senior high school, and university students (n=433) who responded to items about recognition of inferiority in their appearance and related feelings. The results indicated that these feelings could be classified into six types: dissatisfactory feelings, sad feelings, ego-shrinking feelings, hostile feelings, yearning feelings, and self-affirmative feelings. Moreover, the results of cluster analysis indicated that the feelings could be classified into five types; other-ignoring type, self-affirmative type, self-negative type, yearning type, and other-aggressive type. For male, junior high school students showed the other-aggressive type more than other age-groups, high school students showed the other-ignoring type more than other age-groups, and university students showed the self-affirmative type more than other age-groups. Conversely, for females, junior high school students showed yearning type more than other age-groups, high school students showed the self-negative type and yearning types more than other age-groups, and university students showed the self-affirmative type more than other age-groups. These findings suggest that developmental changes of these feelings in adolescence are in transition; for males, aggression and ignoring others were disappearing and inferiority in their appearance was being accepted, whereas for females, yearning for others was changing into self-negation and inferiority in their appearance was being accepted.

In our study, we focused on ordinary female adolescents to investigate how the acceptance of femininity affects the tendency toward eating disorder through the former's effect on self-esteem, degree of satisfaction with one's physique, and consciousness of the opposite sex, by hypothesizing of a causality model for each stage of development. Our subjects were 698 girls whose ages ranged from the upper grades of elementary school to college and university age, and who were surveyed via a questionnaire in regards to their acceptance of femininity, self-esteem, degree of satisfaction with one's physique, consciousness of the opposite sex, and tendency toward eating disorder. Our results indicated that (a) for girls of a junior high school age and older, being unable to have "active acceptance of femininity" increased the "tendency toward eating disorder" because of lowered "self esteem;" (b) with junior high school and high-school students, the path from "degree of satisfaction with one's physique" to "tendency toward eating disorder" disappeared, suggesting that early and middle adolescence was in a state of confusion in terms of physicality; (c) in all stages of development, the "acceptance of femininity" elevated the "tendency toward eating disorder" through former's effect on "consciousness of the opposite sex," sensitivity to the words and actions of the opposite sex acting as a trigger for the "tendency toward eating disorder;" (d) for college and university students, "reluctant acceptance of femininity" makes "self-esteem" lower and induces the "tendency toward eating disorder," suggesting that the adaptation to a traditional female roles induced the "tendency toward eating disorder" through lowered "self-esteem."
