This paper deals with the high-frequency equivalent circuits of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) driven by a PWM inverter. The leakage current (common-mode current) flows through stray capacitance among stator windings and iron core (frame) of an synchronous motor at the switching instants of inverter transistors. A high-frequency equivalent circuits of PMSM are derived based on the frequency characteristics of the high-frequency zero-phase-impedance and line-to-line-impedance of synchronous motor. The validity of the proposed equivalent circuit is confirmed by simulation considering parasitic capacitance of the inverter.

Permanent magnet synchronous (PM) motors are widely used for industrial applications. In traction and spindle drives, the constant power operation and wide speed range are desirable. With DC motor drives, these are achieved by the appropriate reduction of the field current as the speed increases. In the PM motor, the direct control of magnet flux is not available. The air-gap flux, however, can be weakened by the direct axis armature reaction. This control technique is called "flux-weakening" instead of "field-weakening". This paper describes a variable speed drive system of PM motor for the constant power and wide speed range operations. In the proposed control system, a novel flux-weakening technique is applied. The current vector is controlled so that the maximum torque per armature current can be obtained at low speeds and the terminal voltage is kept within its limited value at high speeds. The control performances are examined by the simulations and the experimental results.

There have been growing demands for automatic placement of parts on printed circuit boards (PCBs). Since the parts have wide variety in size and these parts should be placed under various constraints, the automatization of parts placement is a very difficult task. The authors proposed a method using the genetic algorithm (GA) for the automatic placement on highly dense PCBs. The study was, however, done on an imaginary board. Many factors, such as gaps between parts, lining up of parts of same type, etc. were not considered.This paper presents three new coding methods for the automatic placement on the PCBs. The three proposed methods incorporate rotating angle of parts, gaps between parts, forming of parts of same type in lines as well as dense placement of parts. Actual PCBs are used for showing and comparing the effects of the new coding methods. The results show that the proposed methods are feasible for the automatic placement of parts on highly dense PCBs.

For computer aided design (CAD)/design automation (DA) for printed circuit board (PCB), automatic placement of parts has been strongly needed. It is, however, very difficult to realize the automatic placement, since the parts have wide variety in size and these parts should be placed under various constraints.This paper studies a method of placement on the PCB using genetic algorithm (GA). This paper also studies an application of a new representing method for maintaining diversity of chromosomes to the GA. Simulations are done to show the feasibility of the new automatic placement method. A chromosome is converted into multiple phenotypes by the methods.

If sufficient time is allowed for detection, the aerial ultrasonic pulsed radar sensor can detect reflecting objects without being unduly subject to the effect of wind. When used for safety assurance like obstacle detection of automated guided vehicles, the pulsed radar sensor must have such fail-safe characteristics that it can monitor an area wilder than that it is originally designed to monitor when it malfunctions and can produce a hazard-signifying output signal when it stops. The ultrasonic pulsed radar sensor discussed here is in its normal operating state when a short-distance transmitter/receiver signal is received as inspection signal for monitoring its operation. The pulse signal reflected from the obstacle in question, operation monitoring signal, and gate signal are added and converted into a ternary signal. The ternary signal is converted into a binary signal that indicates the normal state of the sensor (logic 1) or the faulty state of the sensor or detection of the obstacle (logic 0). A fail-safe pulsed radar can be realized in this way.

A new PWM method of the three-level inverter using a digital signal processor, which is useful for large capacity instantaneous current controlled GTO inverters is presented.<br>In case of the three-level inverter, short pulses are always necessary to output medium voltage vectors. The output waveform deteriorates from the ideal PWM waveform by the influence of the minimum pulse width limit of the GTO thyristors.<br>In this PWM method, firstly, the switching sequences of voltage vectors which enable the neutral voltage balance control are selected.<br>And then, from these sequences of voltage vectors, sequences which are not affected by the minimum pulse width limit of GTO are selected.<br>Using these switching sequences, the voltage vector mean value control PWM method based on the space-vector control is proposed.

It is well known that the direct drive systems not to use the reduction gears with the clearane and backlash are required for the highly precise position control, whose motor must have high torque at very low speed. The authors have developed a new motor for this purpose and named PM vernier motor.<br>In this paper, it is explained at first what is PM vernier motor, the construction and principle, and then the theory able to calculate the torque and how to control its speed are described. It is also shown that the calculated values of torque were agreed well with the experimental results.

Recently, with the progress of robust control techniques, the resonance of mechanical systems becomes a more important problem. This paper presents a position control method to suppress the torsional vibration of a 2 mass resonant system. Here we propose a sensorless control of arm portion. In this case, it is necessary to estimate some states of the arm portion. When motor portion parameters are well known due to several identifications, the reaction torque caused by the shaft torsion can be estimated. This reaction torque feedback makes it possible to control the resonance frequency between the torque current and the motor position. Here, we introduce a new concept which is called "Resonance Ratio". The resonance ratio is determined arbitrarily by the feedback of the reaction torque. The proposed method is a reasonable concept from a mechanical point of view.<br>The proposed control system is based on both the conventional PD control and the resonance ratio control. Then any sensor information of the arm portion is not used, and the proposed controller is a very simple structure. This is one of the remarkable points of the proposed method. We discuss an idea of the determination method of controller gains. The validity of the proposed method is also proved by several experiments.

The two axis theory and the vector control based on this theory are well known. On the other hand, Yamamura proposed the phase segregation method (spiral vector method) for the analysis of induction motor, and suggested the field acceleration method (FAM). In this paper, the comparison of these analytical and control methods is investigated.At first, the equations from which the phase segregation will be derived are interpreted. In these equations, the information from 3-phase stator and rotor equations is involved. Secondly, it is clarified that the vector control system for constant rotor flux is a goal of T-I type FAM which is derived from a zero transient term condition. By using the T-I type transient equivalent circuit, the vector control system is easily obtained, because the circuit is the same as steady-state one when the amplitude of rotor flux is constant. The analytical solution of transient response for the vector control system is obtained for arbitrary initial conditions. Furthermore, the stability of T-II type FAM especially for the effect of stator resistance change is discussed by computing the torque transfer function. When the stator resistance is correctly estimated, the pole-zero cancellation occurs on the imaginary axis.

