This study examined the trends in clothing that female university students followed and the kind of impression they intended to give their interviewers on being asked to take an interview dressed in attire that reflected their virtues. The following three hypotheses were examined: First, there is significant difference between student's impression management in everyday life and the impression that they wish to leave interviewers with. The students' impression management centered around their desire to prove their competence for the job. Second, the attire selected by students for job interviews differs from what they usually wear. They tend to choose a more elaborate dressing style for a job interview. Finally, students manage their impression by carefully selecting their attire for a job interview. The results showed that all the three hypotheses were valid. Further, the results revealed that students associated the clothes they chose for job interviews with a certain impression that they wished to make and that they managed their impression by independently choosing their outfits for job interviews.

Roboticists believe that highly, but not perfectly, realistic human-looking robots elicit negative feelings in humans. This is the so-called ‘uncanny valley’ response. Most research on the uncanny valley has used the morphing technique and the morphing rates as the objective scale. However, those findings might come from unnatural and/or unexistable appearance of morphed faces. The present study investigated the uncanny valley by measuring participants' impressions of some existing robots whose degree of human likeness was evaluated by Scheffé's paired comparison method, a kansei-engineering approach. The survey demonstrated the uncanny valley like Mori's (1970) hypothetical graph. Furthermore, as the X-axis, ‘experience’, one of the two independent dimensions in mind perception (Gray, Gray, & Wegner, 2007), showed the pattern of the uncanny valley, but ‘agency’ did not. These results suggest that robots become unnerving when people ascribe to them experience, rather than agency.

The purpose of this research is to examine the sound symbolism of Japanese morae. Japanese sense the Japanese morae integrating their visual and sound image, and foreigners cannot fully integrate those. Therefore, two surveys were carried out. On the first survey about the image of 46 Japanese morae (conducted on Japanese) three principle sound symbolism characteristics were extracted - “inorganic - organic”, “comfortable - uncomfortable” and “tranquillo - rough”. On the other hand, the second survey for foreign students indicated clear difference between visual and sound image. I report some interesting findings on Japanese sound symbolism characteristics, such as the high correlation with visual and sound image on “inorganic - organic”.

The main purpose of this paper is a proposal for restoration support system of historical buildings using virtual environments. Trend has developed to restore historical Japanese buildings such as theaters as symbols of town renovation. However, the restoration of such buildings commonly encounters many difficulties such as a lack of documents, and different construction materials and structures between the old era and the present. Virtual images of a restored building should be a great help in evaluating and discussing various restoration plans. We have constructed a restoration support system for historical buildings, using virtual environments to help the design plan for indoor restoration. CAD data based on actual measurements of an old theater, Tsurukawaza in Kawagoe, were employed to construct the 3D model for the system, which ensures reproduction of the interior details of the theater. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the support system.

Choreography is one of the important parameters in dance performance. To make dance cool, it is necessary to design the cool choreography. However, beginners can hardly design choreography because they do not know how to judge the choreography good or bad. In this paper, we propose a system which automatically estimates the coolness of choreography for Lock dance and supports for the beginners to design choreography more sophisticated. To realize the proposed system, we focus on the suitability between the dynamics of dance move and music as a parameter of the coolness. We propose the estimation formula of the coolness based on the suitability, and evaluate it experimentally. As the result, it is revealed that the higher the suitability becomes, the higher the coolness becomes especially for the experienced participants feel on the experimented environment. Consequently, it is expected that the proposed system enables beginners to design cool choreography.

This paper aims at the scene frame generation based on the summarization of a narrative text, and studies effect of text summarization on generation of scene frame for manga drawing. Scene frames are generated from a summary using four kinds of importance degrees, the importance degree of an entire narrative text, the importance degree of a story and the importance degree of the first appearance of a character in a story, the importance degree of the sentence location. Subjects experiments are performed in order to verify the effectiveness of the present approach of scene frames generation, and study effect of text summarization. Experimental results show the present system can generate understandable scene frames of Manga from the narrative text with the summarization rate level smaller than 0.4.

