"Balilla" reminds us of the Opera Nazionale Balilla (ONB) of the Fascist regime. ONB was typically the totalitarian Fascist's way of educating the youth. This article focuses on the images of the ur-Balilla and the "Italianità" (being Italian) in Italy during and after WWI. Those two concepts have much to do with the process and the background of building up the Italian national consciousness. The analysis of the relationship between these two concepts and the Italian national consciousness is worthwhile in unraveling the structure and the formation of the Italian national consciousness.Probing into the columns of Luigi Bertelli (or Vamba, his nom du plume) in Il giornalino della domenica, some aspects could be clarified. Firstly, Balilla is integral to the "Italianità", and secondly, both of Balilla and the “Italianità” symbolize Risorgimento as well as Irredentismo. Those Vamba’s images appears to correspond to those of the Fascist regime. But in depth his images were different from those of the Fascist regime.Vamba takes it very seriously that children should be treated as independent human being. Therefore, citizenship education is quite essential for children and children have the right to commit themselves in politics. Underscoring the importance of Risorgimento and Irredentismo, Vamba seeks to build up the Italian national consciousness, which at that time was still precarious. But Vamba did not participate in the Italian Nationalist Association. The probabilities are that his way of thinking could not correspond to such associations as Opera Nazionale Balilla of Fascist regime.
