This study aims to clarify reality of projects, effectiveness of base places, and problems through study of three projects for dual-habitation without own a home. Findings are as follows; 1) A host of place running dual-habitation business by meeting a particular need. 2) Base place have the effect of reducing the economic burden, cutting down on a burden of maintenance, and showing the variety of dual-habitation styles. 3) A host of place acts as a mediator and creates a weakly link between guests and local residents. 4) It is effective to incorporate regular usage business with temporary usage business.

This paper introduces the Aratama-suido-zu (“zu” meaning original blueprints) proposal for the Aratama-suido project to supply water in Tokyo’s Aratama District. Construction began in 1926, but in 1927, Japan’s government called for the project to be scaled back. The revised Aratama-suido was presented in the 1931 Aratama-suido-shi (“shi” meaning official document). The Aratama-suido-shi noted the number and locations of the project’s buildings in both the original and revised plans, but not the original designs for the buildings. This has made it difficult to compare them with the final designs, though attempts have been made (Masuda, 2006). The author clarifies the original designs, revealing how the engineers’ thought processes evolved.

This study is aim to consider the factor of forming pedestrian network and of establishing sustainable maintenance and management around Osaki Station. Osaki area has had traffic connection problems around Osaki Station and not had enough area of open space, before the redevelopment project in 1980s. The large-scale pedestrian network formed by pedestrian walkways to overcome the area’s geographic problems. Along with the redevelopment project the varieties of management forms in the pedestrian walkway around Osaki Station were formed.

In this study, it aimed to clarify about the housing problem and the environmental improvement at Yau Lai Estate, in order to grasp the present condition and the measure of HKHA public rental housing in Hong Kong. The aging-residents problem, the SARS problem and the environmental problem are the big issues in the newly developed project, the redevelopment project and the large-scale repair project in HKHA public rental housing in recent years. The measure for the universal design to the aging-residents problem, the hygiene supervision and living manners to the SARS problem and the energy saving, noise, and tree planting to the environmental problem have been taken in HKHA public rental housing.

The Concept of the universal design is necessary in the design of pedestrian space. The pedestrian space is repaired in structural design, but the resting place of a side walk is not fully ensured. The aim of this paper is to discuss how to improve resting place from the results of investigation. As the contents of investigation, the benches of the sidewalk on the outskirts of a station are investigated and the investigated benches were divided into 5 groups. As the results, it is cleared that the plan of establishment of bench by the citizens should be reconsider.

An interview survey was carried out on the hotel employees concerning the human behavior in a fire at Shirahama. The employees were interviewed about time interval from awaring unusual occurrence to evacuation start. The information obtained by the interview survey was arranged as the figure of the time series. The time axis of the figure refered survey of fire brigade and so on. Further, the figure which indicates the condition of fire, the propagation range of smoke and burnt odor and human behavior in initial fire was developed. As the summarization, it was clear why human evacuation was successful in this hotel fire.

This study quantitatively examines the behavior of pedestrians moving close to a person with a trolley bag or baby stroller. The data will prove useful in estimating how much extra space needs to be allowed for those with such gear, for example in a railroad station or other transport facility. The experiment was conducted on a crowded street in a Tokyo business district during the morning commute. A male assistant hired for the experiment was asked to walk in three directions with respect to pedestrian flow in four conditions for a total of 12 experimental situations. The study revealed how large evasive space is required in each situation.

Taking into account the earthquake-resistant design standards in effect when the building was designed, new earthquake-resistant design criteria were established for the retrofit, to check the earthquake-resistant safety of the retrofit design. Structural and functional considerations led to a choice of laminated rubber for the isolator material. The results of vibration analysis using a mass system model demonstrated that the earthquake motion input into the building would be reduced substantially by the retrofitwork. It was also shown that the work would substantially meet the earthquake-resistant design criteria. Three-dimensional vibration analysis was also carried out using a solid frame model to calculate the margin of safety of each structural member would be earthquake-resistant.

The architectural drawings and documents of the works of Vann Molyvann were discovered anew from the archives of Obayashi Corporation in Japan. This paper introduces these documents and clarifies that Vann Molyvann and Obayashi Corporation were in collaboration in the 1950-60s. Through the literature and hearing surveys with Vann Molyvann and former Obayashi staffs, this paper confirms that these documents include the architectural drawings of Chaktomuk Conference Hall and Preah Suramarit National Theatre, prepared by Vann Molyvann, as well as structural drawings and calculations of Cambodian Parliament and Preah Suramarit National Theater, prepared by Obayashi Corporation for Vann Molyvann.