The single-phase converter or rectifier always has a voltage ripple in the output DC voltage, because the instantaneous power of the single-phase AC line varies on the double frequency of the line. In order to obtain a smooth DC voltage, an energy storing element is necessary. The smoothing capacitor is used to reduce the ripple voltage in the DC output. Usually, it has much larger capacitance than that needed to absorb the ripple energy.<br>This paper discusses the required capacitance to absorb the ripple energy, and represents a ripple compensation circuit with a small auxiliary capacitor controlled by a 2-quadrant chopper connected in parallel to the smoothing capacitor. The appended capacitor works under large ripple voltage and efficiently absorbs the ripple energy. The ripple compensation curcuit works as an equivalent capacitor which has a large capacitance.

This paper describes an induction heating system of 1kW 450kHz which is developed for dental casting machines. This system consists of a single-phase diode rectifier, a voltage-source inverter using four power MOSFET's, and a series resonant circuit with a matching transformer of turn ratio 8:1. No capacitor is connected on the DC side of the rectifier except for a high frequency capacitor of 0.47 μ F. Thus, the DC voltage across the high frequency capacitor is fluctuating at 100Hz, that is, twice as high as the line frequency of 50Hz as if no capacitor were connected. Not only does the fluctuation have no effect on heating or melting but also the fluctuation plays an essential role in shaping the line current of the rectifier into sinusoid and unity power factor, because it is seen from the DC side of the rectifier that the inverter plus the resonant circuit acts as a pure resistance.The power control covering a wide range from 50W to 1kW is achieved by power factor control of the inverter which takes the place of DC voltage control of the rectifier.The system efficiency is estimated to be 76% by sophisticated measurement of the actual heating power, which is based on Lissajous's figures for voltage and charge.

This paper deals with the speed-up effect of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control for vehicle applications. A photovoltaic panel is set on a car running on a city road and its static characteristics are recorded by the proposed high-speed measurement system. The effectiveness of MPPT controllers with various sampling frequencies is evaluated with the recorded data by simulation. In the car application, a higher sampling frequency achieves higher MPPT efficiency.

A suitable structure for small-capacity generator must be simple, robust, highly reliable and maintenance-free.The authors present an original brushless cylindrical-rotor type 4-pole three-phase synchronous generator without excitor. The stator is provided with a 4-pole three-phase main winding and a 2-pole single-phase exciting winding, and rotor field coils are connected with diodes, respectively, so as to make the same pole magnetic field as the stator main winding. The each field coil is consisted of a half-wave rectification circuit. The rotor field excitation is controlled proportionally by the stator dc exciting current.By the scheme that the stator main winding is connected to leading capacitors at the terminals for shunt excitation, and connected to the full-wave rectifier at the neutral point and the rectified current supplied to the stator exciting winding for series excitation, a brushless self-excited three-phase synchronous generator has been achieved.In this paper the circuit configuration of the generator and the experimental results using a 2kVA prototype machine are shown.

The application of the direct drive system is increasing in the field of robot and factory automation because of controllability with high accuracy. However, it requires the motor high torque at low speed.<br>Although the vernier motor, presented by C. H. Lee in 1963, could produce the reluctance torque in low speed, it involved many problems to be solved. In this paper, the authors have studied the reluctance torque of vernier motor using the finite element field analysis. As the increase of rotor slot number is effective to produce high torque, in our model there are not only winding slots but also small slots on the stator teeth surfaces and the rotor slots are provided in the periphery of the core more than the total number of stator slots by the pole number. The calculated torques have agreed very well with the experimental results.<br>A prominent feature of the control scheme is to control the armature current phase based on the detected rotor slot position, so there is no problem such as pull-in or pull-out in the vernier motor of C. H. Lee. And then the instantaneous torque is controlled by the amplitude of armature current. The experimental results on both the speed control and the position control were also shown in the paper.

Recent development in power electronics has made power semiconductor device larger and complicated, and device simulation is necessary to predict their characteristics. From the fundamental equations of semiconductor device, potential distribution and carrier concentrations can be solved using the finite element method. In this study, we make formulation for one dimensional analysis of a gate turn off thyristor (GTO) and simulate switching characteristics in order to know the effects of snubber circuit. In conclusion snubber condensor is necessary to suppress spike voltage, but increases the turn off loss of GTO.

The conventional semiconductor yield analysis is a hypothesis verification process, which heavily depends on engineers' knowledge. Data mining methodology, on the other hand, is a hypothesis discovery process that is free from this constraint. This paper proposes a data mining method for semiconductor yield analysis, which consists of the following two phases: discovering hypothetical failure causes by regression tree analysis and verifying the hypotheses by visualizing the measured data based on engineers' knowledge. It is shown, through experiment under the real environment, that the proposed method detects hypothetical failure causes, which were considered practically impossible to detect, and that yield improvement is achieved by taking preventive actions based on the detected failure causes.

This paper proposes a visual servo control method for exploring motion of eye-in-hand robot to recognize a three-dimensional object. Optimal motion is based on the strategy in which the position estimation precision of the feature points gets improved when the feature points move widely, and the optimal robot motion provides the widest transitions of the feature points per unit robot motion, so that the robot should be controlled to purse such motion. In addition, this paper describes the way to reduce a large number of calculation efforts. The validity of our approach is confirmed in the several experimental results.
