This paper proposes a new method for dynamic control of redundant manipulators via artificial potential field approach (APFA). The proposed method is based on the APFA with a combination of a time scale transformation and a time base generator which works as a time scale compressor. The dynamic behavior of the manipulator can be controlled by using the proposed method without any change of the form of the designed controller itself. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by computer simulations for redundant manipulators.

We have focuced to the model based matching technique to detect and locate casting parts in the image. To accomplish this, we have explored the edge based optimized feature extraction procedure and feature based model matching technique for object recognition, so that we have realized a practical visual positioning system for castings. Our system is insensitive to changes in lightings or backgrounds in the real works. In this paper, the system, experiments and some applications are described.

Single-phase boost rectifier with a resonant snubber switch cell is studied. The resonant snubber switch cell consists of an only active power switching device and a LC resonant circuit, and can also provide the necessary control over the current. To turn on and off an active power device under the soft switching conditions, the rectifier is operated in the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). The experimental results under the charge control confirm that the input current can nearly be wave-shaped sinusoidally with a near-unity power factor.

This paper reports part of a novel packaging method for a capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) based ultrasonic endoscope using low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) side via architecture. An annular ring array CMUT device is designed and fabricated for packaging. LTCC is used as a prime wafer for CMUT fabrication and LTCC side via structure is achieved by hexagonal shape dicing of the fabricated CMUT device. A hexagonal shaped polyimide substrate mounted at the backside of the CMUT is used as a base layer for IC integration (flip-chip bonding) and also provides mechanical support to the CMUT. Cr/Au electrodes were patterned on the LTCC side via and polyimide substrate to achieve electrical connection between CMUT arrays and IC circuits. Au bonding pads were successfully completed on the polyimide substrate by electroplating for flip-chip bonding. Flip-chip mounting on the polyimide substrate is described and the electrical resistance of bumps is measured using the 4-probe method. The difference between the measured and calculated resistance is discussed. This method with the indirect connection of CMUT arrays and IC circuits has flexibility for high performance tube-shaped CMUT packaging with small diameters for intravascular imaging.

This paper presents a computer aided system for making the train timetable, DIAPLAN-II (Train Diagram Planning Support System). It is designed to prepare the timetable of complicated lines including junctions and sections with different number of tracks such as single, double and four. We have already developed the DIAPLAN for double-track lines. It has employed the integrated framework of simulation and scheduling to emulate human experts' scheduling process on a computer, and it has been successfully applied to the co-operative work between man and computer in the timetable planning. Based on this experience, we employ the same framework to develop our new system. In this system, we define some additional functions to adjust the arrival and departure order of trains at a station in our framework, because it is the critical point for making the timetable of those complicated lines. A timetable generated by DIAPLAN-II shows its usefulness in the co-operative timetable planning.

The previous generator excitation control system is based on AVR control of generator terminal voltage. This system can't accommodate reactive power up to the facility limit even when the power system voltage decreases to the limit for stable operation. We attempted to develop advanced excitation control system (PSVR) to achieve higher constant sending end voltage of power station. We intended to apply the system to the generator connected to a 500kV system which contributes most effectively to the voltage stability of a bulk power transmission system. This PSVR produces higher control gains than the AVR, the following functions were adopted: (1) AVR gain reduction circuit, (2) phase compensation circuit, and (3) damping improvement by enlarging the limiter of the PSS. In addition, various functions were provided. These include voltage slope characteristics to balance the reactive power of adjacent generators and PSVR output and terminal voltage limiter to stabilize the generator operation. Previously to an application to a real system, a transient response test was performed by combining PSVR and generator simulator to verify the damping improvement and stability of the voltage control.

In this paper, a novel method to reduce harmonics involved in ac line currents of a diode rectifier circuit with a smoothing capacitor inside the dc output is proposed. This circuit consists of passive rectifier devices only. It is applied to the conventional double connected diode rectifier, 12-phase rectifier, and is added an auxiliary circuit which is composed of an interphase transformer with a secondary winding and a single-phase diode rectifier. Input voltage waveforms of the proposed circuit are quasi 24-step voltages which correspond to those of the conventional 24-phase rectifier.In this paper, circuit performances of the proposed method are discussed by analyzing the input voltage waveforms. Then, effects on harmonic reductions can be clarified by theoretical and experimental results, and ratings of system components are investigated.

Since the shape of color gamut differs for each color reproduction device, it is necessary to transform the colors in order to fit them into the reproducible colors, called Gamut Mapping. However, there have been no practical method for gamut mapping so far because it is difficult to describe the shape of gamut effectively. In this paper, we propose a method of extraction and mapping of destination color gamut based on mutual color space conversion between device-dependent and -independent color spaces performed by two multilayered neural networks. Furthermore, we propose a novel method for gamut mapping which adjusts compression ratio adaptively to the shape of gamut.

