The direct ac/ac converters have been investigated in the last two decades because they had no dc-link component for large energy storage. In, Japan, 10kVA-40kVA matrix converters were developed in 2005. The direct ac/ac converters are classified into two main categories, namely, the matrix converters and the direct ac/ac converters with dc Link. And various control strategies for them have already been proposed. This paper discusses and summarizes main circuits, control strategies, overvoltage protection, and ride-through capability of the direct ac/ac converters.

In this paper, we monitored the electromagnetic waves generated by human activity. We investigated a monitoring system that used the bioelectric potential of a plant. Four subjects walked on the spot at a distance of 60 cm from a rubber tree and we measured the variation in the bioelectric potential of the tree produced by the stepping motion. The results confirmed that the electromagnetic waves generated by a person walking on the spot produced a measurable response in the bioelectric potential of a plant. It was also found that this variation in the bioelectric potential varied in synchrony with the subject's walking pace.

Recent rapid progress in nanotechnology has focused research and development efforts on new high performance materials. Organic-inorganic hybrid materials such as nylon-layered silicate nanocomposites have attracted special interest and various studies continue to be conducted on thermoplastic resins.<br>In this study, we found out the best organic modifier of layered silicate that contributed to an affinity for epoxy resin (thermosetting resin), and succeeded in creating an intercalated-type epoxy-layered silicate nanocomposite. This nanocomposite realized some improvements by the addition of 5 or 6 weight percentage of organically modified layered silicates, which have 20<sup>o</sup>C higher thermal resistance, 60% higher fracture toughness, 19% higher flexural strength and 10% higher insulation breakdown strength than these of an epoxy resin without layered silicate fillers. An electrical treeing growth was observed in the nanocomposite. The electrical treeing progress with many branches in the nanocomposite seemed to result in an increase in the insulation breakdown strength. These results suggest the possibility of practical use as an insulating material in heavy apparatuses.

Recently trains raise speed and reduce the motor vehicle ratio. It is needed, therefore, to utilize adhesion force more effectively. Although several. anti-slip readhesion control methods have been developed, it has become clear that slip and readhesion repeat under strict adhesion conditions as far as they rely on the conventional concept of readhesion control. So we thought about the reason why conventional anti-slip control methods cause slip/readhesion reiteration under strict adhesion condition and have developed a new control method "Anti-slip Readhesion Control Method with Presumed Adhesion Force". We confirmed in running tests that we can prevent slip/readhesion reiteration and stably control motor currents even under strict or rapidly changing adhesion conditions by using the newly developed control method.

Object-oriented technology is used for the software of the large range, and its application fields are increasing. Object-oriented technology is also accepted naturally in the field of Internet application. Consequently, developments of new kinds of object-oriented technologies have been performed. Agent technology has been developed based on an object-oriented concept, and may have a great evolution with applying to applications of Internet field. In this paper, authors introduce the latest trend and the example of application of such object-oriented technology and agent technology.

Non-destructive, two-dimensional distribution measurement of rusting under opaque anticorrosion paint was carried out, using a terahertz camera, a quantum cascade laser, and a galvanic scanner. The measurement speed of the present method was found to be 11 times faster than the conventional raster scanning method based on time-domain spectroscopy. A signal to noise ratio exceeding 10<sup>2</sup> was confirmed for both systems, which enables detection of minor rusting.

This paper proposes novel techniques for the improvement of the convergence characteristic of step-by-step time integrations in nonlinear transient eddy-current analyses. The proposed methods, which are based on the time-periodic finite-element method and the explicit error correction method, can extract poorly-converged error components corresponding to large time constants of an analyzed system. The correction of the extracted error components accelerates the convergence of transient calculation efficiently. Furthermore, we extend the performance of the proposed methods in nonlinear problems. Some numerical results that verify the effectiveness of the proposed methods are also presented.

