This paper clarifies historical value of the former library stacks in Utsunomiya University: masonry building built of Ooya-stone in 1924 and reinforced concrete building with Ooya-stone wall built in 1957. Through literature research and measurement investigation, it is clarified that they have historical value as construction and design features of local Ooya-stone and as components of campus landscape in Taisho-era.

At the September 11, 2001, New York World Trade Center Towers did not collapse immediately after the aircraft impacts, despite the localized damage. Thus, the reserve capacity to the phenomenon besides assumption was called "redundancy", and after the WTC two towers' collapse, when taking the safety of a building into consideration, it had been recognized to be important property. In order that a building structure could not collapse and be secure safety to the load beyond anticipation on its structural design like the impulsive load by a collision, explosion, etc., it is important the building structure possesses structural redundancy. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the overall damage and the local damage and its structural redundancy against the aircraft impact equivalent to that in WTC for the Japanese typical 50 story high-rise steel building.

The summary describes a rehabilitation work for practical use on the building 2 (formerly library) in Waseda University. The examination identified the importance of the building 2 for the university, the process of construction, the preceding rehabilitation work, etc. The rehabilitation of shikkui ceilings and the seismic reinforcement were conducted, preserving its cultural value. “T. T-WALL”, the wall for reinforcement, looking like the bookstack, was developed this time, reflecting an ideology by Tachu Naito, who designed the building 2 structurally. It may be one of the first attempts for rehabilitation work to inherit an ideology of a structural designer.

The purpose of this paper is to develop of town planning workshop using Minecraft through clarifying reproduction, understanding spaces and discussion. The possibility of reproduction is Minecraft can reproduce the large scale. The problem is Minecraft cannot reproduce small scale. The possibility of understanding the space is participants can understand a city and buildings by using two viewpoints of overlook and the ground level. The problem is participants cannot understand the small scale. The possibility of discussion is discussions influence each other by adjusting with the facilitator. The problem is participants do not discuss to lose themselves in operating.

‘Crofting’ is the traditional tenancy system including traditional culture, land use system in Scotland. Farmers are called ‘Crofter’ renting land from land owners. Crofting village has similarity with mountainous villages in Japan which have a traditional bond, collective work, traditional way of thinking. The paper aim to clarify the present situation of crofting village in viewpoint of sustainability and spatial construction principal. The principal is that keeping fertility and equality among crofters which made spatial character of crofting village, whether principals of Japanese village tend to protect lands from disaster and utility of water supply in general.

The purpose of this report is to survey Kenzo Tange’s correspondence with participants in the eighth conference of the International Congresses of Modern Architecture (CIAM VIII). These materials are stored at the archive of Ms. Michiko Uchida. Tange’s correspondence with Walter Gropius, Josep Luís Sert, and Takamasa Yoshizaka in particular highlights the preparations he made before traveling abroad. The analysis of the letters Tange sent to his wife revealed what he thought about reconstruction in Europe, modernist architecture, and what urban design should be like in Japan.

This study aims to investigate to what extent current Japanese Montessori nursery schools embody the physical elements of the environment suggested by Maria Montessori. Based on these elements, a questionnaire was constructed and mailed to a total of 701 Montessori and non-Montessori nursery schools all over Japan. Replies from 95 and 192 schools (Montessori, non-Montessori, respectively) were analyzed. It was indicated that: (a) Montessori schools embody significantly more elements than non-Montessori ones; (b) Montessori schools maintain their policy of providing various sizes of tables and a special room for afternoon nap that will support children’s self-directed activities.

We carried out questionnaires to make clear actual situations how the office workers took for a change (to refresh themselves). 95.4% of office workers regarded a refreshment as a requirement, and 83.7% had actually refreshed themselves in the office. Especially people thought that refreshing gave a clue to the solution. Many workers took a break for a refreshment at their desks or in washrooms, with drinking, chattering and looking out of the windows for 10 minutes or less. They thought that a window was important in the room for a refreshment. A lot of valuable information to design rooms for a refreshment was obtained.

The serious flood disaster occurred at the river basin of Kinu-river in September of 2015. The disaster was called “Kanto-Tohoku heavy rain fall in September 2015”. In this disaster, the levee of Kinu-river was breached, and the flood flow had spread over the urban area of Joso city in Ibaraki prefecture. In this study, research on flood resistant architectures was reviewed. Also, the numerical simulation on the flood flow was performed. And, the reason why the houses had been swept away was discussed on the basis of the result of simulation. Furthermore, a necessity of hazard maps considering an inundation depth and a flood velocity was pointed out.