Rapid urbanization and information technology has reduced human connection and a sense of regional community among local populations around the world. This may have led to a decrease in people's sense of belonging and feelings of fellowship toward their neighbors and towns. We hypothesized that one's sense of belonging and feelings of fellowship toward their town will increase after hearing the sounds of bells. Participants were asked to observe virtual scenes in which they heard the bell signaling every hour. We assessed how listening to the bell influenced participants' feelings of community membership and whether viewing particular scenes and the sound increased these feelings and participants' sense of belonging. Results showed that for scenes involving an overhead view of the bell, e.g., scenes that included facilities such as temples or churches, participants reported an increased immersive experience. as a result of the shared sense of time with their neighbors.

Along with recent developments of industrial finishing of plastics, simulating surfaces is much desired in industries. This research attempts to build a virtual prototyping system for surface finishing. Simulating surfaces will accelerate to Kansei-oriented product development without large cost of making real prototypes. Since the developed system renders bumpy and glossy surfaces in real-time, evaluator can accurately examine surfaces. As an application of the system, leather grain patterns of car dashboard were simulated. At first, surface details of car dashboards were measured with a laser 3D range finder device. Then, Kansei evaluation was done with 30 virtual prototypes those have variations on cars, intensity of roughness and with or without gloss. The evaluation result was analyzed with PCA and 3-factor ANOVA. Expression capacity of the system was validated with ANOVA results, those show significant effects of virtual prototype parameters on Kansei evaluation.

Although human beings are capable of discerning a variety of textures through the sense of touch, there is as yet no consensus as to how best to classify those textures. To resolve this problem, we proposed a novel method of categorizing tactile textures using onomatopoeic words in Japanese. Based on the impressions they evoke, onomatopoeic words pertaining to tactile sensations are distributed on a two-dimensional space, making it possible to visualize how different tactile sensations are related to one another. Combining the results obtained with the subjects' evaluations of the materials touched in terms of how pleasant or unpleasant they find those materials, this paper attempts to visualize on a two-dimensional space the relationship between the pleasantness/unpleasantness associated with the materials and the tactile sensations that they evoke.

To create innovative ideas, it is important for designers to monitor thought patterns by reflecting upon their thought structure and then control thought. In this study, we visualized the inference process, which includes deduction, induction, and abduction, as well as the associative process. Subsequently, by connecting them radially along the flow of thought, we employed a method of visualizing the inference process of designers on a two-dimensional plane. We conducted an experiment to visualize a part of the thought of designer using the “inference mapping method.” Consequently, we found out that different cognitive biases occurred in designers' deductive, inductive, abductive, and associative thinking processes. From the technical viewpoint of cognitive science, we studied the phenomena and clarified the structure of bias in each thought process. Finally, we proposed a way to visualize cognitive biases and to consciously eliminate them when designers engage in the creative process.

This study examined how viewers' video watching was affected by the impact the display of video content on an L-shaped news ticker that shows textual information in the margin of a TV screen. By establishing video replay conditions using the L-shaped ticker and the normal screen, we analyzed the viewer's gaze fixation, and their sense of comprehension and degree of recall of the video contents. Differences in the distribution of fixation durations between the two conditions were confirmed; indicating that viewing video on the L-shaped ticker rather than on the normal screen decreased the frequency of longer fixation durations and shortened the total fixation durations when viewing video. No difference was observed in the sense of comprehension and degree of the video contents between the two conditions. Based on these findings, we discussed the possible effects of L-shaped news tickers on viewers' video recognition and the application of the results.

Miyashita, Kimura, & Oka (2017) demonstrated that openness in the big-five personality traits did not relate to aesthetic evaluations of paintings while the aesthetic dimension of value did. Conversely, previous studies showed that openness affects preferences for specific artistic paintings after predicting general preferences as a latent variable. Thus, the present study explored whether openness would affect aesthetic evaluation of paintings via mediating variable (i.e., aesthetic dimension of value). In our survey, 323 undergraduates were asked to evaluate 24 paintings using 4 scales of aesthetic evaluation. They were also asked to complete a questionnaire assessing their degrees of openness and the aesthetic dimension of value. Results demonstrated that openness did not directly relate to aesthetic evaluations of paintings but that it indirectly related to those via the aesthetic dimension of value. These results suggest that the aesthetic dimension of value relates to openness as a mediator of aesthetic evaluations.