In many engineering fields, distance to target is very important and fundamental information. Acoustical signal often plays an essential role in measurement of distance. Though there are distance measurement methods using a time delay between transmitted and reflected waves, it is difficult to measure short distance because the reflected waves are often buried in the transmitted wave for short distance. Recently, a method for measuring the short distance has been proposed using standing wave. We applied the fundamental principle of this method to the estimation of short distance using audible sound as a transmitted wave. This method enabled us to obtain range spectrum from power spectrum of composite sound, but it required Fourier Transfom twice. This paper introduces the chirp signal, which is a signal such that the frequency changes with lapse of time, as a transmitted wave, and an interference arises due to the superposition of transmitted and reflected waves. Since the period of power fluctuation for the composite sound is inversely proportional to the distance between microphone and target, we propose a new distance estimation method by using chirp signal as a transmitted wave. Finally, we also confirm the validity of the proposed method through computer simulation and by experiment in an actual sound field.

When a robot manipulator performs fast motion control, high joint torque is required. Moreover, additional joint torque is necessary to suppress disturbance. However, as an actuator can not produce very high joint torque, the saturation on joint torque occurs. This paper proposes a strategy to solve the saturation problem stated above. The two algorithms called the torque limiting algorithm and the reference adjusting algorithm are introduced. The torque limiting algorithm is applied in order to prevent the saturation of joint torque. Another algorithm called the path reference adjusting algorithm will suppress the deviation on path tracking caused by the limitation. The effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed by experimental results of a 2-link planar arm manipulator.

Disuse atrophy of various organs related to swallowing functions is one of the causes of swallowing disorders. In the present study, a system to measure swallowing frequency in a nonrestrictive manner over a long period of time was developed. In the present method, a throat microphone is attached to the neck region to record oral sounds. The reliability of the method is confirmed by recognizing 86% of swallowing sounds. Since the interval of swallowing in a complete rest is getting longer according to aging, the swallowing function is possibly getting weaker.

The superconducting magnetically levitated vehicle has guidance coils that produce vehicle guidance forces according to a null flux principle. However, the expected forces dont have significant damping forces to suppress a lateral vibration of the vehicle. Even though the experimental system has some magnitude of damping, it is still small. Moreover, since the guidance forces are very weak at low speeds, the minimum levitating speed is limited. The paper proposes a guidance method using LSM armature coil currents. When the currents are decomposed into dq frame variables so that the d-axis is assigned to the filed axis, the d-axis component of currents generates the lateral forces. The lateral forces of the vehicle are formulated, and the guidance force coefficient is defined. And the author shows the design formula of the guidance regulator system that employs a dynamic compensator using a feedback signal of lateral displacement. The calculated results show that the guidance regulator system works very well as we specify.

To improve the quality of products in a steel making process, the realization of a non-contacting conveyance of a steel plate has been expected. To make the total system simple, we proposed a combined lift and propulsion system by transverse flux linear induction motors. By feeding the DC biased AC to the transverse flux linear induction motor, it is possible to realize an efficient combined lift and propulsion system with a simple structure. After showing the peculiarities of the system, conveyance experiments of a steel plate are carried out. In these experiments, the equivalent mass estimation method in which the levitation mass is estimated from the gap error is applied and the effect of the method is also shown.

Permanent magnet synchronous (PM) motors are widely used for industrial applications. In traction and spindle drives, the constant power operation and wide speed range are desirable. With DC motor drives, these are achieved by the appropriate reduction of the field current as the speed increases. In the PM motor, the direct control of magnet flux is not available. The air-gap flux, however, can be weakened by the direct axis armature reaction. This control technique is called "flux-weakening" instead of "field-weakening". This paper describes a variable speed drive system of PM motor for the constant power and wide speed range operations. In the proposed control system, a novel flux-weakening technique is applied. The current vector is controlled so that the maximum torque per armature current can be obtained at low speeds and the terminal voltage is kept within its limited value at high speeds. The control performances are examined by the simulations and the experimental results.

