<p>The current Japan-US nuclear cooperation agreement, which is the result of strenuous diplomatic negotiations in the 1970s-80s, should best be extended beyond July 2018 as it stands now. However, in view of various unfavorable circumstances (such as the delayed operation of the Rokkasho-mura Reprocessing Plant, Monju, MOX programs), further determined efforts are needed on the Japanese side to improve the domestic climate by removing as much as possible the existing negative factors. Above all, Japan should endeavor to dissipate misgivings abroad about clandestine military diversions, somewhat provoked by Mr. Donald Trump's recent statements as well as Chinese accusations.</p>

<p>This work presents the position and force control in cartesian space by adapting the dynamics and geometry of the payload brought by a robot arm. We generated exciting trajectory by solving the nonlinear optimal problem to identify the dynamic parameters. Then we identified the dynamic model of the robot with the payload. Our proposed method can identify the geometric parameters of the payload from the identified dynamic parameters of the payload. Using the identified dynamic and geometric model, we generated the task motion for our robot to paint walls with roller by solving a new nonlinear optimal problem. Finally, we reconstructed the position and force control system from the model and generated motion, and let the robot performs the task motion in the experiment. As a result of using the accurate identified model, we can confirm that our proposed controller controls position and external force even if the painting roller brought by robot is changed.</p>

交通事故死者数の半減が日本の国家目標になっている。技術史上の大発明であるシートベルトと車体構造の進化により、交通事故による24時間以内死亡者数は減少しているが重傷者数は増加しており、交通弱者である子供(15歳以下)ならびに高齢者の死亡・重傷者合計数が増加している。死者・重傷者の半減に貢献するために、最適化設計されたシートベルトと故池田正彦氏が発明した衝撃緩衝装置を組み合わせて、乗員保護効果を極大化することを提案する。さらに、高齢者の認知・反応機能劣化に対応して、RFID装置を歩行者・自転車乗用者認識用のエージェント指向通信・放送システムとして適用することを提案する。

<p>Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd. (MHPS) was established by merging the thermal power generation business sectors of the two companies: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Hitachi, Ltd. (HITACHI). Both companies had separately pursued technologies for the effective and clean utilization of coal by employing their own firing systems. <p>The commercialization of biomass to liquid (BTL) technology requires not only development of stand-alone processes but also a total system solution. This R&D targets the development of an innovative biojet fuel production system. Entrained flow gasifier suitable for BTL and FT (Fischer-Tropsch) synthesis catalysts for biojet fuel with high selectivity and durability had been developed. Biojet fuel synthesis using bio-syngas had been carried out with combination of developed gasifier and FT synthesis catalysts.</p>

Legged robot is one of the ideal mechanisms for moving around muddy, irregular, and fragile surfaces. However, once it is turned over, it is not easy to recover, or is needed for special mechanisms, which cause the robot unnecessarily complex. To realize powerful yet simple legged machine that is able to self-recover from unexpected rolling, we developed a polyhedral shaped robot that has legs capable of performing tripod gait on every face. In this paper we show that this type of multi-faces tripod gait is realized by a simple gears and links mechanism driven by a single motor.

On JR Central's conventional lines, approximately 190km of track are replaced annually as one aspect of the company's line maintenance. The replacement work uses rails having a length of 25 meters, which are called standard-length rails, and those having a length of 200m or 150m, which are known as long welded rails. The standard-length rails are transported by rail from the Nagoya Port Materials Center and the long welded rails from the Hamamatsu Rail Center. Previously, this rail transport was carried out using three electric locomotives (EF64, EF58), one diesel locomotive (DD51), and 41 flat cars (open railroad freight cars). However, over 30 years have passed since these vehicles had been manufactured and alternatives were needed because these vehicles have become obsolete, so a railway diesel car type rail transport car was newly developed. This report will focus particularly on the newly developed bogie and the parts related to the new constant low speed function.

CVT chains have become widely used in vehicles because the slip between parts is very small, which enables efficient power transmission. However, the motion caused by the pins of the CVT chain entering and leaving the pulleys one after another during the power transmission process results in periodic motion of the whole chain. This behavior is known to affect noise and other basic performance aspects of CVTs. Therefore, it is important to study the geometrical specifications of the chain that affect periodic motion, such as the shape and dimensions of the parts. This study aimed to (1) identify the periodic motion that affects noise, and (2) formulate a motional theory to derive the ideal specifications of a CVT chain. First, after measuring the acceleration of the pulleys under conditions that generate large CVT noise, it was found that noise was greatly affected by periodic motion caused by the chordal action of the chain. Based on this result, a mathematical model was proposed to describe this chordal action. The pin profile curve was particularly considered in the model since it determines the motion of the chain at both ends of the chord part and has an important effect on the chordal action. Next, the chordal action of the chain was measured using an accelerometer, and the measured results were compared with the results calculated by the model. The results were consistent, which confirmed the validity of the model.

