『百人一首』に「暁」は一例(三〇番)しか詠まれていないが、勅撰集の詞書に戻すともう二例(三六・七一番)が浮上する。さらに「あさぼらけ」(三一・五二・六四番)・「よもすがら」(八五番)も対象となる。その他、「嘆きつつ」(五三番)・「やすらはで」(五九番)を含めて、「暁の時間帯」が内包している様々な問題点を分析してみた。その結果、暁の始まりは日付変更時点であることから、男女の「後朝の別れ」の時間帯と重なること、暁の前半は真っ暗だが、後半(あさぼらけ)は次第に明るくなっていること、だからといって「明く」を安易に夜が明けると解するのは危険であることを論じてみた。また暁の到来は視覚ではなく聴覚で察知したこと、視覚としては「有明の月」が象徴的に描かれていることも指摘した。百人一首はもちろんのこと、「暁の時間帯」の重要性はもっときちんと認識・把握されるべきである。

The Chinese character luan (亂) bears two contradictory meanings: “chaos” and “order.” Scholar and commentator Guo Pu (郭璞, 276-324) was the first to note the phenomenon of a single character possessing two diametrically opposed meanings. Over the centuries, theories about the phenomenon have proliferated, a debate which has given rise to the scholarly term fanxun (反訓, enantiosemy).Those who resist the concept of fanxun claim that these contradictory meanings are more recently accreted additions that result from the process of jiajie (仮借, phonetic borrowing) rather than meanings that inhere in the character from the start. Supporters of the idea of fanxun -- especially contemporary supporters -- attempt to parse the contradictory meanings as a dialectical conflict.In contrast to these viewpoints, the present paper advances two claims. The first is that, when taking into account the conventions of character creation and the history of character development, the phenomenon of a single character bearing two diametrically opposed meanings is the result of the phenomena of zhuanzhu (転注, derivative cognates) and jiajie (仮借, phonetic borrowing). That is, this paper asserts, even if one accepts the claim that the second, contradictory meaning was a later accretion through the process of jiajie, the conventions of character creation make the appearance of fanxun inevitable. Meanwhile, zhuanzhu and jiajie are conventions of character creation that work to increase the number of characters and the meanings that they bear, and both are based in the same sources of sound and meaning.From this foundation, the paper offers an additional formulation: “opposite meanings, intimately entwined (相反相因, xiangfan xiangyin).” That is, the paper asserts that a character that bears diametrically opposed meanings is not to be understood as a dialectic, but as “opposite meanings, intimately entwined” (i.e., contradictions which exist in intimate relation to each other) -- an understanding of the phenomenon that is characteristically Chinese.

This paper is a sequel to the thesis in ASPHODEL no.44. In The Female Quixote (1752), Glanville, heroine Arabella's fiance, is defined as a "lover-mentor." However he is always at the mercy of her and can not reform her failed moral vision. As a result, Arabella's cure is fulfilled not by Glanville, but by a learned Doctor who suddenly appears. Although the story has a happy ending, Glanville appears to be a nominal "lover-mentor" whose role as a fiance does not seem significant.The purpose of this paper is to find out Glanville's share in the story and define him as a key person essential to the novel. Most critics discuss Arabella's reform and marriage as disappointing and even tragic; it means the subordination in the patriarchal society. However it can be suggested that Glanville, who highly values and admires Arabella's intellect, is not a typical "lovermentor" only to make her reform. If we look at their marriage in a positive view, he is the ideal person for Arabella to marry. For, by his support, her future will be brighter and much more progressive than the women of the day. Furthermore, Glanville may be, in a sense, "a utopian husband," who Lennox hopes to have. Such a view may reflect her disappointing marriage as well as her dream of a "companionate marriage," which became familiar in the mideighteenth century.

The present study examined the factor structure of paranormal beliefs of female undergraduates. The Paranormal Beliefs Scale was developed by authors. We developed a new scale composed of seventy-six items by refining scale items used by previous studies. The Paranormal Beliefs Scale, the Big Five Scales (Wada, 1996), and the Trait Feelings of Unreality Scale (Sunaga, 1996) were administered to female undergraduates (N=392). By factor analysis (principal factor method with promax rotations), for the Paranormal Belief Scale, five factors were extracted : belief in augury, belief in unidentified objects, belief in good or bad luck, positive attitude toward science, and negative attitude toward science. According to a series of regression analyses (stepwise method), paranormal beliefs were significantly determined by big five and feelings of unreality. The significance of research in paranormal beliefs was discusssed from the point of view of youth and religion.

