Short-pause is one of the important elements of presentation. In this study, we have investigated differences of taking short-pauses between winners and losers of book review presentation game, Bibliobattle. In order to find short-pauses, non-utterance sections in presentations are detected by converting time discrete audio signal to energy. Length, times and appearance position of short-pauses of winners and losers were compared. As a result, the following things were revealed. The first is that the average times of winners' brief (less than 0.4 sec) short-pauses is significantly smaller than losers' one. The second is that the losers' average times of short-pauses which appeared in unnatural position (between noun and postpositional particle or suffix) is significantly larger than winners' one.

Onomatopoeia refers to words that represent the sound, appearance, or voice of things, which makes it possible to create expressions that bring a scene to life in a subtle fashion. In this paper, we propose an onomatopoeia thesaurus map to enable the construction of a map that visually confirms “similarity relationships between a number of onomatopoetic words” and “similarity relationships between unknown onomatopoetic words and existing onomatopoetic words,” which are difficult to grasp from a conventional thesaurus. It is also possible to label objects with onomatopoetic words and visualize the similarity relationships between the objects on a map. In this paper, we introduce an example of labeling onomatopoetic words relating to the textures of sweets (desserts).

The main purpose of this paper is to develop an easy-to-use smartphone case with “fall prevention function”. It shows as a remarkable point that our developed technique of determining the grip form reflecting the traditional craftsmanship verifies for the made-to-order wooden products. It also provides the experimental result of wooden smartphone case using electromyography (EMG). The experiment consists of two cases, with using a smart phone case and not it. Then, it compared with these two cases, the result of measuring the amplitude of gripping forces. The experiment suggests that using the smartphone case relatively clearly that applies significantly less gripping force, so that prevents dropping a smartphone. The experiment suggests that using the smartphone case it applies significantly less gripping force. It will provide a new guideline of the universal design as a case study of Kansei/affective engineering regarding human grip.

Humans are aware of their world due to sensory input and a variety of information from all five senses is integrated into the brain. Research on the mechanisms underlying sensory integration has been extensive; however, few studies have investigated information arising from three or more sensory inputs. The purpose of the present research is to clarify the importance of sensory integration of information arising from the visual, auditory, and tactile senses. Three experiments were conducted to determine the integration of visual images, sounds, and vibrations from a haptic mouse, to investigate the matching of a combination of multi-sensory information represented by digital information. A greater impact was seen for visual information than for auditory or tactile information when the three types of information were presented simultaneously. A difference was also noted for presentation time for visual, auditory, and tactile information.

The purpose of this research is to clarify the relationship between the female body type and posture and the aesthetic impression it creates. We divided the BMI into 5 levels, body types into 3 levels, and posture into 6 types, making 40 types of sample images created using a 3D body scanner. Questionnaires were conducted with 157 adult women using the SD method. As a result of the principal component analysis, the first principal component axis shows “beauty” and the second shows “plumpness”. From the scatter plot, regarding posture, the weak upright type had the lowest score for beauty. The balanced upright type was considered to be beautiful. The stage of BMI shows plumpness, and when the level of sharpness is low, the level of beauty also tends to be low. The impression of the form of women showed that the elements of posture are strongly related to beauty.

<p>In order to increase the number of videos playback, we researched on the thumbnail images and the titles which were selected by the viewers. We built the samples and conducted the questionnaires in order to reveal the factors that make a great influence on the evaluation and be clear about the positive levels. We revealed the viewers decide the videos under the influence of the images rather than sentences and words. Also, Images factors are particularly effective for males. On the other hand, females are more affected by sentences and words than males. This research revealed the guidelines that YouTuber creates thumbnail images and titles and the elements to incorporate according to the target the males or the females. As a starting point of this research, we will be able to conduct more detailed research on thumbnail images and titles. </p>

Considering the great popularity of amusement machines and contact lens that magnify the iris, it is clear that eyes play a significant role in facial attractiveness. However, there have been few studies that investigated attractiveness using average faces while manipulating the size of the iris and the shape of eyelid. In this study, we generated average female faces with either flat or double eyelids, we also generated four patterns of the size of the iris, and asked participants to rate their attractiveness and how natural or otherwise the faces appeared. The research found a face with flat eyelids and an iris at 125% of normal size was judged more attractive and more natural than faces with double eyelids. These results suggest that females with flat eyelids can readily enhance their facial attractiveness utilizing commodities such as contact lens that magnify the iris.

