A simple torque sensor for a tendon-driven manipulator is proposed. The finger joint torque around a drive pulley is proportional to the tension difference on both ends of the pulley. With a coupling mechanism between tendons, this tension difference can be measured directly without detecting individual tendon tensions. The tension differential-type torque (T.D.T.) sensor is based on this idea and is useful for compensating for friction existing in the transmission system of the manipulator. However, so far, the T.D.T. sensor needs at least one tension pulley to support a driving tendon. This paper shows that it is possible to design a T.D.T. sensor without any tension pulley maintaing its basic principle. A torque sensor installation on the movable link makes it possible to eliminate the tension pulley and downsize it.

Friction in joint driving systems constitutes an important source of nonlinearity that makes it difficult to achieve high-precision control. In this paper, a method of estimating friction is proposed, which requires a joint torque signal, armature current and motor angular velocity. Considering disturbance rejection, a position control method is proposed as follows. Vibration is restrained by bandpass joint torque feedback, and high-precision position control is realized by friction feedforward compensation. Assignment of pole distribution is employed to determine three control coefficients, and the effect of disturbance rejection is compared and evaluated for three kinds of pole distributions. Properties of the proposed control are discussed, and experimental results are also Presented.

Elucidation of the vibration mechanism of winged insect from the viewpoint of bionic design might aid in development and design of the driving systems for small- or micro-size actuators, because some flying insects easily overcome scale effects through use of wing vibration and achieve flight with high robustness and speed under conditions of large air viscosity. The aim of this report is to describe a theoretical model of the dynamics of relatively large-size insect wings powered by the direct-flight-muscle and of the dynamics of small-size insect wings powered by the indirect-flight-muscle. Based on morphological consideration of these two types of insect wing dynamics, the equations of motion for the wings are formulated. In the model, the dry friction-type and van der Pol-type forces are employed to power the wings of direct-flight-muscle-type insects, and the periodic impulsive force is assumed to power the wings of indirect-flight-muscle-type insects. Applying the equations of motion to the wings of insects such as dragonflies and flies, the wing vibration is analyzed under various conditions. From the numerical results, the vibration mechanism of two types of flying insects' wings is clarified.

Structure borne noise is dominant in vehicle interior noise as frequencies below approximately 300Hz. Spindle force is a critical factor in structure borne noise for vehicle interior noise. To research the vibration characteristic of a rolling tire is essential for prediction of spindle force. This paper describes vibration analysis of a tire on the static and operational condition. Firstly, the surface vibration velocities are measured in the operational condition to comprehend the vibration behavior of a rolling tire using the scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometers. Secondly, the tire vibration model based on the cylindrical shell theory is build up. The basic equation, including the effects of the initial tension and the Coriolis force due to rotation, is derived by thin rotating cylindrical shell model and Hamilton principal. The results of the experiment and the theoretical analysis for a rolling tire are presented. Consequently, it is found that same shape of traveling-wave modes occur for a rolling tire, and the excited frequency of forward wave is different from that of backward wave. Finally, it is revealed that whether the rotation effect have affect on the vibration characteristics of a rolling tire.

A high-speed microfabrication technique using a focused laser beam was developed. A conventional CAD/CAM system was used, and the beam was scanned mechanically by attaching both optical mirror arrays and a focal lens to the column of an ultraprecision machining center. The measured groove width and pocket depth obtained by grooving and pocket machining were used as the tool diameter and the axial depth of cut, respectively. Glasslike carbon with a laser beam absorptivity of over 80% and a hardness of 650 MHv was employed as a workpiece. It was verified through a machining test that pseudo-3-dimensional concave prisms can be fabricated by digging square pockets with different square sizes but the same pocket depth in the negative Z direction. Shifting the laser's focal point away from the work surface can decrease the depth of the square pocket, so that high-speed roughing by adjusting the focal point on to the work surface and highspeed finishing by shifting the focal point away from the work surface can be conducted.

This paper presents a method to suppress the vertical bending vibration of railway vehicle carbody by using carbody-truck (or bogie) interaction. It is shown from the running test result of an actual Shinkansen vehicle that the bending vibration can greatly be reduced when the rigidity of carbody-truck connecting elements in the longitudinal direction (i.e., rubber bush rigidity of traction links and anti-yaw dampers) Kx is set at the optimum value. The mechanism of the effect to reduce such vibration is analyzed theoretically. As a result, it is found that the truck frames and wheelsets act as dynamic vibration absorbers against the bending vibration of carbody. A formula to adjust Kx to its suitable value is derived. The accuracy and validity of the formula is evaluated numerically.