This study explores students’ preferences of class styles under the COVID-19 situation. It also examines whether an English course which utilizes the topic of a specialized field motivates students or not.Research questions of this study were two-fold: (1) How do the students whose majors are Japanese culture and literature feel about the English class which makes use of Japanese culture? (2) Which class style do students prefer, distance learning or face-to-face classes?The participants were 33 first-year university students who majored in Japanese culture and literature. They took distance learning classes including “flipped classroom”, meaning that students watched videos or materials outside class and discussed or worked on a project together with classmates via live-streaming classes in the spring semester; on the other hand, they had face-to-face classes in the fall semester.The result of the questionnaire showed that students felt the contents of the classes which treated Japanese culture were meaningful and fun for them. It was also clarified that studentspreferred face-to face classes over distance learning. This study implied that using materials which were related to their majors would motivate students and face-to-face classes acceleratecooperative learning. It is also suggested that teachers would be required to blend the advantages of distance learning and face-toface classes.

百人一首の初英訳は1865 年に、F. V. Dickins 氏によって作られた。Dickins 自身がその後、2 回も翻訳を試み、その他も数多くの英訳が作られ、その数はこれまで20訳以上に上っている。それらの英訳のほとんどに歌のローマ字翻字も記されており、17 番の在原業平の歌の翻字を調べてみたところ、歌の枕詞「ちはやぶる」が濁音で表記される翻字もあれば、清音で表記されるものもあった。日本においての享受史を調べてみたところ、以前「ちはやぶる」を清音で表記する時期もあった。例えば、明治・大正時代のものだと思われるかるたの札を見てみると、ほとんどが清音表記になっている。そこで本稿においては、「ちはやぶる」のローマ字翻字と、英語圏、また日本における享受について検討し、この枕詞を濁音ではなく、清音で表記するべきだと結論付けた。

仏典では死の状態を「木石のごとし」と言い、漢籍では「人、木石にあらず」と言う。仏典や漢籍では木石は非情のものの譬喩である。しかし、古来日本では木も石も人間と同じく情を持つ存在であるとする考え方がある。したがって、我が国に取り入れられた「木石、心を持たず」「人、木石にあらず」という句は、仏典や漢籍において持つ生そのものを否定したり、非情のものとして拒絶したりするような深刻さを持たず、修辞として利用される傾向にある。

For creators in musical theatre in the United States, William Shakespeareʼs plays have been a great source of inspiration. Early successes in Shakespeare musical adaption like The Boys from Syracuse (1938), Kiss Me, Kate (1948), and West Side Story (1957) are regarded astrue masterpieces in the history of musicals.The Shakespeare craze in U.S. musicals, however, really took hold from the late 1960s, when rock and other new popular genres of music began to change the scene of American musicals. Your Own Thing (1968) and Two Gentlemen of Verona (1971), both based on Shakespearean comedies, are now “rock musical” classics. In the new millennium, the musical world is having another surge of works inspired by Shakespeareʼs works, and the figure of Shakespeare as a playwright also appears in a variety of forms on the musical stage.This paper traces the history of American musicals related to Shakespeare and his works to show how various elements of Shakespearean plays and Shakespeare himself as a liberating figure in popular theatrical culture have been helping creators of musicals deal with the latestcultural and political issues in each new generation.

The present study explored the relationship between reading comic books and basic personality traits(Big Five ; Wada, 1996)in female undergraduates. The Experiences of Reading Comic Books Scale(developed by authors)and the Short Version for Big Five Scale(revised by authors)were administered to female undergraduates(N=331). According to the cluster analyses and the principal component analyses, three clusters were extracted as follows : fusion of underworld and actual world, love stories for girls and adult women, and detective and adventure stories. The correlation analyses indicated that conscientiousness inhibited reading comic books which depicted fusion of underworld and actual world. The psychological effects of reading comic books were discussed.

「朝顔」は奈良時代には特定の花の名ではなかった。現在の牽牛花を「朝顔」と呼ぶようになったのは平安時代からのことだとされるが、同じ頃に同じく蔓性草本で夕方に漏斗状の花を開くものが「夕顔」と呼ばれるようになるのは、「朝-夕」という語の対応が前提となっている。江戸時代には「昼顔」という名が現れるのも「朝-昼-夕」という語の体系がその前提としてあり、明治時代に新渡来種に「夜顔」の名が付けられたのも「昼-夜」という対語が基になっているのである。本稿はこれまで植物学的な類似によって注目されてきたこれらの名前を語の体系という観点から捉えてみたものである。それによって、夕顔と夜顔との混同の理由が理解されることになる。