Extracting keywords from a target text data is essential for an analysis to describe substance characteristics of message content. We picked a use of a stopword filter from among alternatives because the method has the advantage that it is simple yet effective way. The filter we present was made up of non-content words and low-content words. Non-content-bearing words consisted mainly of function words and were gotten rid of by using part-of-speech (POS) tag information. High occurrence rate words in remaining had prospects of being keywords, however usually there were some low-content words like delexical verbs and so on. This article presents a stopword list obtained to come up with low-content words by sensuous manual procedures carried out using 40 text files from the CASTEL/J database and establishes it in the view of general versatility.

This paper proposes an automatic robot manzai (comic dialogue) generation system. In the proposed system, input sentences such as a tale, story, etc. are converted into a manzai script composed of boke (stupid joke) and tsukkomi (comeback). Then, two humanoid robots play the manzai taking roles of a funny man and a straight man, respectively. Their motions are determined from the motion database based on a verb in the utterance. The contributions of the paper are the following three points; a proposal of the novel system for an automatic robot manzai generation which can accept a normal story, convert it to the manzai script and play the manzai: verification of the usefulness of motions in the manzai to make it funnier by experiments: indication of the effectiveness of the proposed system by experiments.

This paper describes linguistic features of generally unreadable person names, which are defined as "<I>KIRAKIRA</I> names," and proposes a method to detect <I>KIRAKIRA</I> names based on the features. Through the discussions, the following eight features are founded as the linguistic features of <I>KIRAKIRA</I> names: 1) Too many Kanji characters, 2) Too many syllables, 3) Multiple usage of a common Kanji character, 4) Kanji variants are used, 5) The pronunciation of Kanji is generally unknown, 6) Too many stroke count for Kanji, 7) Mismatching of gender between a person and the name, and 8) The pronunciation of name equals an imported word. Based on the features, <I>KIRAKIRA</I> names are automatically detected by using Support Vector Machine. The experiments to detect <I>KIRAKIRA</I> names were conducted for 10,000 names. The results of the experiments showed 81.79% accuracy, 76.89% precision, and 91.84% recall.

This paper discusses the changes of magazines which women read according to the age using figures of the network, which we got from the answers to questionnaire of women's junior college students. The link of the network expresses frequent combinations of magazines read in the same period or frequent changes of magazines which women read. This paper covers fashion magazines, comic magazines and animation magazines. At first, it is found that the combination of magazines with a similar property are read in the same period. Next, changes of magazines which women read is clarified. 51.22%, 28.66%, and 19.51% of the college students read “Chao,” “Ribon,” and “Nakayoshi” in their childhood, respectively. Readers of “Chao” and those of “Ribbon” come to read fashion magazines or boys' comics for teenagers, and then street fashion or girly fashion magazines. “Nakayoshi” readers, however, tend to continue reading comic magazines sequentially.

This is a preparatory report of the study on the cognitive characteristics of color names in the congenitally blind. We conducted following two surveys on fifteen congenital blind persons to measure resemblance among color terms in the congenitally blind: (1) Ten participants were asked to recall color names similar to displayed color names which was also(originally)recalled by the participants. (2) Participants judged the similarities of all pairs of color names corresponding to 16 color names; siro, kuro, aka, ki, midori, ao, tya, murasaki, orange, pink, hai, kon, hada, mizu, sora, kimidori. For each of these names selected from recalled color vocabulary survey. The results show that the characteristics of congenital blind persons' color representations were absence of hue ordering seen in sighted people. Instead of hue ordering, multiple hue groups containing perceptually close color terms were identified; dark, light, warm, cool. This grouping could be explained through categorization process in Kay & McDaniel's modified basic term theory.

Mindfulness-based meditation is one of the most widely used techniques among many different meditation techniques. In this study, we examined the effect of mindfulness meditation on the performance of a task that requires control of timing. The participants performed a timing task after exercises of mindfulness meditation or silent reading. We analyzed accuracy (degree of closeness of measurements to the true value) and precision (standard deviation of measurements). The results showed that mindfulness meditation exercises increased timing precision of the performance, but did not influence accuracy of it. These findings suggest that mindfulness meditation stabilize the timing of human behavioral rhythms.