In order to consider the simple method of seismic diagnosis of conventional Wooden House using of microtremor measurements, we investigated 28 two-storied houses.By this investigation, we proposed the formula composed of the natural frequency of microtremor measurements, and the joint reduction coefficient determined by building year.This formula reveals a correlation with the evaluation value of seismic diagnosis.

In this study, we implemented the street furniture “BOLLARD TABLE” at the Oote-Mall in the central area of Toyama City, and verified its effectiveness. As a result, it was found that the “BOLLARD TABLE” creates a well-designed staying space that gives users a sense of openness and the character of the Oote-Mall. These findings will provide insights for the development of street furniture that provides a new way to enjoy urban space while ensuring safety considering the COVID-19 pandemic.

The permanent ground displacement adjacent to the seismic fault is of great interest to many earthquake and structural engineers. The thin layer method is one of the advantageous calculation methods for the dynamic Green’s function in layered soil, which can also be applied to the static problem in terms of a summation of the eigenmodes. Evaluation of ground displacement due to seismic faults requires stress component calculation, which is firstly verified. We use improved calculation method to calculate stress components using secondary elements. Finally, permanent ground displacements are verified to show the feasibility of the proposed calculation methods by comparing with rigorous solutions.

Thin layered element method (TLM) is an efficient way for computation of Green’s functions. However, it requires unbounded domain represented by an absorbing boundary or layer. A perfectly matched layer (PML) is one of the highest accuracy techniques to absorb outgoing waves from a bounded domain. In this paper, I apply the PML to the TLM in order to improve calculation precision of elastic wave field in a layered half-space. The accuracy of this method is examined by comparing its results with theoretical solution. It is found that the PML gives good results when compared to conventional method.

The aim of this paper is to clarify the arrangement of elements and activities on street space through the practice of the Sidewalk Cafe in the Orion Street, Utsunomiya city. First, the activities through people’s postures and situation and their change are examined. Secondly, the arrangement of elements such as furnitures and advertisements in relationship to adjacent buildings are examined. By integrating them, the sets of the arrangements and activities are analyzed. Finally, through the sequence of the set, the characteristics of the street space are clarified.

In this paper, we evaluated the COP of room air-conditioners with variable capacity compressor. The evaluation method and process to lead functions of electricity consumption and cooling / heating output were shown. Coefficients to lead approximate functions of input and output were shown as well. Next, we compared the COP calculated by functions mentioned above and the COP measured in another test institution. As a result, it was confirmed that evaluation COP was identical with measurement COP. It developed that annual electricity consumption of variable-capacity air-conditioners was less than that of popular air-conditioners, because the COP at partial load was high.

This study explored the changes of space radiation dose rate both indoor and outdoor associated with a decontamination operation for a wooden house in a low dose area. As a result, the maximum space radiation dose rate measured at 1 m height from the floor inside the house before the decontamination operation was 0.19 µSv/h. The maximum space radiation dose rate after the decontamination operation was 0.12µSv/h. Furthermore, the results of a comparison of the space radiation dose rate between pre- and post-decontamination operation indicate a decrease in the rate at most measurement points, and the average reduction rate of the space radiation dose rate in the post-decontamination operation condition was around 20%.

To prevent COVID-19, the apartment housing was filled with more people for a longer time while at home in Japan. These conditions are thought to have produced something close to the maximum noise load of the apartment housing. In order to better understand the reaction of the residents to this situation, we decided to conduct a questionnaire and collect data. As a result, compared to before stay home, the number of sounds that were heard and worrisome during stay home increased to 1.3 times. In addition, about 10% of the residents were involved in noise problems during stay home.

The bathroom has a high humidity environment along with the kitchen and washroom. In particular, the mold contamination in the bathroom is widely recognized to affect to health and an aesthetic problem. Although many surveys on the thermal environment of the bathrooms have been conducted, only a little attention has been paid to the inside of the thermal environment in bathtub apron, and these surveys and researches are not sufficient. In this study, we report the results of a survey on the thermal environment around the bathroom, including the inside of the apron, and the habitat environment of wet mold.

Three types of humidity-variable vapor retarder were focused and their water vapor transmission properties in the directions from hydrophilic layer to hydrophobic layer and vice versa were measured by cup method. Eight different relative humidity conditions in test cup were controlled by desiccants, aqueous solutions, or water. In the high relative humidity range, the vapor transmission resistances were positively small for all three films and in both directions. In the low relative humidity range, however, the resistances were enough high in one direction but mildly low in the other direction. Furthermore, the resistances measured by desiccants and those by aqueous solutions had an opposite trend, that indicated that the dry cup method with desiccants should not be used for humidity-variable film with hydrophilic layer.
