The Makabe higher elementary school building was completed in 1900 in Ibaraki prefecture. The building’s form has been unknown, however, this paper will introduce the building’s form, cost and construction period by means of the specification in 2014 obtained by research. The building was U-shaped and flat. The corridor was a balcony type arranged in a north and west configuration. There were eight classrooms and one music room of 6.3m×8.1m size, one sewing room of 8.1m square size for total floor area of approximately 1010 m2. The construction cost was approximately ¥5445, construction period was 14 months. The author drew the reconstruction of section by plan and material lists. As a result, the building is well-ventilated with a seismic design.

This paper describes the development of cast-in-place concrete piles at the dawn of Japanese foundation technology. The first cast-in-place concrete pile was compressole pile imported from France in 1907. The compressole pile was formed by dropping a hammer on the casted concrete in an excavated hole. Those piles installed at those days still exist in a number of historical buildings during more than 100 years. Following the compressole pile, abbot pile was introduced from the United States in 1910. The abbot pile is same manner to compressole pile, but using a casing tube to make a drilled hole.

In order to investigate the seismic performance of the existing RC buildings more accurately, it is necessary to clarify the mechanical properties of concrete. In this paper, the mechanical properties of concrete from six existing buildings constructed in 1953-1974 before the execution of demolition are discussed. The compressive tests and the splitting tensile tests were performed with the obtained concrete cylinders. Modulus of elasticity, strain at the maximum strength, stress-strain curves and tensile strength are discussed in comparison with the estimated values.

The concept of the universal design is necessary in the design of pedestrian space. The pedestrian space is repaired in structural design, but the resting place of a side walk is not fully ensured. The aim of this paper is to discuss how to improve resting place from the results of investigation. As the contents of investigation, the benches of the sidewalk on the outskirts of a station are investigated and the investigated benches were divided into 5 groups. As the results, it is cleared that the plan of establishment of bench by the citizens should be reconsider.

We describe the history and the present state of the Official Residence for the Commander of Karafuto-Guards, which was completed in 1908. We also deal with its suspected designer, Army Architect Yasushi Tamura (1878-1942), who is known as the designer of the Divisional Headquarters Office of the Imperial Guards. The official residence has high value in the modern architectural history not only because it is one of the oldest buildings of the Japanese colonial period in Sakhalin, but also because it was a dwelling house built for the people of highest class in Sakhalin.

Historical damages due to intermediate and deep focus earthquakes are reviewed on the basis of earthquake catalogs in past 100 vears. These earthquakes occurred at North-Eastern and South-Western parts of the Japan islands at a rate of 4 to 5 times per year. The earthquake catalogs indicate that only the intermediate depth earthquakes, with magnitude exceeding 7.5 and focal depth shallower than 150 km, caused destructive damages. However, the damage rank is lower than the typical interplate earthquakes along the Japan trench such as the 1968 Tokachi-oki earthquake (M=7.9).

Oga Earthquake of 1939 was a large inland earthquake with magnitude 6.8 and claimed 27 lives and 479 house collapses in Akita Prefecture.Concentration of damage was found in Oga peninsula and several villages were completely destroyed. Although detailed damages in Oga area were reported in many reconnaissance reports, the whole damage distribution is not so clear with less information on surrounding area. In this study, literature survey is done referring local newspaper articles at that time.In the result, more detailed damage distribution of houses, human, railroad, road and slope failure in the whole Akita prefecture are clarified.

A case study on various concrete recycling system in demolition of a thermal power plant was carried out from viewpoint of cost and environmental impact. In the study, one of the life cycle impact assessment method developed by Japanese national project "Life-cycle Impact assessment Method based on Endpoint modeling (LIME)" was introduced for the evaluation of effectiveness of the recycling system compared to only reusing for roadbed gravel and/or backfilling material. In this study CO_2 emission, crude oil consumption, land use for waste disposal and use of natural aggregate are evaluated.

On 12 May 2008, the severe earthquake struck Sichuan province in China, which claimed 69,226 lives and injured 374,643 people. Drawing a lesson from this extremely strong earthquake, also as an important respect of urban disaster prevention, the evacuation area construction was carried out in many places in China after the Wenchuan Earthquake. Based on the collection of latest construction information and a site survey about facilities and surroundings of existed evacuation area, this report introduces and analyzes the construction condition of emergency evacuation areas in central zone of Beijing. It also discusses on some problems found in the survey.

