Reverse conducting thyristors are analyzed using a two-dimensional simulator to investigate the effects of substrate types, P-type or N-type, on transient characteristics. The ramp currents with four kinds of rise-time are applied to the thyristors. The thyristor with a P-type substrate shows faster turn-on time and lower clamping-voltage change than that of an N-substrate for the applied ramp currents. The excellent transient response to the P-type substrate thyristor is caused by the accelerated carrier, which results from the high electric field appearing in the P-base region.

We must switch from trucking to trains or ships for freight transportation in view of aggravating environ-ment destruction, depletion of fossil energy resources, and shortage of young manpower.High power electric locomotives have been developed and are contributing an increased freight transporting capacity. But we have to restrict their power output because of voltage drop and shortage of capacity on account of long interval of traction substations. We have studied an adaptive output power control system of them to exploit their full ability with computer simulation. We propose a new method of calculating the difference between the voltage of contact wire of locomotives and its limit, and the resistance of feeding system with the position of the locomotive and traction substation, and calculating the current to be increased within the limit. Otherwise we propose to reduce output power of locomotives according to the difference between voltage of contact wire and its limit. We show that high power locomotives can be worked within the voltage limit and the standard train running time can be maintained by computer simulation proposed in the above. Thus we can introduce the high power locomotives without any large investment to expand the existing substation and can work them to the limit of their capacity.

Polyamic acid thin film was electrodeposited on metal foil using the solution containing triethyl-ammonium salt of polyamic acid dissolved in mixed solvent of DMF and methanol. The polyamic acid thin film was continuously imidized to form polyimide dielectric thin film, on which polypyrrole was polymerized as another electrode. Characteristics of this polyimide thin film as a dielectric is similar to that of polyimide film formed by spin coating technique. Applying this method to etched aluminium foil, small size film capacitor which has large capacitance and excellent characteristics was proposed.

X-ray radiation: bremsstrahlung and characteristic X-ray, in electron beam bombarded X-ray source is numerically analyzed with the Monte Carlo technique. In order to calculate the radiation, scattering processes such as bremsstrahlung, plasmon scattering, elastic collision, inner shell ionization, and secondary electron emmission are taken into account.The calculated relation between X-ray intensity and electron energy agrees with the experimental results reported by other groups. The intensity of bremsstrahlung has strong dependence on the angle because of absorption. The thickness of a foil target in which the X-ray intensity is maximized is smaller than electron mean range. Back scattered X-ray intensity in conventional X-ray tubes varies as the target angle. The peak of X-ray intensity angular dependence is obtained when the angle is 20°-40°.

Parallel beam structure has many significant features, as follows. (i) The tip moves in parallel at the end. (ii)This structure converts the small displacement into the large strain. (iii) Each unit doesn't interfere to the other units by piling up this structures. We used this structure for piezoelectric vibrating gyroscope (angular rate sensor). In this paper, we analyzed features of the parallel beam structure by Finite Element Method, and showed that the resonance frequency of the drive unit and the sensor unit can be easily adjusted by changing the mass at the tip. From this result, this structure suits for the gyroscope. Experimental results are shown.

The taste of beer was measured using a taste sensing system with eight kinds of lipid membrane. The output from the sensor has high discriminating power and high correlation with taste substances in beer and sensory test by human. The estimation of the concentration of taste substances by multiple regression analysis was fairly well. The taste sensor also well estimated the result of sensory test of many keywords concerning beer taste.

Analog Indicating Electrical Instruments were developed in the last half of the nineteenth century. Having searched for the source of precision readings in the measuring such as astrolabes, Tyco's quadrant or surveyng instruments which employed nonious scales, diagonal scales and micrometer driven scales in Europe, the US and Japan from the fourteenth century, the author found that Edward Weston in the US employed diagonal scales for the precision electrical meters.Through the reproduction of old hand-drawing method of Electrical Instruments Scales which have diagonal graduations, he concluded that the diagonal scales were the most appropriate measure for precision analog electrical meters.

An LLC series resonant converter presents a viable opportunity for the realization of a DC solid-state transformer. As the DC-based power system increasingly garners the attention of academia and industry, the need for reliable, economical and efficient voltage transformation with galvanic isolation has emerged. The integrated gate-commutated thyristor (IGCT) is an attractive switch for such implementation because of its advantages over the insulated gate bipolar transistor, namely the lowest conduction losses in the class. This work shows that the IGCT can be easily implemented as a switching element in a resonant converter without the need for the protective clamping circuit. Resonant switching operation is demonstrated and supported by experimental data, and high efficiency is confirmed at high switching frequencies.