In this study we aim to realize an actuator that is comparable with a natural muscle from a viewpoint of flexibility, the output force and the responses. In the 1st report we constructed the Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuator protected by “a rolled film tube” with the high heat resistance and the high flexibility, and it is named “the unit cell”. In this report we constructed an actuator named “a motor unit” with the larger output force by bunching up 7 unit cells, and the characteristics of the motor unit are investigated by the experiments in which the motor unit is driven in Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM). The result of the experiments shows that the static characteristics of the output force and the displacement to the input pulse frequency in the motor unit near proportion relations in comparison with the unit cell still more and the output force increases almost 7 times as large as the unit cell. It is found out that the time constant of the motor unit becomes larger compared to that of the unit cell, and the power conversion efficiency falls when pulse width is extended to improve the time constant.

Rolling stock has been generally inspected and maintained on the basis of the preventive maintenance. However, the reliability of the sensors and information technology has drastically improved, and with this background the objective of this research is to develop the condition monitoring system for the bogies of the Shinkansen cars. This paper describes an algorithm for detecting fault in some parts of bogies. This scheme is based on the statistic analysis of vibration acceleration during some period. This algorithm named peak average method detects the difference of the vibration peak distribution between fault cases and normal ones. For examining the possibility to detect fault in the bogie, experiments simulating some fault modes in bogie parts are conducted in the rolling stock test plant at Komaki Research Center of CJRC. From the results of these experiments, we can show the reliability and the validation of this scheme for monitoring conditions of Shinkansen bogies developed in this research.

To materialize actual designs in computer-aided design, we presented a method to determine structural dimensions in order to make all design requirements accomplish their respective objective values, using the attainability and simultaneous equations with several unknowns. However, most of the designs have no theoretical design formula or sensitivity coefficients. This paper presents an approximation method to identify sensitivity coefficients by trial production evaluations of the designs. The coefficient matrix is specified between k th revised values of the attainabilities and k th revised values of the design variables, and made into a square or a triangular matrix by neglecting insignificant variables. The matrix is solved iteratively until all coefficients converge. This paper also presents a multiobjective satisfactory design using the identified coefficients to prove the effectiveness of the identification, comparing the identified coefficients with the theoretical ones.

It has been shown in our previous report that DYC is not compatible with the tire force usage equalization and it is important to consider total tire force F_x and F_y as feedback signals for DYC being compatible with the tire force usage equalization. However the driving stability of the electric vehicle is affected how the weighing matrix's coefficients of the criterion function are chosen because our control logic based on the optimal control of the yaw moment, total tire force F_x and F_y, and the tire force usage equalization. In this paper, we proposed a method for the determination of the weighting coefficient of our control logic with quality engineering. By using this, we can make clear the relation between the optimal control error and the driving stability of the electric vehicle how the weighting coefficients are chosen. It was found that the controller using the optimal control having the weighting coefficients determined by the quality engineering method has robustness for the driving stability in various driving conditions. Therefore, it was effective to use quality engineering for vehicle dynamics control.

A logarithmic profile is an essentially optimal geometry for rolling machine elements such as bearing rollers and raceways. Under most conditions of loading, it yields less stresses to give longer endurance. Lundberg first suggested the basic profile, and some researchers followed him by modifying it to suit engineering requirements. The authors also proposed a mathematical optimization method for various profiles including a logarithmic one in roller bearing applications. In this paper, rolling contact fatigue life tests are carried out to make a comparison of logarithmic, standard partially crowned and modified partially crowned rollers when they are applied to cylindrical roller bearings. Results show that the logarithmic and modified partially crowned rollers are comparable in fatigue life, and outlast the standard partially crowed rollers if they are fully lubricated. On the other hand, under poor lubrication, the logarithmic rollers are found to yield outstanding fatigue life over the modified partially crowned ones.

This paper give a description of an experimental study of ultrasonic welding of ceramics and aluminium or copper. The ultrasonic welding technique can be carried out in many different ways, such as in direct welding of ceramics and metals, the coating of metal on ceramics surface by vacuum deposition, and in application of inserting of activated metals. The ultrasonic welding has made possible to weld various ceramics, such as SiO2, Al2O3, SrO, BaO, ZrO2, Si3N4, SiC, to aluminium or copper under the room temperature quickly and easily compared to other welding methods. For example, the ultrasonic welding of Al2O3 and aluminium could be finished under the condition of amplitude 23μm of ultrasonic horn top, welding pressure 20 MPa, required duration 0.3 s. The clean with a forced ultrasonic vibration of contact surface needs no surface treatment. Moreover, the material can be processed easily, and it gives out little heat, and hardly get weakness.