International tourists in Japan are increasing year by year, and the Japanese government keeps promoting the tourism industry. In order to make Japan more attractive for tourists, the analysis of tourists' impressions is very important. One of the conventional approaches is to provide tourists with a questionnaire about sightseeing spots. However, the questionnaire has a problem, the memory of the interviewees fades and fine information cannot be obtained. In this paper, we describe a novel approach to detect the impression using information from electroencephalogram (EEG). Since the developed system makes use of a portable EEG device, it enables impression detection even if the subject is walking. In order to confirm the validity of the proposed system, we carried out both video-based and real-world experience of the typical sightseeing spots.

In this paper, we propose a dialogue system with emotion estimation and knowledge acquisition functions. In the emotion estimation part, 9-emotions are treated in the proposed bimodal approach using voice and natural language processing. In the voice processing part, 396-dimensional features are extracted from the voice data, and they are used in learning of Stacked Denoising AutoEncoder. In the natural language processing part, two methods are proposed. The first one is to consider the implications of the relationship between emotional expression dictionary and input sentence's words. The second one is to consider the co-occurrence frequency of the emotion words in emotion dictionary. In the knowledge acquisition part, the relationship patterns from the input sentences are extracted. In the evaluation experiments, we can confirm that the proposed dialogue system obtains higher score than the existing system in term of the adequacy of the feeling estimation and the variety of response sentences.

We investigated the RGB and XYZ components of the natural colors (two cherry blossoms, i.e., Someiyoshino and Youkou, and the emission of Heike-firefly), and the physiological effects on Japanese and foreign people were compared. The natural colors were digitally measured as RGB colors, and then they were used as color stimuli. The psychological effects were investigated by administering a questionnaire, which was based on the Semantic differential (SD) method. From the results of the questionnaire, the degrees of expression for the natural colors were quite different between Japanese and foreigners. The kansei on the natural colors between Japanese and foreigners were also different in terms of psychophysical quantity and physical cognition. The results of factor analysis showed that the color of Youkou gave pleasantness to Japanese people, whereas the colors of Someiyoshino and firefly gave pleasantness to foreign people.

Possibilities of “the affective curve drawing method” for assessing changes of affect in response to atmosphere over time, which is needed for developing effective designs of circumstances, was investigated. This evaluation method expresses continuously changing affective levels with curves. Differences in patterns of time-series affective evaluation between drawing timings, i.e. just after, and one hour after a stimulus being presented, were examined, and their correlations were indicated. This tendency was observed in both participants with high and low sensitivity to an atmosphere. There were no major differences in the evaluation patterns within an hour after the stimulus being presented. Furthermore, effects of participants' moods on evaluation of an atmosphere were examined by POMS and it was confirmed that an atmosphere was highly evaluated when participants had positive moods. From these results, possibilities of this method for time-series affective evaluation were confirmed.

From the previous paper, many problems about a fashion image term were shown. In this paper, I investigated the difference in evaluation of the fashion image term by nationality. I compared with the thing the image term in which the fashion photograph of 40 in the image term of 11 was chosen by 98 young South Korean women by the young 109 Japanese woman. As a result, while over 60% of Japanese subjects chose the same image terms for eight photographs, South Korean subjects selected for only three photographs. It was found that there was variation in the selected image terms on images of fashion style among the South Korean subjects. It analyzed using Hayashi's quantification methods class III. Although both were classified into four principal components, they differed from those of Japanese subjects regarding the styles belonging to each principal component and interpretation.

We propose a new communication system by which niche people can obtain cross-cutting information and communicate with other people based on each personality. The system graphically displays the degree and direction of other people's hobbies who are interested in the keyword niche people input, and relation between the knowledge e.g. movies, music, animation, history, geography using nodes. So, we can search friends who have similar interest and direction in hobbies. From the demonstration experiments, we obtained good results that the system could help niche people to gain and exchange useful information.

In this thesis, the relationship between sound and colour has been analysed with two different methods. First, colours are applied to sounds using the psychological technique that is based on a study on synaesthesia. In the second approach, the ideal tones are linked to hues that are referring to adjectives. However, both methods have their disadvantages. This study investigates the relationship between timbres and colours with quantitative data from tonal structures.<BR>In the first step, the relationship between timbres and colours is aggregated by conducting an experiment with subjects. The results are compared with the quantitative structure of the tone colours. From the result, four basic laws that define the causal relationship between timbre and cool or warm colours have been defined: overtone, fundamental frequency, length of sound and decay of sound.