A questionnaire on neighborhood noise disputes was carried out to persons in charge of the noise problem in municipal offices in the whole country. A number of the answers was 479 and the recovery rate was 62%. Through the result, the conflict concerning a dog barking increases in small cities, and that is anticipated to increase in the future. There were arguments pros and cons about the regulation against the neighborhood noise. In the free description, it is mainly commented that the neighborhood noise dispute depends on the lack of the neighborhood association.

This paper reports the framework of the new view protection plan composed of the London Plan (2004) and London View Management Framework (2007) published by GLA. This new plan:1) gives Mayor of London the important role to preserve and enhance the views from the broader perspective;2) classifies views into four types and designates 26 important views;3) establishes two management approaches, Geometric Definition and Qualitative View Assessment;4) shows the location of designated views precisely by using coordinates and height;5) relaxes height restriction due to narrowing width of viewing corridors;

This study focuses on the street name system for supporting and guiding pedestrians, and aims to clarify the effects and to point out the issues by introducing the system through the social experiment at Tenjin District in Fukuoka City. Firstly, through the questionnaire survey of visitors, shop owners and guides, we evaluate the street name system by analysis their impression. Second, we point out the issues how to name the streets and how to place the signposts. Finally, we propose the methods to improve the street name system.

A traditional wooden five-storied pagoda was structurally designed on the basis of the performance design concept against wind, earthquake and snow loads. The present paper describes the design loads evaluation, the non-linear structural analyses, and the strengthening techniques. The static wind and the earthquake response analyses were successfully performed in consideration of the key mechanisms such as the semi-rigidity at the column-beam joints. The calculated story drifts showed that the strengthened structure would be safe against the design loads for the return period of 200 years.

The one of Japanese traditional Town-houses called "Nagaya" is characterized by the stores and houses on a street of pre-Modern and Modern Osaka City exceedingly. Those have repeated enlargement and renovation at the complicated modernized situation in Osaka, and yet some of them have continued to exist. The purpose of this study is to extract mechanism of change from chronological simulation based on 'Tipologia Edilizia', and to recognize necessary conditions of continuation. As a result, We found that the owner and residents have continued the maintenance based on weak traditional system in spite of under the situation of inevitable modenization.

This paper presents a numerical simulation method to predict and evaluate the thermal environment in the developed urban locations where void-brick walls with evaporative cooling effect were applied, using the 3D CAD-based simulator developed by the authors. The thermal modeling of a void-brick wall was proposed from the experimental data and calculation algorism of its surface temperature was integrated into the simulator. A case study was carried out to quantify the thermal improvement of the void-brick wall applied to a bus waiting arbor. The simulation results show that the developed simulation tool can be used as a design tool to evaluate the thermal effect of the void-brick wall on the urban built environment.

After Kaitakushi period, Dairy barn with gambrel roof was transplanted in Hokkaido from USA. There are many Farmers' Bulletins by U.S. Department of Agriculture in Hokkaido University Library and in National Agricultural Research Center for Hokkaido Region, which presented the Dairy barn with gambrel roof. And also, there are some books that presented the construction and the ventilation for Dairy barn with gambrel roof. Those books for farm building from USA and USDA Farmers' Bulletins were referred for the introduction of Dairy barn with gambrel roof.

We have developed assessment systems for buildings known as CASBEE (Comprehensive Assessment System for Building Environmental Efficiency). CASBEE for new construction and that for existing building were already developed and reported in former reports. We have newly developed the assessment system for renovation. Then we would report the outline of it.

We describe the history and the present state of the Official Residence for the Commander of Karafuto-Guards, which was completed in 1908. We also deal with its suspected designer, Army Architect Yasushi Tamura (1878-1942), who is known as the designer of the Divisional Headquarters Office of the Imperial Guards. The official residence has high value in the modern architectural history not only because it is one of the oldest buildings of the Japanese colonial period in Sakhalin, but also because it was a dwelling house built for the people of highest class in Sakhalin.

This paper shows the importance of planning and management in the process of community based planning. As a successful example of the planning and management, the case of SUNAGAWA City in Hokkaido is reviewed in this study. After analyzing this case, four points became essential condition: 1)tying between project of Community Renovation Grants and planning of community design, 2)be connected with physical planning and management program, 3)relationship between civic organization, public authority and third-party, 4)interactive discussion between these three organization need to make newly proposal of community design.