This paper proposes a normalization design for series inductances in a triple active bridge (TAB) converter. The voltage variations and inductances are normalized based on percentage, and the complicated relationships between the elements of the TAB converter are clarified. The limitation of inductances corresponding to the different voltage variations is specified. The inductances are designed by considering the operation range of the phase shift angles. Based on this, the proposed method allows the inductances in TAB converter to be designed for various applications. A prototype converter rated at 200V and 500W is implemented to verify the proposed method. The experimental results show that the converter can operate under the rated power, indicating that the proposed method can be applied for designing of a TAB converter.

A new current control method based on the internal model principle in control theory is proposed. It uses a sinusoidal internal model, but it does not use any coordinate transformations. The method can be used for tracking an arbitrary number of harmonics, a DC component or a fundamental frequency component signal. It is applied to a single-phase PWM inverter and an active filter. Simulation and experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed method.

Induction motor drive with PWM inverter control, which can reduce the weight of the driving devices, is used for Shinkansen trains in order to achieve high speed transportation.This paper describes the experimental results for controlling wheel slip and re-adhesion at high speed running with the type 953 Shinkansen test train. The induction motor for each axle of this train is individually controlled by an independent PWM inverter. By introducing the vector control for the induction motor drive system, quick response for the motor torque can be achieved when wheels are going to slip. The control scheme for the wheel slip and re-adhesion is that the motor torque is gradually reduced by increasing of wheel slip speed.The results show, it is possible to recover to adhesive condition against wheel slip, without excessive motor torque reduction, when the reducing torque value and control time constant are properly selected.By these tests, re-adhesion characteristics improvement by induction motor vector control are obtained. To the next step, the parallel motor control system with a vector controlled inverter will be investigated.

In this paper, we propose a heterogeneous hidden layer consisting of both sigmoid functions and RBFs (Radial Basis Functions) in multi-layered neural networks and present a method for implementing the neural network to control systems. Focusing on the orthogonal relationship between the sigmoid function and its derivative, a derived RBF that is a derivative of the sigmoid function is used as the RBF in the neural network, so the proposed neural network is called an ONN (Orthogonal Neural Network) and the function mapping with the ONN can be treated as a kind of an orthogonal function series model. Identification results using a nonlinear function confirm both the ONN's feasibility and characteristics by comparing with those obtained using a conventional neural network which has sigmoid function or RBF in hidden layer. Using the ONN, a parallel type neural controller, which uses both the ONN output and the conventional control output as an objective system control input, is proposed. Simulation results for discrete-time nonlinear SISO system demonstrate the applicability of the neural controller for controlling nonlinear systems and experimental results for controlling angular velocity of a DC servo motor demonstrate its usefulness for controlling practical systems.

DC corona discharge in gaseous helium under non-uniform electric fields down to 4.2K at atmospheric pressure has been investigated. Although helium is a non-electro negative gas, a negative pulse corona is observed only near the normal boiling point and then negative breakdown voltage increases remarkably. Positive ion space charge modifies the electric field distribution in the gap space considerably. Criteria for corona inception and positive breakdown preceded by corona are proposed, and their availability is confirmed experimentally. The electric field strength, corona current density and space charge density are measured successfully and are analyzed theoretically using a bias probe method and a numerical field calculation technique. Apparent mobilities of charge carriers generated by positive and negative corona discharge are obtained with these discharge parameters. As a result, it is suggested that major ion species in positive corona is He+, and that an electronic bubble plays an important role in the negative pulse corona development near the normal boiling Point.

It is an important factor for railway services to take proper train rescheduling under disrupted conditions. This paper discusses the rescheduling problem in the case of resumption of train operation, in which the train operation has been temporarily suspended by an accident. The authors propose a novel rescheduling method using selective stops schedule pattern. The proposed rescheduling problem has been formulated as a nonlinear optimization problem, and it has been solved by the simulated annealing method. Finally, the proposed methods are applied to a typical commuter line, and the efficiency of these methods has been verified through simulations.

The audible noise which is produced by corona discharge from transmission line conductors is composed of two major components, namely “hum noise” and “random noise”. Hum noise has a frequency of twice the power line frequency and is generated primarily in rain, fog, and highly humid environments. It is one of the major factors affecting conductor design of transmission lines for voltages above 500kV and it is very important to predict level of hum noise near transmission lines. In this paper, through comparison between measured values in the UHV Akagi test line and that using corona cage, an experimental prediction method of hum noise in rain condition is proposed.