The lightweight racket with handle-light configuration and large head size is recent tendency of high-tech tennis rackets, increasing power or post-impact ball velocity with an increasing racket swing speed. This paper investigated the performance of lightweight balanced racket with super-large head size with 120 square inches in terms of feel or comfort. It predicted the effect of the mass and mass distribution of super-large head sized rackets on the impact shock vibrations of the racket handle and the player's wrist joint when a player hits a flat forehand drive. The prediction is based on the identification of the racket characteristics, the damping of the racket-arm system, equivalent mass of the player's arm system and the approximate nonlinear impact analysis in tennis. A lightweight balanced racket (mass: 292 g, the center of gravity LG: 363 mm from the butt end) and a conventional weight and weight balanced racket (349 g, LG: 323 mm) are selected as representatives. These two super-large head sized rackets made of carbon graphite have the same head size and same geometry. The result showed that the shock vibration of the lightweight balanced racket with super-large sized head is much larger than that of the conventional weight balanced type racket. It also showed that the sweet area of the former in terms of the shock vibration shifts from the center to the topside on the racket face compared to the latter. This is because the location of the grip on the racket handle is further from the location of the node on the handle of the first mode of lightweight balanced racket than that of the conventional weight balanced racket.

The behavior of an approximate solution of the steady boundary layer equations for two-dimensional incompressible flows is clarified. The moment equations are derived from boundary layer equations as an improvement of the Karman-Pohlhausen method. By means of these results, a simple procedure to construct the boundary layer flow field (including separation flow) with an arbitrarily given retarded outer flow is proposed.

The configuration of soccer balls has closely approached a perfect round shape by not only reducing a number of panels but also by eliminating roughness of the panel joints by thermal bonding process recently. Therefore, in a non-rotating or low-rotating moving shot, a soccer ball drops and curves by the change of wake flow, which is called a knuckle ball effect. It is said that the cause of the swerving ball on no rotating shoot of the soccer ball depends on the outbreak of the vortex occurred in the wake. However, it is not grasped the timing among the vortex outbreak and the swerving of balls. In this study, the velocity fluctuation of the ball wake was measured with hot wire probe and the oscillation of the ball was measured with three components load cell. And also the asymmetric configuration of the ball panel against moving direction was investigated as a factor to bring unexpected change of the ball orbit. The results show that the position change of the tail of vortex ring affects the swerving of the balls and that the low-rotating ball changes its face against the moving direction and it produces irregular lateral force.

The contact stiffness of joints has been evaluated experimentally and the method quantifying them has been proposed by authors. However it was found out that the range of application for this method was limited, since the method was based on the assumption that the relationship between force and real contact area of the joint is linear. Therefore, in this paper, we consider a widely applicable and more general identification method of the contact stiffness which can be applied to the joints in which the relationship between the force and the real contact area shows non-linear characteristics. As a consequence, following results are obtained. (1) The model of the joint interface with surface roughness can be made as a surface covered by springs with same length and spring constant along the profile of surface roughness. (2)The identification method of the contact stiffness of the joint based on the model can be applied to the joints, even if the relationship between the force and the real contact area of the joints is non-linear. (3) The contact stiffness per real contact area k shows constant regardless of the applied force in the joint where the relationship between the force and the real contact area is non-linear.

There has been no question that some strings do provide a better grip than others, but that did not guarantee that the ball will produce more spin. Furthermore, experiments with hand-held rackets has been needed to solve the vexed question of how players can tell the difference between different strings when laboratory tests indicate that they should play the same. The previous paper of the authors made clear the mechanism of top spin performance in actual tennis and its improvement by lubrication of notched nylon strings according to the high speed video analysis on the court for the first time. It succeeded in an experiment showing that as the main strings stretch and slide side ways more, the ball is given more spin due to restoring force parallel to the string face when the main strings spring back and the ball is released from the strings. Since the notches of strings decrease spin rate, the lubricant materials are effective to the notched strings. Furthermore, it showed that the more spin results in the reduction of shock vibrations of the wrist joint during impact. This paper showed that the ball is given less spin rate (40% decrease) with the notched used strings compared to that with the new strings in the case of the nylon in this experiment, which has remained to be seen which gives more spin between new strings and the lubricated used strings, and it showed that the ball is given more extra spin (30% increase) by oil lubrication at the string intersections compared to that with the notched used nylon strings. Furthermore, it also showed that the used natural gut with notches decrease 70% of spin rate compared to the new natural gut without notches in the another experiment, which has remained to be seen whether the same results will be obtained. It also showed the difference of the topspin behavior when a pro and an amateur hits a ball.