In this paper, first, analyses of many maxims are carried out to obtain knowledge for heart-touching phrases. Next, a creation system for heart-touching encouraging sentences is proposed using these findings. As for analyses, we collected 1,830 maxims because heart-touching phrases have a large effect on healing and encouragement. As a result, some interesting findings could be obtained such that positive and sentimental words are often used in heart-touching sentences. Contrast and emphatic sentences also tend to contribute to impressive expressions. The proposed system utilizes these findings to create heart-touching encouraging sentences. We performed evaluation experiments. We compared the sentences created by the proposed system with sentences created by humans. Many output sentences received evaluation values close to those created by humans.

This paper aims to consider the Kansei of the fourth graders of the elementary school to the public space through the analysis of the environmental estimation and the proposal by means of the use of Five Senses' icons and Thanks icons. The method can be categorized into three stages, the first being the conduction of the fieldwork and workshop about security in their school route and around school. In the workshop, students make suggestions about the security of a well-known city. The second being the collection of the result data discriminated in quantitative terms in order to understand their tendency and the third stage being the qualitative consideration of the proposed typical.According to the analysis during the estimation phase by the fourth graders of the elementary school, it is revealed that Thanks icons bring about the positiveness of the children.

When solving a mathematical problem, in spite of mastering knowledge and formula necessary for the solution, we sometimes encounter a situation where we cannot reach the correct answer. The reason can be contributed to the lack in metacognitive abilities. Metacognitive abilities consist of comparing the difficulty of problem with own ability, proper plan of solution process, and conscious monitoring and control of solution process. The role and importance of metacognitive ability in mathematical problem solving of permutations and combinations was explored. Participants were required to solve five problems related to permutations and combinations. For each problem, the solution process was divided into (1) recognition of mathematical problem, (2) plan of solution, and (3) execution of solution. Participants were required to rate the anticipation whether they can solve it or not, and to rate the confidence of their own answer. According to the total score of five problems, the participants were categorized into the group of the higher test score and the group of the lower test score. As a result, at the plan and the execution processes, statistically significant differences were detected between the high and low score groups. As for the rating on the anticipation of result and the confidence of own answer, no significant differences were found between both group. Moreover, the relationship between the score of plan process and the score of execution process was statistically correlated. In other words, the more proper the plan process was conducted, the more proper solution the participants reached. In such a way, the importance of metacognitive ability in the solving process, especially the plan ability was suggested.

The theory of “cognitive dissonance” is one of the many topics related to customer satisfaction research. Some research used “free-choice paradigm” which is known to present threats to people in post-decision. However, most of the experiments focus only on theoretical frameworks, leaving aside consumer decision making. Therefore, this paper aimed to clarify the effect of online reviews on post-decision cognitive dissonance. In the experiment, participants were asked to choose the best item from nine earphones, each one of them had online reviews which were manipulated by an experimenter. When some participants saw some reviews which supported their decision, they justified their choices. In contrast, when some participants saw some reviews which unsupported their decision, they didn't only justify but also showed some unpleasant feelings towards the reviews. To conclude, some consumers were strongly influenced by online reviews after purchase.

<I>Oshibori</I> is a small wet towel to wipe hands before meal in Japan. Most of researches on <I>oshibori</I> have investigated the towels from the perspective of cleaning and sanitation. Few studies have assessed the qualitative and sensory characteristics associated with <I>oshibori</I>. In this paper, subjective evaluation experiments were carried out using cotton <I>oshibori</I> of different temperatures such as 5, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 &deg;C in the laboratory temperature at 20, 25 and 30 &deg;C over four seasons. 29 males and 33 females evaluated <I>oshibori</I> on following properties such as &ldquo;favorite,&rdquo; &ldquo;rare,&rdquo; &ldquo;hot,&rdquo; &ldquo;feel-smooth,&rdquo; &ldquo;high-grade,&rdquo; &ldquo;comfortable,&rdquo; &ldquo;soft,&rdquo; and &ldquo;moist,&rdquo; according to five point grading. As results, the <I>oshibori</I> at the temperature of 5, 15, 45 and 60 &deg;C were evaluated to be comfortable. Contrary, those of 30 and 75 &deg;C were evaluated uncomfortable. Moreover, sexual specificity of the evaluation was observed.
