A total of 42 specimens of aegathoid stage, immature of cymothoid isopod (Crustacea), were investigated on the basis of sample collected by a shore seine from the coast of Katase (Fujisawa, Kanagawa Pref.), inner part of Sagami Bay, Pacific coast of central Japan, on 24 October 2015. There were identified as Nerocila phaiopleura Bleeker, 1857. The morphological characters of them were similar to descriptions and illustrations of that of previous records. The relationship of body length and maximum body width of all specimens of aegathoid stage of N. phaiopleura collected through in our previous studies on Japanese cymothoid isopods including present study are regressed to linear equation with high correlation coefficient. These isopod specimens could be separated to three other groups by distribution frequency of their body lengths: 1st group, 8 specimens, 8.1–11.9 mm BL; 2nd group, 43 specimens, 13.5–18.0 mm BL; 3rd group, 1 specimen, 20.4 mm BL.

The three copepod species Clavella perfida (Lernaeopodidiae), Haemobaphes diceraus (Pennellidae), and Beringobdella rectangulata (Piscicolidae) parasitize the gills of the Alaska pollock, Gadus chalcogrammus (Gadidae). Parasite specimens were sampled from Alaska pollock collected from the Shiranuka and Shibetsu areas of Hokkaido, Japan and the eastern Bering Sea. We investigated whether each of the three parasitic copepod species are panmictic across sampling locations by comparing the nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial COI gene. The occurrence of B. rectangulata was rare in this study (n=1 from Shibetsu only) and therefore excluded from the analysis. Our analyses revealed no genetic differences among the three sampled populations of C. perfida and H. diceraus. We conclude that these latter two parasitic copepods are widely distributed in the North Pacific and represent panmictic populations.

The kelp crab Pugettia quadridens was recorded from Hakodate Bay, Hokkaido, Japan, representing the first record of Hokkaido and the northern extension of its range after the redescription of P. quadridens by Ohtsuchi & Kawamura (2019). Considering the collected specimen was a mature male and P. ferox, a closely related species to P. quadridens, is the common species in the sampling site, occurrence of reproductive behavior between the two species was examined by observing the mating behavior in an aquarium. The male of P. quadridens did not attempt to mate with either of three females of P. ferox, implying a behavioral reproductive isolation between the two species.

We conducted laboratory experiments to examine the predation effects on larvae of two Japanese native dragonfly species by the North American invasive crayfish Procambarus clarkii. We put a larval individual of either Trigomphus interruptus or Coenagrionidae spp. in experimental aquaria, and after 24 hours we added an individual of P. clarkii of two different body size groups; small size group: total length (TL)<50 mm and large size group: TL>60 mm. After seven days, we observed whether the larval individuals of the dragonflies survived or not. We confirmed the severe predation on both of the two taxa of dragonfly larvae by P. clarkii. In T. interruptus, the survival rate was significantly lower compared to the control group (i.e., no crayfish) both in the small and large size groups. In Coenagrionidae spp., the survival rate of larvae in the small size group was significantly lower than the control group. In the large size group of P. clarkii, predation on the dragonfly larvae was also observed, but there was no significant difference compared to the control group. These results indicate that P. clarkii especially in small size can have a marked negative effect on dragonfly larvae through severe predation, if P. clarkii invades the habitats of dragonfly larvae.

The distribution of the ghost crabs (genus Ocypode) was investigated in 9 regions (the Boso Peninsula, the Izu Peninsula, south Shikoku, Amakusa, Kagoshima mainland, Tanegashima Island, Amami-Oshima Island, Okinawajima Island and Iriomotejima Island) along the Pacific coast of Japan. The temperate species of Ocypode stimpsoni was rec­orded from Izu, south Shikoku, Amakusa, Kagoshima mainland and Tanegashima, with their abundance being lower than the tropical/subtropical species of Ocypode ceratophthalma and Ocypode sinensis in all the regions. Juvenile O. stimpsoni, which occurred in Amakusa, Kagoshima mainland and Tanegashima, was not collected in Izu or south Shikoku. Ocypode ceratophthalma and O. sinensis occurred in all regions. Another tropical/subtropical species of Ocypode cordimanus was rec­orded by a few specimens from south Shikoku, Amami-Oshima Island and Okinawajima Island. In all the three tropical/subtropical species, the body size of the collected specimens was smaller in the mainland of Japan than in the Nanseishoto Islands. From the body sizes of the largest specimens collected in each region, the maturation was estimated to occur in regions southern from south Shikoku in O. ceratophthalma and in regions southern from Izu in O. sinensis.