In this paper we describe the effect of die-sinking EDM under mirror finishing conditions on mirror surface properties of four-different types steel, SKD11, NAK55, PX5 and SKD61, which contain the free cutting element, sulfur. In particular, the influences of the quantity of sulfur on the machined steel surface, the composition and microstructure with die-sinking EDM. The following conclusions were obtained. 1) A mirror surface of steel containing more than 0.04% sulfur could not be realized. 2) In the case of steel with 0.1% sulfur, the surface property is dependent on the machining direction. 3) Pits are generated on the machined steel surface because the aggregated part of the MnS fiber preferentially melts with the circumferential base metal. In addition, the quantity and shape of pits change according to those of MnS. In the longitudinal section, the shape of the pit is a series of channels, whereas in the transverse section it is a cirele.

As manufacturing activities have been widely globalized, it is becoming more and more difficult to respond to changes quickly. It is also important to take a positive stand against environmental issues to pursue the sustainability of the global environment without wasting resources related to production activities. The purpose of this paper is to establish a lifecycle-oriented design method of production systems. For this end, we have developed prototype system for life-cycle simulator, which is constructed by a demand scenario generation module and a simulation assessment module. We also conducted a simple comparative experiment taking two configuration plans for a transfer line and a cell line as examples in order to verify the effectiveness of this proposed technology.

The present study is a fundamental approach to reveal the minute fluctuating pressures on three-dimensional blade surfaces of a basic propeller fan. Because, among the concerning physical quantities, the unsteady pressures on the rotating blades give us useful information for the fan flow and its sound-noise level. The authors correct the centrifugal-force effect, the gravitational-force effect and the other leading-error effects for accurate measurements of the minute pressures using a measuring technology developed by the authors (Hirata et al., 2009). As a result, we show the Reynolds-number effects and the spatial distributions on the blade of both time-mean pressure and pressure-fluctuation intensity.

A novel micro-mechanical probe for friction force microscopy has been presented. The probe has a double cantilever that is supported by a torsion beam. It measures the lateral force by detecting the deflection of the double cantilever and measures the vertical force by the torsion of the torsion beam. It can measure the two forces independently without the mechanical crosstalk. The force resolution is of the order of 1 nN. The probe can clarify the micro/nanotribological phenomena more accurately than conventional cantilever probes and provide useful information for the identification of material properties.

音響ホログラフィとソナーを融合させた三次元音響撮像法「ホログラフィック・ソナー撮像法」を提案した。これはFMチャ-プ音を対象物に照射し、反射音波を記録し、これにパルス圧縮および開口合成の処理をおこなって三次元映像を得るものである。この撮像方式での撮像性能を解析し、撮像装置の設計手順を明らかにした。また、空中音響実験によって、本撮像方式の撮像性能解析の妥当性と三次元撮像の可能性を示した。

The clamping force of a bolted joint is usually controlled by torque or angle at tightening. However the fatigue failure of bolted joints occures if the clamping force is loosened in service. Therefore the clamping force in service after tightening must be checked to avoid failure of bolted joints. In this study, a new method to detect the clamping force of bolted joints after tightening has been proposed, in which the clamping force is detected by pulling the protruding thread of the bolt through the nut on a bolted joint. The relationship between the pulling force and the displacement at the pulling point is measured to detect the apparent spring constant of the bolt. When the pulling force reaches the clamping force of bolted joint, the apparent spring constant varies markedly. Thus the clamping force of the bolted joint can be defined on the basis of the variation of the apparent spring onstant. The basic theory and the experimental verifications are presented.

This paper deals experimentally with the squeal and chatter phenomena generated in mountain bike disk brakes. First, the authors performed the traveling test using actual bicycle on downhill road in a mountain. As the results, there are two kinds of frictional self-excited vibrations in the bicycle disk brakes called by squeal with frequency of 1 kHz and by chatter with frequency of 500 Hz. In order to regenerate the squeal and the chatter, a bench test apparatus by actual bicycle was set up and their characteristics were experimentally examined. By using the bench test apparatus, it was made clear that their frequencies were independent of temperature of pad and rotating speed of rotor, and the chatter was generated in a certain limited region of high temperature though the squeal occurred in arbitrary temperature region of pad.

In this paper, the engineering evaluation method of the crucian fishing rods is performed. Principal component analysis and multiple regression analysis are performed to the results of the questionnaire about the performance of crucian fishing rods. As a result, the performance evaluation index "stiffness · strength", "weight", "top stop" are obtained and the performance evaluation equations of the crucian fishing rods are established. It is cleared that these equations are enough practical in the sight of degree of accuracy. Then, the design of crucian fishing rod is performed by using FE model. The design of the rod with targeted performance is become possible by solving the optimization problem setting the diameter of the rod as the design parameters and the Principal component score as the evaluation function. It is thought that these analysis methods are applied to the tailored design of fishing rod based on the sensory requirement of angler.
