The spread of wind energy converter is progressing in recent years and its capacity is becoming larger and larger. In order to capture more energy from the wind, it is important to analyze loss characteristics of wind generators for operating speed which is determined dependent on the wind speed. This paper presents a method to evaluate various losses in wind generator as a function of wind speed, which is based on the steady state analysis and thus the calculation can be performed quickly. By using the proposed method, wind turbine power, generator output, various losses, and the total energy efficiency are calculated for three types of wind speed data which are represented by a weibull function.

A systematic design methodology for discrete control systems is proposed, which is based on Galois field and Gröbner basis. The controller can be automatically designed using a model of the controlled plant. The controlled plant is represented on Galois field. Then the inverse function of the plant is derived using Gröber basis so that the input variables are explicitly obtained as the function of the state variable and reference variable. An illustrative example of a material handling system is shown. The proposed method will realize cost reduction in software development and an improvement of reliability and safety of the PLC based systems.

Many private railways and municipal railways in Japan use the Automatic Train Control (ATC) system as their train protection system. This system has the function to transmit the permitted speed, determined by the position of the preceding train, through the track circuit and indicate that speed in the driving cab and the function to apply brakes according to the permitted speed. Since this system applies brakes in several stages until the train reaches a halt, the application and release of brakes at each speed stage causes a loss and it is impossible to shorten the headway between two trains.We have developed a new system where the ground equipment transmits the stopping point only and the train is controlled autonomously based on the stopping point information. This system, called D-ATC hereafter, enables shorter train headways than the existing ATC with multi-stage braking. A prototype of this system was build and tested using an actual train in order to judge whether its commercial use is possible. This paper describes the proposal of D-ATC and results of the test runs.

Current sensing function is indispensable to modern intelligent power semiconductor devices to detect whether or not a load is driven at a predetermined power level and/or an overcurrent at the time of overload, in order to protect the load and the power device.In this paper, a new current sensing device technology is presented firstly, in which the operation principle is based on detecting voltage drop through a field effect resistance (FER) consisting of mainly channel resistance in DMOSFET. Our new current sensing device consists of DMOS, FER & voltage sensing cell, and lateral MOSFET operated as a temperature compensation resistor in a same chip. The FER-cell has the same structure as DMOS cell, and lateral MOSFET is electrically isolated from substrate by p-n junction. The accuracy of current sensing is within ±2% in a temperature range from -40 to 150°C.The new current sensing device technology which can be integrated easily into power MOSFETs realizes intelligent power MOSFETs with high accurate current sensing and control in a wide temperature range.

Salient-pole permanent magnet synchronous motors have been widely used in industrial applications for their high efficiency. To control these motors, knowledge of rotor position and velocity are necessary and expensive sensors have been used to detect these signals. Although many sensorless control algorithms have been developed for cylindrical permanent magnet motors, they cannot be applied for salient-pole machines without any approximation because of the complicated mathematical model, and this may lead to unstable problems. To solve this problem, new extended electromotive force models for synchronous motors have been proposed in this paper. The proposed models have a simple structure integrating position information both in the magnet and in the inductance into one extended electromotive force term. Using these models, no approximation is necessary. Experimental results show that the proposed model and method are valid.

This paper describes a PWM pulse pattern optimization method using the carrier frequency modulation (CFM) technique. This new technique is aiming at not only reducing the magnetic acoustic noises of the driven motors but also improving the performance of sinusoidal inverters.The PWM pulse patterns are basically controlled so that the time-integral function of voltage vectors in the space vector notation may draw a circular locus. In addition to this, the carrier frequency, practically the sampling frequency for inverter control, of PWM is also regulated so that a performance index (PI), which represents the degrees of achieving objectives, may be minimized. Here two PIs, one is for minimizing the distortion of output currents and the other is for minimizing the torque ripples of driven motors, are discussed respecively.Finally, CFM is implemented using a single-chip microprocessor, and the experimental results demonstrate the validity of the proposed mehtod.

Track circuit uses rail as a part of the circuit. The purposes of the track ciruit are 1) to detect the train, 2) to transmit signal to the train, and 3) to detect the rail break. There are two types in the track circuit. One adopts insulation joint at the end of the circuit, and the other one is jointless. The insulation joint demands a lot of effort to maintain and control. Furthermore it costs extremely, and it has an insulation material that becomes one of the weak points of the rail track. There are some methods to make a jointless track circuit, but it has several problems. The biggest one is that the border of the track circuits becomes fuzzy. The next one is the interference of plural track circuit signals. Nevertheless jointless track circuit has a big priority. First it does not demand an insulation joint and impedance bonds. Second it is very easy to divide.Jointless track circuits are adopted in the area of the sharp curve where impossible to install insulation joints on the Shinkansen line. Also several conventional lines and private railways adopt this system. Furthermore several European high speed train system also use jointless track circuit. In JR, short distance track circuit for level crossing control is jointless, but normal track circuit has an insulation joint, because there is a law restriction of track circuits border ambiguity. To solve the problem, the author had worked out simple jointless track circuit only with induction coils, which border characteristic is very excellent. Furthermore it does not have a strong frequency characteristic that it can be applied to any kinds of frequencies. In this paper, new type of jointless track circuit is proposed, it is theoretically analyzed, and basic experiments had succeeded that they are reported.