In this study, we analyze drawing documents from the Rietveld Schröder Archif, in order to clarify the characteristics of the construction method of G. Th. Rietveld. The Schröder House is basically a brick structure, however the second floor is constructed of wood reinforced with steel, and has a balcony construction of reinforced concrete slab. The roof of the second floor also uses steel, which allows for the creation of a large open space. This combination of different construction materials is considered to be one of the significant architectural features of Schröder House.

Chusanren Building completed in 1963 was designed by Junzo Sakakura, of which design feature is floating volume covered with green tiles and warped eaves. It has experienced its renovation many times, and interestingly the owner itself has decided each renovation policy, without asking Sakakura. I summarized how it has been renovated and evolved, through architectural drawings, repair records, interviews, and confirmation of the current conditions. Consequently, it became clear that the parts of the building related to its design feature are mostly maintained, and only the other parts are functionally updated for its purpose from time to time.

More than half a century since the establishment of the incentive zoning system in the United States and Japan, some of privately owned public spaces are under inactive public use and inadequate management. This study aims to clarify the concept and contents of the new design standard for privately owned public space established in NYC Zoning Resolution Amendment in 2007, and to obtain insight into the method of inducing spatial planning to enhance public use of the spaces. The study shows that the design standard detailed the ways to qualify proposed plan and the transparent process to certificate permission.

Decarbonization became one of the important issues for tackling global warming in Japan. Both housing and transport sectors should reduce energy consumptions particularly in existing residential areas cooperation between them. However, national policies only indicate sector-specific initiatives, and it is not clear how to develop coordinated measures in both sectors. This study examines the environmental performance of each sector and the effectiveness of the project by introducing environmental measures using EV, energy conservation and renewable energy, to decarbonize in existing residential areas. As a result, introduction of coordinated measures is effective in terms of environmental and business feasibility.

The attic in a house can be utilized for storage space but the thermal condition may not be suitable for such usage. In order to keep temperature in attic within a moderate range, it is well known that improvement of insulation and solar reflectance of roof are very effective but the combined effect of roof insulation and solar reflectance has not been discussed. In this study, such combined effect is examined on the basis of measured data in full scale house models and results of numerical simulations. The simulated results show good correspondence to measured data and numerical simulations under various conditions are conducted. This paper also gives the charts in which appropriate insulation performance and solar reflectance of roof can be selected according to requirement for attic space.

Recent geoinformatic technology is one of the significant fields in the digital earth era. This paper demonstrates a trial of making urban recovery digital archive of Edo-Tokyo on Google Earth as one of the case studies. The digital archive consists of 119 maps/pictures from 1838 to 1997 of three important areas in Tokyo (Marunouchi, Otemachi, Kyobashi, and Nihonbashi), which represent its dramatic historical change including the recovery process from Tokyo Earthquake in 1923 and the destruction in 1945 due to the World War II. Using some functions (overlay, timescale, and place mark), it enables us to understand urban transition of Tokyo.

In this paper, we measured ground vibrations excited by rhythmic actions of large audience at an outdoor concert. This kind of noticeable ground vibration is excited by large audience at least over 1,000. However, our knowledge of this vibration is based on vibration tests excited by several people. So, we carried out this measurement. As a result, the following conclusions are obtained. 1) The vibrational energy can be concentrated in a narrow band even if the vibration is excited by large audience. 2) The effect of audience size reduces the high frequency components of the exciting force.

For the central stations in big cities that serve regional area, it is impossible to discontinue the railway operations and difficult to transfer the railway tracks. The passengers’ safety and convenience need to be secured at first in order to start the development of the stations. This paper describes the case of JR Hakata Station project which solved such issues in the large central station development which were restricted by urban conditions, using various structural methods and techniques.

The life span of external insulation building which is related to the speed of concrete's neutralization has connection with the air permeability of external insulation method. This study generally measures the air permeability of external insulation method, and examines the restraint effect of neutralization in external insulation method from the accelerating test of concrete's neutralization. In addition, it described the relations between the air permeability of external insulation method and the restraint effect of neutralization.

To shorten the period until emergency temporary housing is put into service after a disaster occurs, it is necessary to automate the design of prefabricated emergency temporary housing units. In this paper, we have developed and evaluated a program that runs on BIM, which automatically creates BIM design models of prefabricated emergency temporary housing units and design documents based on them with as little manual operation as possible. As a result, 88% prefabricated building components and 55% non-prefabricated building components were correctly calculated automatically, and the drawing preparation time was reduced by 70% compared to the conventional method.