Agricultural and food processing applications of pulsed power and plasma technologies are described in this paper. Repetitively operated compact pulsed power generators with a moderate peak power are developed for the agricultural and the food processing applications. These applications are mainly based on biological effects and can be categorized as germination control of plants such as <i>Basidiomycota</i> and <i>arabidopsis</i>; inactivation of bacteria in soil and liquid medium of hydroponics; extraction of juice from fruits and vegetables; decontamination of air and liquid, etc. Types of pulsed power that have biological effects are caused with gas discharges, water discharges, and electromagnetic fields. The discharges yield free radicals, UV radiation, intense electric field, and shock waves. Biologically based applications of pulsed power and plasma are performed by selecting the type that gives the target objects the adequate result from among these agents or byproducts. For instance, intense electric fields form pores on the cell membrane, which is called electroporation, or influence the nuclei. This paper mainly describes the application of the pulsed power for the germination control of <i>Basidiomycota</i> i.e. mushroom, inactivation of fungi in the soil and the liquid medium in hydroponics, and extraction of polyphenol from skins of grape.

We developed a multifunctional vacuum interrupter that has three functions: current interruption, disconnection, and earth operation in a vacuum vessel. Using the multifunctional vacuum interrupter, we realized 24 kV, 630 A, 25 kA rated switchgear that do not use SF<SUB>6</SUB> gas. In addition, we could downsize the switchgear greatly compared with conventional switchgear by applying excellent vacuum insulation characteristics. In this paper, we report the backgrounds and the solutions of the following technical problems regarding vacuum insulation inside the multifunctional vacuum interrupter: (1) Improvement of breakdown voltage between the vacuum vessel and high voltage flexible conductors, (2) optimization on the shape of shielding electrodes set at both ends of an insulating rod, (3) removal of conductive micro particles and improvement of breakdown voltage between contacts by using AC working voltage, and (4) identification of long-term reliability of vacuum insulation under the continuous application of AC working voltage.

This paper describes the development of a driver assistance system for improving passenger ride comfort of automobiles. Based on results of psychophysical experiments of subjective ride comfort evaluation, a linear multiple regression model that evaluates the ride discomfort index (RDI) is proposed using longitudinal acceleration and jerk of the automobile as explanatory variables. In order to reduce the ride discomfort caused by the velocity fluctuation of an automobile, a microcomputer-based driver assistance system that evaluates the RDI and informs the driver of the RDI in real time by both visual and auditory means is developed. Experiments show that, with the help of the system, a driver can improve his/her driving skills and modify his/her driving behavior to provide passenger-friendly maneuvers and improve passenger ride comfort, thus verify the usefulness of the proposed driver assistance system.

TCP, a current de facto standard transport-layer protocol of the Internet, cannot fully utilize the available bandwidth. Fairness between TCP flows is another important measure of TCP performance. We proposed a method for predicting the optimal size of the congestion window to avoid network congestion by using a machine learning approach. In this paper, based on the machine learning approach, we further improve the congestion algorithm with respect to utilization of the available bandwidth and fairness between TCP flows. The improvement includes bringing a size of the congestion windows closer to the optimum value, realizing fairness against congestion algorithms that aggressively use bandwidth, and adapting to the network where the available bandwidth abruptly changes. The proposed method is evaluated with respect to utilization of bandwidth and fairness between TCP flows including flows aggressively using bandwidth by simulation using NS-2.

Plant can recognize the environmental factors, for example temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure and light intensity. Humans can identify the capabilities by measuring the plant bioelectrical potential. It can also recognize the breezing wind. Plants can be regarded as an environmental sensor by using the potential. In this study, the bioelectrical potential characteristic to the wind grade was examined. As for the results, the correlation between the characteristic and the grade was derived. The correlation coefficient was very high. The integrated value for the potential was adopted to derive the relation. Plant can identify the wind intensity by adopting the value. It became obvious that plant has higher capabilities to sense the environmental factors not only temperature, humidity and light intensity but also wind intensity. The application field of plant will spread by using these results.