A lot of researches on chaos have been made. However, most of them are just investigation using computer simulation, and researches on actual chaotic system is very few. It is well known that double pendulum is a representative chaotic system. This paper deals with an actual handmade double pendulum and stabilize its chaotic motion by the extended OGY method, which we propose. First, by using reconstructed attractor which is a state space to express chaotic time series, the motion of the pendulum is analyzed. Next, the proposed new control method is applied and proved that very small control input can stabilize the system. Finally, it is compared to the disturbance observer method, and shows the superiority of the proposed control method.

High voltage adjustable speed drive systems offer significant advantages in many applications such as a fan, pump, or blower. In these applications, the adjustable speed drive systems achieves a higher level of system efficiency.Usually, low voltage inverters with output transformer were used for a high voltage induction motor drive system. Recently, direct drive inverter system without output transformer has proposed and investigated. This inverter system is composed of single phase unit inverters and outputs multilevel voltages.In this paper, pulse width modulation (PWM) technique suitable for high voltage direct drive inverter systems are discussed. At first, conventional multi-level PWM techniques based on the sub-harmonic method are shown and evaluated using time domain simulation. Next, new PWM method is proposed. This method has advantages that a modulation principle is very simple, distortion of the output voltage is very low, and well balanced switching losses among the unit inverters are achieved. Finally, simulation and experimental result are shown to illustrate the effectiveness of this method.

It is well known that the direct drive systems not to use the reduction gears with the clearane and backlash are required for the highly precise position control, whose motor must have high torque at very low speed. The authors have developed a new motor for this purpose and named PM vernier motor.In this paper, it is explained at first what is PM vernier motor, the construction and principle, and then the theory able to calculate the torque and how to control its speed are described. It is also shown that the calculated values of torque were agreed well with the experimental results.

On a variable speed control of motors used in industrial plants and industrial robots, a shaft torsional oscillation is often generated when a motor and a load are elastically coupled with a shaft. Such an oscillation may result in damage to the machine.<br>This paper is intended to theoretically explain the fact that a shaft torsional oscillation can be suppressed by using the digital observer regardless of the presense of the gear.<br>In this paper, we conducted tests on two shafts with resonant frequencies at 10.5 Hz and 16 Hz using a full-digital control equipment for controlling DC motors with the digital observer in order to confirm the oscillation control effects.

A train scheduling method to minimize the trip time of passengers under restricted electrical energy is investigated in this paper. This method assumes that the consumed electrical energy of one railway artery, all the vehicles of which are local trains, is restricted to a certain value. The endogenous variables of this method are the running time for each interstation, the consumed energy for each interstation, and the number of vehicles. The solution depends on the Kuhn-Tucker theorem on the constraints of both the number of vehicles and the total amount of consumed energy per unit time. This method enables us to determine the running time for each interstation and the number of vehicles according to the solution, which gives priority to small changes in the running time in interstations over decreasing the number of vehicles. Numerical examples verify the effect of reducing the time increment caused by the restriction in some artery without reducing the number of vehicles. The results also imply that the effect on passengers of each energy-saving method differs for every traffic artery.

This paper proposes a new high speed robust tracking control system based on both “Zero Phase Error Tracking” (ZPET) control system and robust servo system for an optical disk recording system. In the optical disk recording systems (for example CD-R), the tracking servo system must have the complete tracking response whose error is less than 0.1 [μm] for an amplitude of 100 [μm] of reference input signal. However, its detecting signal is only a tracking error. For this purpose, this paper proposes a new estimation method of the reference input signal by using only tracking error, and realizes the high speed robust tracking servo system with ZPET control. Moreover, this paper considers the saturation of controller output. The experimental and simulation results point out that the proposed system has a quick and precise tracking response.

In this paper, a novel single-phase sinusoidal PWM voltage source inverter (VSI) is proposed. The inverter has an additional arm to the normal single-phase bridge circuit. The two auxiliary self-turn-off devices of the branch avail to adopt the composite PWM control, which contributes to reduce the ripple in the ac output current. Also, the inverter has a LC series resonance circuit tuned to twice the system frequency f, which is connected in parallel with the smoothing capacitor on the dc side. This absorbs the ac component included the dc pulsating current with 2f. Consequently, the capacity of the smoothing capacitor is drastically reduced. As an example of the application of this VSI, the utility connected residential photovoltaic power generation system is shown. In the system, the smooth dc current without pulsation is supplied from PV array, and the VSI provides a sinusoidal ac current for domestic lords and the utility line.

This paper describes improvement for wheel slip and re-adhesion control for electric locomotives with induction motor vector control. Compared with the conventional slip frequency method, the torque response is much improved by the vector control. By referring the re-adhesion process for the traditional rectifier controlled do-motor locomotives, suitable torque reduction to an induction motor is applied in accordance with the wheel slip speed. The test results by the series EH500 locomotive for Japan Freight Railway Company, show much improvement for the re-adhesion process especially when a steeper torque reduction ratio is applied.