Recently the wind power generation has attracted special interest and many wind power stations are being in service in world. In the wind power stations, induction machines are mostly used as a generator. Since induction machines also have a stabi problem like the transient stability of synchronous machines, it is important to analyze the transient stability of power system includ wind power stations. This paper presents a model of induction generators, develops methods of power flow calculation and transi stability simulation of power system including induction generators, and presents considerations on the characteristics of transi stability of induction generators on the basis of numerical simulations.

Although general-purpose inverters have been used for variable speeds driving of AC motors, these are only for induction motor (IM) driving. Synchronous motor (SM) with permanent magnets has many advantages compared with IM; Small size, high efficiency, driving only synchronous frequency, and so on. In this paper, “general-purpose inverter for SM driving” is discussed. Following characteristics are required for the achievement of this inverter; (1) Stable driving without position sensor. (2) Performance characteristics equal to DC motor driving. (3) Robust control system with the estimating functions of motor parameters.This paper describes practical methods that attain the above characteristics by controlling primary flux of SM. In addition, it is shown that the estimating functions of motor parameters and the inverter circuits generating voltages equal to reference are indispensable to achieve high performance over all working regions.

For sufficient transportation capacity and passengers comfort and convenience, it is very important to design the suitable lift systems (e. g., the appropriate number of cages, velocity, capacity etc.) using a model which describes real elevator movements.The procedure used in conventional design calculations for office buildings is to determine the transportation capacity for the up-peak traffic situation using a, simple passengers arrival model.This paper presents a new design calculations using balanced traffic model, which can deal with the elevetor movements considering passengers arrival rate. As some performance indexes to evaluate the quality of service can be calculated by using this model, lift system designers can determine the appropriate lift facilities as to satisfy their goals. The validity of the propsed model is also shown by comparing with the measured data in real lift systems.

A reduction in the power consumed by motors is required for energy saving in the case of electrical appliances and electric vehicles (EV). The motors used for operating these apparatus operate at variable speeds. Further, the motors operate with small load in stationary mode and with large load in start-up mode. A permanent magnet motor can operate at the rated power with a high efficiency. However, the efficiency is lower at small load or high speed because the large constant magnetic force results in substantial core loss. Furthermore, the flux-weakening current that depresses voltage at high speed leads to significant copper loss. Therefore, we have developed a new technique for controlling the magnetic force of permanent magnet on the basis of the load or speed of the motor. In this paper, we propose the novel motor that can vary magnetic flux and we clarify the principle.

The authors started studying and developing a new capacitor used for a 1.5 MHz highly-stable LC tuning circuit in 1963. The high-stability of capacitor was severely required under the conditions that the signal voltage is from 1.4 to 9.2 V, the temperature is from -30 to 65°C and the period is for 20 years. The aging characteristics of the ceramic capacitors available 20 years ago were ΔC/C=±0.1%/year or so, but the requirements was ΔC/C=(-0.01±0.08)%/20 years. In addition, no design method to satisfy the requirements was established.Therefore, the authors developed a ceramic capacitor housed in a low-humidity metallic case using a paraelectric (MgTiO3) element, considering the stability of aging characteristics for 20 years.It could be assumed during the study that the aging characteristics would change almost linearly with the logarithm of time under the influence of humidity. So, the authors proposed the characteristics change for 20 years could be expected based on the data for 10 days of the specimen. To confirm that the proposal was correct, they measured the aging characteristics for 20 years, and found that the measurement value was within the specified value of ΔC/C which was (-0.01±0.08) %/20 years.

In this paper, we propose a new effective method for improving waveforms of output voltages in a double connected voltage source inverter. This method is based on applying two different input DC voltages which change to two levels periodically and differ each other from half cycle in phase, as DC power supplies into the inverter apparatus. The operations of two 6-phase bridge inverter circuits and the configurations of two output transformers, connected delta-delta and delta-star, are exactly the same as the conventional 12-step inverter.First is this paper, the principle of the proposed method is described, and the optimum input voltage waveforms are decided theoretically by minimizing the total harmonic distortion factor of the output voltages in this inverter apparatus. Then we suggest that the calculated input voltages with two levels can be realized by dividing those into two DC voltage supplies whose voltage ratio is 2:1 and adding four bi-directional switching elements. Also, the capacities of the DC input sources and the output transformers are calculated.As a result, we can make clear that although the construction of the proposed inverter is very simple, the output voltage waveshapes of the inverter are almost the same as those of the 24-step inverter. The experimental discussions are also given.Moreover, a voltage control method for applying it to uninterruptible power supply is discussed. In addition, it is shown that the waveforms of output voltage in the inverter apparatus are improved, similar to the conventional 36-step or 48-step inverter when the DC voltage source is divided into 3 or 4 supply parts.
